Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 5 items Gibson, Bob , born in 1935, American baseball player, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher known for his competitive intensity. He was respected for his fastball, which helped him win 251 major league games over 17 seasons (1959-1975), all while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Born Robert Gibson in Omaha, Nebraska, he played both baseball and basketball for Creighton University. Gibson signed a contract with the Cardinals in 1957 and played in the minor leagues, where his raw pitching skills were refined. He toured briefly with the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team in the winter of 1958 before pursuing baseball exclusively. Gibson's best year was 1968 when he earned 22 victories, set the major league season record for lowest earned run average (1.12), and struck out what was then a league-record 268 batters. Gibson was named the National League's most valuable player (MVP) for 1968 and also earned the first of his two Cy Young Awards (1968, 1970), given to the outstanding pitcher in each league. Creative Perfumes Why do I have to be an example for your kid? You be an example for your own kid.
A great catch is like watching girls go by the last one you see is always the prettiest. It is not something I earned or acquired or bought. It is a gift. It is something that was given to me just like the color of my skin. When I was playing I never wished I was doing anything else. I think being a professional athlete is the finest thing a man can do. I guess I was never much in awe of anybody. I think you have to have that attitude if you're going to go far in this game.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.
I'm going to list the players on the top 2 Tiers from before, plus Murray and Carter (Total: 82). Please make a full list of 40 players you consider the greatest or most Hall worthy.

Bob Gibson, a 66-year old man gets cutoff by some younger nowhere man and chases the bugger 10 miles only to blacken both of the buggers' eyes and cut his face so bad it needed stitches.
This was a stud who you didn't dare take too much of home plate from or he dusted off the plate with you.
JohnnysGhost 02-20-2002, 06:36 PM great to see Gibson only needed 10 miles,im sure he could have gone at least 13. 1.12 ERA in 68.....all you need to know fans JohnnysGhost 02-20-2002, 06:41 PM Bye the way(the memory is failing me)Am i correct in remembering back-to-back no hitters in a Cardinal-Giants series in 1968?One by the Cards and the next night by the Giants?Or vice-versa? anybody remember 02-20-2002, 07:54 PM Juan Marichal would've taken a baseball bat to the punk! trosmok 02-21-2002, 09:11 AM
On Sept. 17, 1968 Gaylord Perry twirled a no-no, beating the Cards 1-0. The next night, Ray Washburn no-no-ed the Giants 2-0, and to my knowledge, this is the only consecutive no hitters by two clubs against each other in history. Haven't been able to find the box score to see who held the Giants to one run in the first game, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was, indeed Bob Gibson. While road rage is problem, I'm glad Mr. Gibson took care of business before it escalated to a "Do I feel lucky today? Well, do you punk?" situation.
