O ne might expect me to enjoy a bit of schadenfreude in the wake of the steroid scandal surrounding New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi, among others, as I've relayed to anyone within earshot for a couple of years his proclivity for knifing his former team’s fans in the back. But far from taking pleasure in his dishonor, I'm sharing the lament one poster to baseballprimer.com succinctly summarized: "ESPN is going to be unwatchable." Previous Columns All this "God talk"

Click here to access the archives The steroid revelations surrounding Giambi, his brother Jeremy, and Barry Bonds comprise the biggest victory in years for a major sports media that has in some ways suffered the same credibility hits as the primary networksnamely, fans are increasingly choosing alternate forms of information and expressing their disgust with sports coverage that has become a cesspool of inanities, undisguised contempt for fans and new ideas, and thinly disguised contempt for the sport and its athletes. Because the way the play of the game has evolvedin particular, through increased power numbers that have dwarfed the statistics of past decadesa cottage industry has developed within the sports media of writers who assume something sinister is afoot. Moralistically pontificating on specious reasoning, they bet the house on a steroid story that seemed largely based on flimsy hysteria. The

Bonds Attorney Says Feds Targeting Giants Star
POSTED: 5:24 pm PST March 4, 2004 UPDATED: 11:05 am PDT April 26, 2004 NEW YORK Barry Bonds' lawyer believes the federal government is singling out the San Francisco Giants slugger in the Bay Area steroids scandal. Michael Rains told The New York Times that the federal government appears intent on trying to set a perjury trap for Bonds. Video Video On Demand: Balco Defense Attorneys Call For Investigation Of Media Leaks Video Video On Demand: An Angry Barry Bonds Defends His Reputation "I think they're trying to make an example out of him," Rains was quoted as saying by The Times. Efforts by The Associated Press to contact Rains at his office Sunday were unsuccessful. Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, was among four men indicted last month on charges of illegally supplying performance-enhancing drugs from the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. All four pleaded innocent. Bonds has denied that he used steroids, an assertion his lawyer made again to The Times.

Dec. 11: Romanowski, Robbins, Giambi Testify At Balco Hearing
POSTED: 10:21 pm PST February 11, 2004 UPDATED: 11:00 am PDT April 26, 2004 SAN FRANCISCO Baseball sluggers Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield, boxer Shane Mosley and Oakland Raiders teammates Bill Romanowski and Barret Robbins were among the latest athletes to appear before a grand jury probing a nutritional supplements lab. Also appearing Thursday was Jeremy Giambi, the younger brother of Jason. "It went good," Jason Giambi said as the brothers left the grand jury room, accompanied by agent Arn Tellem. "I can't really talk about it." Sheffield, who is in the process of trying to work out a free agent contract with the New York Yankees, said his appearance went "all right" and flashed a thumbs-up sign as he entered an elevator near the grand jury room. Jason Giambi plays for the Yankees. Jeremy Giambi played for the Boston Red Sox last season and is now a free agent. Romanowski and Robbins were among four Raiders notified by the NFL last month that they failed tests for THG, a source close to the investigation has told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The steroid was undetectable in drug tests until this summer.

Standing Up Against the Yankees
by Jeff Beresford-Howe
The first pack of the year! Baseball cards start appearing in stores just before Spring Training, an oasis in the bleakly foolish world of American sports. It's no mirage: when baseball starts, god, there will be a million games, all over the country, endless, infinite games and radio calls and every day will be something new and maybe the weather will even get nice. A very beautiful girl with long, chestnut hair handed the pack to me. That's a good omen, right? I opened it up, looked at the first card a rare action shot and suddenly I wasn't thinking ahead. I was back on October 13 in a packed ballpark in Oakland, the bottom of the seventh, after yet another maudlin "God Bless America," and there was Jeremy Giambi(AL MVP Jason Giambi's younger brother), in my mind's eye and on the card in my hand, trying to score standing up against the Yankees. I spend the whole winter trying to forget that damned play and here it is again. So I'm starting this year looking back. I can't help it, and anyway, a little clarity and a deep breath is always useful before you start something new.

Little Brother Jeremy Giambi Took Steroids Too!
As the storm clouds continue to form over Major League Baseball, Jeremy Giambi now openly admits to using steroids as reproted by the Kansas City Star. ESPN.com - MLB - Report: Jeremy Giambi says he used steroids : "KANSAS CITY, Mo. Former major leaguer Jeremy Giambi admitted he used steroids, The Kansas City Star reported Sunday.
'It's something I did,' Giambi told the newspaper. 'I apologize. I made a mistake. I moved on. I kind of want it in the past.'
Giambi, the younger brother of Yankees star Jason Giambi, signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. While he did not specifically say his brother used steroids, Jeremy Giambi noted a news conference his brother had last month in New York during which he apologized profusely, but did not say why he was apologizing.
'If you don't know what he's apologizing for,' Jeremy Giambi said, 'you must've been in a coma for two years.'

JASON GIAMBI: I TOOK STEROIDS
Jeremy Giambi admitted he also took steroids because his brother Jason "didn't die"
The New York Yankees' Jason Giambi, front, and his brother Jeremy, who played with the Boston Red Sox in 2003, arrive at the federal building Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, in San Francisco to testify before a grand jury in an investigation of the BALCO sports lab. Chronicle photo by Frederic Larson
The San Francisco Chronicle broke the story that Jason Giambi and his brother Jeremy admitted taking steroids. Jason Giambi said he had used several different steroids obtained from Greg Anderson, weight trainer for San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds.
This story was going to come out sooner or later and it is good for baseball. Many people who run Major League Baseball have hoped that they could keep the lid on the story but prosecutors and law enforcement officials have to be commended for pursuing the BALCO cheaters and law breakers. Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig has allowed baseball players to destroy their bodies through steroids in order to boost revenue and increase profits. Selig presided over the disastrous 1994 strikes and relied on juiced balls and juiced ball players to bring fans back to the seats.

Public relations ploy, my left clavicle. I've worked in public relations off-and-on for more 30 years (I started when I was 5), and, if baseball's new steroids policy is a public relations gimmick, it's one of the worst ever. You see, policies and procedures that are generated with strictly, or even primarily, PR in mind, are supposed to HELP build your image, not trash it. If both baseball fans and the media that cover baseball have any brains at all, they'll see baseball's new steroids policy for what it is - a spherical failure. That is, a flop in the making from all angles. Well, almost. The idea of random testing for every player once a year is a good one... assuming the testing procedures are sophisticated enough to catch users of "the clear" and "cream," plus whatever other clever illegal substances may be out there. Unfortunately, the battle between the users of those substances and the testers is a never-ending one. As soon as science comes up with a sure-fire way to detect a performance-enhancer, some nefarious sort will find some other exotic juice to inject into or rub onto willing subjects. It's sort of like the on-going battle between those that create computer viruses, and those that attempt to detect them... a continual back-and-forth.
