Saying that on plays of that nature "if you don't slide, you're out!" Reiterating, "Why give the umpire a chance to make the wrong call? If you slide there would be no doubt." Then later, on the SportsLeader, I hear HallofFame NBA player, Rick Barry say that he watched the play over and over and in his mind, if Giambi slides he slides right into the tag. Should Jeremy Giambi have slid on the Derek Jeter relay home to Jorge Posada that kept the game at 1-0, which ended up being the final score? In my opinion Barry's stance shows far more brass than Rome's beliefs. While it is usually the accepted belief that if a runner slides he removes all doubt from the umpire's mind to make the call, there are exceptions to the rule. Especially since Posada DID NOT TAG GIAMBI. He missed Jeremy. Really wasn't that close. Judging by Posada's proximity to the plate and where Giambi was how was it physically possible for Posada, a.k.a. Plasticman, to reach Giambi for the tag? Jeremy, as Barry suggested, made the right move because he was not tagged. Sliding would have made it an easier play for Plasticman, ahem, Posada. Why didn't the home plate umpire ask his cohorts for some assistance? Could there be a bigger play in a game of what was an exciting, intesified series? Why allow a "guess" call to stand?
