Kansas City, Mo. If you've been reading the spring notes in our update package, we've talked a lot about sleepers. But to make things simpler, here are some potentially undervalued players. We'll leave it to you to figure out where to put them, and be aware that the only thing these players have in common is that they'll go in some drafts for less than we think they're worth, and I don't at all mean to imply that Danny Haren is in the same class as Javier Vazquez:
Hitters:
Pitchers:
In our 10-team head-to-head league we keep three players. I am definitely keeping Alex Rodriguez and Miguel Tejada. For my third player I must choose between Manny Ramirez and Miguel Cabrera. I know Manny ranks higher on the cheat sheet, but I am thinking Cabrera at 22 is hard to let go.

(U-WIRE) CHICO, Calif. Decisions, decisions, decisions. What is a highly touted high school baseball player to do? Sign a professional contract and get paid to play the sport he loves? Or, accept a full ride scholarship and not get paid to play and also be expected to pass classes along with winning games? Most players' goals are to get to the major leagues. Those who have made it to the major leagues traveled roads as different as the personalities in a clubhouse. Some got to where they are today by accident. San Francisco Giants' pitcher Kirk Rueter had no intentions of one day pitching for the Montreal Expos and then the Giants, or going as far as having the second longest winning streak to begin a career in the majors with 10 wins. "I wanted to go to college for four years and then go out and get a job," the left-hander Rueter said.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game
If ever you were going to judge a book by the reaction to it, an excellent candidate would be Moneyball , reporter Michael Lewis’ terrific and brisk account of how a long-simmering and mostly amateur analytical revolution was finally acknowledged, embraced, and ruthlessly implemented by a Major League Baseball executive: Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane. It’s a tale of what happens when an energetic manager realizes that "the pursuit of truth [is], suddenly, the key to success," and that the possessors of this truth are outsiders shunned by the rigid hierarchy and insular mind-set that has dominated an industry for a century. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy the story and thrill to its non-sporting implications. Beane is the most visible and successful proponent of a new school of baseball thought and scientific analysis that for the last quarter century has been demonstrating, in voluminous detail and with caustic wit, that much of what you’ve always known about the national pastime is just plain bunk. Dependable "clutch hitters"? They basically don’t exist, study after "sabermetric" study has shown. ( Sabermetrics , a word coined by the discipline’s revered popularizer, Bill James, is derived from the Society for American Baseball Research.) Pitching and defense win championships, right? They don’t without good offense, James and others have shown. Are minor league and college statistics meaningless predictors of major league value, especially when compared to eyewitness observation? Actually, something much closer to the opposite is true.

    This Bud’s for you
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has taken a hard line on steroid use , proposing 50-game suspensions for first-time offenders and a “three strikes you’re out” lifetime ban. His public announcement of the plan accomplishes two things: 1) It buys baseball time with Congress, which is threatening to impose new steroid penalties. 2) It backs the players’ union into a public relations corner where even the suggestion of lessening the punishments will appear shifty. Should baseball implement Selig’s plan? Posted by Bergin at May 9, 2005 11:37 AM
Comments YES! It is about time for baseball to get serious about drugs and steroids. Posted by: Chappy at May 9, 2005 11:36 AM Yes, they should implement his plan. Without delay. Posted by: Laura at May 9, 2005 11:37 AM Maybe even better; ban government subsidies of pro sports teams and see whether people are willing to juice themselves for less than a million bucks per year. Posted by: Robert Perry at May 9, 2005 11:47 AM Yes, and so should other sports. I also agree with Robert on banning subsidies. Posted by: Peter L at May 9, 2005 11:51 AM

Buried at the end of Ross Newhan's latest Los Angeles Times column is the news that baseball's drug testing for minor leaguers, touted by Commissioner Selig as a proposed replacement for the current major league system, doesn't work:
"In the last week, I talked to five players at different camps, each of whom had spent the last two or more years at the minor league level. All said they have never been tested during the winter.
"'We're basically knocking on doors, hoping to find people home,' baseball labor lawyer Rob Manfred acknowledged of the winter program in the minors.
"'We're trying to do the best we can with it, but locating the players is one problem, and there are obviously significant legal issues involving players who live out of the country.'
"In other words, baseball officials armed with passports and specimen cups can't simply start tracking down players in Mexico, the Dominican Republic or any other foreign country, ignoring borders and the laws of those countries.
"If there is not off-season testing of all players on a random basis, if even U.S. players can't be found and tested during the off-season, what's the point?"

The Kansas City Royals were disappointed that none of their players were subpoenaed to testify as Congress investigates steroids in Major League Baseball.
"It's just another example of how small-market teams get the shaft," said Mike Sweeney, the oft-injured first baseman and designated hitter who may be the team's only star.
"My teammates and I are extremely disappointed and hurt that people like Sammy Sosa, Jason Giambi and Frank Thomas were asked to testify, and even former players like Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire," Sweeney said.
"I'm a big strong guy, just like they are," Sweeney explained. "I've had nagging neck, back and side injuries, like juicers sometimes do - but nobody ever accuses me of using steroids. It's a bummer."

The other day, I thought to myself, "I wonder which players have walked the most over the last few years?" There was absolutely no reason for me to think of that, nothing to prompt it whatsoever. NORM: Giambi link puts spotlight on gym
Grand jury transcript leaks say Jason Giambi testified he got a performance- enhancing steroid at Gold's Gym and turned his brother, Jeremy, on to the steroid.
Jason Giambi 's grand jury testimony has tossed a local Gold's Gym into the middle of baseball's steroids scandal. I stopped in on Saturday to see how much the controversy has affected the athletic club at 9310 S. Eastern Ave. Media calls have been pouring in, and reporters have been showing up, said a manager who identified himself as Pete "It kind of sucks," said Pete, who referred all questions to a regional supervisor, who could not be reached Saturday. According to grand jury transcripts leaked last week to the San Francisco Chronicle, Giambi admitted obtaining a performance-enhancing steroid from the club, and also turning his brother, Jeremy Giambi , on to steroids.

Report: Giambi says he used steroids THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Jason Giambi's reported testimony that he used steroids might jeopardize his $120 million contract with the New York Yankees and allow baseball commissioner Bud Selig to discipline him. Giambi said he injected himself with human growth hormone in 2003 and used steroids for at least three seasons, according to a grand jury transcript reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle. His testimony last December, before a federal grand jury investigating illegal steroid distribution, contradicts his public proclamations that he never used performance-enhancing drugs. Penalties for steroid use in baseball began in 2003, but testing that identified players didn't start until the next season. Human growth hormone, or hGH, is not specifically banned by the major leagues. While discipline is spelled out for positive tests and criminal convictions, admission of steroid use is not addressed, possibly giving Selig an opening to punish Giambi. Even so, baseball can't test him more than other players because it's been over a year since the steroid use.
