Henry Louis Gehrig American professional baseball player, born June 19, 1903, New York City; died June 2, 1941, Riverdale, N.Y. Nickname: The Iron Horse. Associated eponyms: Charcot's disease A rare disease of the nervous system with degeneration of the nerves conducting signals to muscles. Biography: Lou Gehrig was educated at Columbia University. He played first base for the New York Yankees of the American League from 1924 to 1939, when the disease forced him to abandon his career. Called the Iron Horse, he established a record for the number of consecutive games played by a professional baseball player, taking part in 2130 games in succession. This record, for decades believed to be unbeatable, was eventually beaten by Cal Ripken, with both President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore present, in 1995. Gehrig bid farewell to his fans on July 4, 1939, on Yankee Stadium: That year he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Two years later he was dead from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, in the U.S.A now commonly known as Lou Gherig's disease. It has been entered here as Charcot's disease, named for the French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, who described it in 1869.

Lou Gehrig
Henry Louis Gehrig , born Ludwig Heinrich Gehrig June 19 June 2 ), was an American first baseman in Major League Baseball who played his entire career for the New York Yankees and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in . His career was prematurely ended by, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis a degenerative terminal illness which has come to be widely known under his name. He was born on Manhattan island in New York City , the son of German immigrants . He attended Columbia University , where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity . However, he could not play intercollegiate baseball due to his having played baseball for a summer professional league during his freshman year. Gehrig was a powerful hitter, a fine fielder, and a loyal teammate. If he was not quite the player his teammate Babe Ruth was, he was a feared complement in the lineup, and a more reliable presence to the team. It was no accident that Gehrig, not Ruth, hit cleanup in the Yankees batting order. Gehrig played from to . In his career he hit 493 home runs and played in 2,130 consecutive games, an endurance record that stood until

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .

Lou Gehrig's career is bigger than his stats.
His spirit is more significant than the disease which destroyed him.
His story is more than a baseball story,
Yet it brings to life an extraordinary time in baseball history. When Ted Williams rated the twenty best hitters of all time, he listed Gehrig second only to Babe Ruth - as Gehrig often was during the decade they played together. Gehrig is first in this story, as he was, and is, in the hearts of many. Here is my version of this great man's story. Lou Gehrig's story changed the direction of my career. Baseball looks to clinch Lou Gehrig division
Four games against Cornell will decide postseason fate

Everything is in the baseball team's favor this weekend as it tries to clinch the Ivy League's Lou Gehrig Division title. All Princeton has to do to be crowned champion is win one of four games against Cornell in a pair of doubleheaders. The first half of the home-and-home series is on Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y., after which both teams will travel to Princeton to finish up the series and the Ivy League season at Clarke Field.
The Tigers (21-17 overall, 9-7 Ivy League) currently sit on top of their division, one of two in the Ivy League. The Big Red (11-26, 5-10) and Columbia are tied for second place and still have a prayer, while Penn closes out the division in fourth place and is mathematically eliminated from contention.

After winning nine straight Lou Gehrig Division titles from 1996-2004, the baseball team has established itself as the Yankees of the Ivy League. Even the Yankees miss the postseason every so often, though.
Indeed, the Tigers (17-24 overall, 10-10 Ivy League) fell short of expectations this spring, never finding their groove throughout the season. Though Princeton displayed flashes of brilliance, it was unable to maintain that level of play for a significant amount of time. The Tigers were mediocre when it mattered most, winning just three of their final eight games to slip into second place in the Gehrig division. After starting the season with nine straight losses on its annual Southern road swing, Princeton slowly rounded into form. The Orange and Black swept a pair of doubleheaders against Brown and Yale in the first weekend of league play, but then managed only one win in four games against Red Rolfe Division powers Dartmouth and Harvard. After splitting a four-game set with Penn in Philadelphia in mid-April, Princeton sat atop the Gehrig standings, seemingly on its way to an Ivy League Championship Series matchup with Red Rolfe division champ Harvard.

On June 2, 1941, just days short of his 38th birthday, Henry Louis Gehrig died at his house in the pleasant New York City neighborhood of Riverdale. The disease that killed him, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, was almost entirely unknown at the time, to the extent, Jonathan Eig writes, that "many doctors in the United States had never heard of ALS." Gehrig, the great first baseman of the New York Yankees indeed, commonly conceded to have been the greatest first baseman in baseball history changed all that. In the years after his death, ALS became near-universally known as Lou Gehrig's disease, as it is to this day; for all the advances medical science has made in the six decades since Gehrig's death, "his" disease still has no known cure. On July 4, 1939, two years before his death, a severely weakened Gehrig returned to Yankee Stadium, not long after he had announced his retirement from baseball. The Yankees were determined to hold a day in his honor. Gehrig, who was shy and reserved, dreaded the occasion, but he rose to it. Wearing the Yankees' uniform, he approached the microphones after various tributes had been paid and gifts presented, and stood there in silence. Finally, he spoke. "For the past two weeks you've been reading about a bad break," he told the packed ballpark. "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." He saluted his teammates, his parents, his wife, and then said: "So I close in saying that I might have had a bad break, but I have an awful lot to live for. Thank you."
