'Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth' #1 Classic Moment: July 4, 1939 By T.J. QUINN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER When the Daily News asked its distinguished panel to pick the defining moment of the Yankees' first 100 years, the runaway winner was one that transcended baseball. Any Yankee fan can recreate the scene, can intone the same New York accent and the echo in the stadium - "Yet today (today), I consider myself (myself)..." It is the heartbreaking moment that made the Yankees grander than Ruth's bat, larger than the largest stadium in the game, classier than pinstripes. Lou Gehrig's farewell speech on July 4, 1939, is still, 64 years later, the high mark of grace under pressure for all of sport. But at the time, almost no one knew what the moment meant. The day was emotional and draining, but a key element that retroactively gilded the day was missing: Few knew that Gehrig was dying. "I don't think the people knew how badly he was afflicted," remembered former Yankee great Tommy Henrich, one of the few players still living who were at the Stadium that day. "They didn't know he was going to die from it." Gehrig's speech was a snapshot that would not take focus for two years, after he died from the disease that took his name.

In The Old Ball Game, America's most beloved sportswriter, Frank Deford, masterfully chronicles how a friendship between two towering figures in baseball helped make the sport a national pastime. At the turn of the twentieth century, every American man wanted to be Christy Mathewson. One of baseball's first superstars, he was clean-cut, didn't pitch on the Sabbath, and rarely spoke a negative word about anyone. He also had one of the most The Last Night of the Yankee D
For an extraordinary handful of years around the turn of the millennium, the Yankees were baseball's unstoppable force. With four World Series championships in five seasons and a deep bench of legends and comers Clemens, Rivera, Williams, Soriano, Jeter, O'Neill they dominated the major leagues, earning the love of their hometown fans and the grudging admiration of players and spectators everywhere. For the members of the team,
Esteemed historian David McCullough covers the military side of the momentous year of 1776 with characteristic insight and a gripping narrative, adding new scholarship and a fresh perspective to the beginning of the American Revolution. It was a turbulent and confusing time. As British and American politicians struggled to reach a compromise, events on the ground escalated until war was inevitable. McCullough writes vividly about the dismal Three Nights in August
A Pulitzer Prize-winning author captures baseball"s strategic and emotional essences through a point-blank account of one three-game series viewed through the keen eyes of legendary manager Tony La Russa. Drawing on unprecedented access to a manager and his team, Bissinger brings the same revelatory intimacy to major-league baseball that he did to high school football in his classic besteller, Friday Night Lights.

Lou Gehrig's Disease Hits Vets
April 29, 2004
(CBS/AP)
ALS, which attacks nerves that control muscles, affects an estimated 30,000 people in the United States, and about 5,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. One of its most famous victims was baseball great Lou Gehrig.
(AP)
Men who served in the U.S. military during the last century appear to have an unusually high risk of dying from Lou Gehrig's disease, but experts are puzzled over why, and are uncertain whether the apparent hazard is real.
The surprising finding comes from a study of men veterans from World War I through Vietnam. It concludes they are about 60 percent more likely than non-veterans to get the often fatal illness, known formally as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
Even with the increased risk, however, the disease is still rare for veterans and non-veterans alike.
Dr. Susan Mather, environmental hazards chief at the Department of Veterans Affairs, called the discovery intriguing but added, “This study to me only raises more questions than it answers.”

Farewell to Baseball, July 4, 1939
delivered by Lou Gehrig, on July 4, 1939 Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans. Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert; also the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barow; to have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow Miller Huggins; then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology the best manager in baseball today Joe McCarthy! Sure, I'm lucky. When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift, that's something! When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies, that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles against her own daughter, that's something. When you have a father and mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body, it's a blessing! When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed, that's the finest I know.

Carol Birch,
Lou Gehrig:
The Story of a Great Man

(Silver Birch, 2004)
The audiobook of Lou Gehrig: The Story of a Great Man by Carol Birch will appeal to many types of people. The first, most obvious, group would be those fans of all things baseball who celebrate baseball heroes from the past and would enjoy listening to this CD about Gehrig even though there is nothing new they would learn. A second group of folks would be fans of Birch. According to the promotional material, Birch is "Connecticut's premier storyteller." She has received numerous awards and appeared on both television and radio. She has released several books and audiobooks. Her fans know that she is very articulate and has an effective method of projecting emotional highs and lows to her listening audience. Even if you are not a fan of baseball, you will more than likely feel joy and pain as you follow Carol's recounting of Lou's rise as an athlete and eventual death at an early age due to a disease that now bears his namesake. Folks who suffer from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Lou Gehrig's Disease or know someone who does might think that this hour-long audiobook might give them more insight in to the disease that slowly robs a victim of his muscle control. Unfortunately, that won't be the case. This story brings up the disease in the last minutes of the tale. Instead of providing information on the disease, Carol tells her listeners how Lou approached this hardship from a positive perspective. He counted himself very lucky for the blessings in his life. Some might find this inspirational and it might help them find peace with their lot in life.

NINE: A Journal of Baseball History and Culture

[Access article in PDF] In the first essay in his book, Sean Peter Kirst tells the story of how Lou Gehrig's widow, Eleanor, considered donating her husband's ashes to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mrs.Gehrig thought the Hall of Fame would provide a sanctuary from thieves or fanatics who might disturb the ashes at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York. The Hall of Fame hoped to use Gehrig's remains as part of a bigger plan to enclose the ashes of other baseball greats. In the end, however, Gehrig remained where he was. In a postscript Kirst quotes the guardian of the Gehrig estate as saying that Mrs.Gehrig's fears may have been realized, that there was evidence that the vault with the remains of baseball's most tragic hero may have, at some point, been disturbed. In The Ashes of Lou Gehrig and Other Baseball Essays , a collection of seventy-five columns written for the

As a first baseman for the New York Yankees baseball team, Lou Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games from 1925 to 1939, setting a major league record and had a career batting average of .340. He once hit four home runs in a game. On July 4, 1939, he stood before 60,000 fans at Yankee Stadium and confirmed what everyone seemed to know, that the "Pride of the Yankees" had been dealt a terrible blow, diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (now often called Lou Gehrig's disease), a rare disease that causes spinal paralysis. Less than two years later, on June 2, 1941, he died in Riverdale, N.Y. Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got.
