by ruz Neifi Perez 19 to 21 Yes, Jimmie Foxx #24, June 27, 2005 News Item: June 1, 1942 – Jimmie Foxx is selected off the waiver list by the Chicago Cubs. Jimmie Foxx had a problem. Actually, he had a couple of problems. One of them was why he was on waivers in June 1942 at the age of 34, despite the fact that he had hit 524 home runs to that point in his career. David Halberstam, in Summer of ’49, expressed it this way, “ Jimmie Foxx … delighted at walking into bars and yelling, `The drinks are on the house – old Double X is here.’” Maybe one of the reasons he had that problem was his other problem… a gentleman named Lou Gehrig . You see, Lou Gehrig ’s major league career ran from 1923 to 1939. And James (Jimmie, Double X, The Beast) Emory Foxx’ career ran from 1925 to 1945. Almost exact American League contemporaries, both played first base, and Gehrig was the greatest first baseman of all time. In other words, as Gehrig was overshadowed on his own team by Babe Ruth , so too was Jimmie Foxx overshadowed at first base by Gehrig. But, make no mistake about it

Baseball Editorials, Analysis, and Talk from Richard Lederer

Drilling Deeper Into The Greatest HR Hitters Ever
by Richard Lederer Trying to rank the greatest home run sluggers in history is no easy feat. Thus far, I have produced lists based on the standard cumulative totals as well as lists with the differences between the individual player and his league average expressed in absolute and relative terms. My main problem with ranking players based on cumulative totals only is that such rankings tend to be biased toward longevity and those who played in eras favoring that particular stat. As such, I prefer basing my rankings on how a player performed vs. the league average. The question then comes down to whether I should use absolute or relative differences. At the risk of losing those readers who may be mathematically challenged, let me try to explain why I think the best system is a combination of the two. Although the ratios are the same, hitting 30 HR in a season vs. 10 for league average is clearly worth more than producing 12 HR in a league with an average of 4. As a result, a formula based on the ratio of HR vs. the league average will tend to overvalue hitters who played during the dead ball era and undervalue those who played during the live ball era.

RED SOX LEGENDS
Jimmie Foxx - 1936-1942
Foxx was already a seasoned ballplayer when Athletics owner Connie Mack traded him to Boston from Philadelphia. Twice an MVP and winner of the Triple Crown in 1933, Foxx was a welcome addition to a club that had not had much to celebrate since winning the World Series in 1918. Although the team still finished with a losing record and sixth in the American League standings, the first baseman has an immediate impact for the Red Sox, hitting 41 home runs for the Red Sox in his first season with the club while collected 143 RBI and batting .338. Two years later, Foxx enjoyed his best season with Boston, clubbing 50 home runs and driving in 175 runs, both team records to this day, while batting .349, just missing his chance for a second Triple Crown thanks to "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg, who left the yard 58 times that year. However, his efforts did earn him the distinction of being named the AL MVP that season, his third such honor. Foxx remained with Boston until the Chicago Cubs claimed him off waivers in June of 1942. His numbers with the organization place him seventh all-time in club history in batting average at .320, third all-time in slugging percentage at .605, seventh all-time in home runs with 222, and sixth all-time in RBI with 788. Foxx retired after the 1945 season and was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1951 on his fourth ballot.

For 10 years, Mark Millikin researched aquaculture at NOAA labs in Maryland and South Carolina, bolstering understanding of nutrient requirements for blue crabs, striped bass and Malaysian prawns. For the last 18, he’s helped manage the fisheries regulation process, working closely with eight Regional Fishery Management Councils, especially in New England and the Mid-Atlantic. These councils are responsible for fish stocks three to 200 miles offshore.
Along the way, Mark developed a passion for profiling first base power hitter Jimmie Foxx. A baseball Hall of Famer , Jimmie Foxx sent balls sailing for teams in Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago from 1925 until 1945. Called a right-handed Babe Ruth, he hit 30 or more home runs each year from 1929 to 1940. Foxx is now the focus of a biography authored by Mark and published by The Scarecrow Press.
Both Mark and Jimmie Foxx grew up in Maryland. Both also hooked into baseball in their teens. Mark says he relished the research process, tracking down a whole cadre of former team mates and opponents as well as relatives still living on Maryland’s eastern shore. While the press labeled Jimmie Foxx “the beast,” Marks says he was really a very gentle guy – out of the ballpark.

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Oakland Athletics Baseball History Oakland Athletics, professional baseball team and one of four teams in the West Division of the American League (AL). Formerly based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Kansas City, Missouri, the Athletics (also known as the A’s) play at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland, California, and wear uniforms of white, yellow, and green.
The Athletics have enjoyed success in nearly every decade since their founding in 1901. The team’s first manager and owner, Connie Mack, guided the club to nine AL pennants and five World Series titles during his remarkable 50-year career. Among the many Hall of Famers that Mack managed were Frank Baker, Mickey Cochrane, Eddie Collins, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Napoleon Lajoie, and Al Simmons.
In the early 1970s Oakland assembled some of the most powerful teams in major league history. Led by Vida Blue, Bert Campaneris, Rollie Fingers, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, and Joe Rudi, Oakland won five consecutive division titles and three World Series championships from 1971 to 1975. Tony LaRussa directed the A’s to three straight AL pennants from 1988 to 1990 with the help of sluggers José Canseco and Mark McGwire and base-stealer Rickey Henderson.

Baseball Fever The Teams of Yesteryear Philadelphia Athletics PDA View Full Version : Jimmie Foxx GIANT 06-27-2002, 07:27 PM Is there a more forgotten Hall of Famer than "The Beast?" My father often told me that Foxx was the best right handed hitter he ever saw play. Eldon Aucker in his biography claimed that Foxx was the most decent person he ever met and was stuck in a terrible marriage. When he retired, Foxx a three time MVP in the American League tried to get back in the game. I have read that Connie Mack allegedly turned down his request to work for the A's as a coach due to a problem with alcohol. LouGehrig 06-27-2002, 07:44 PM You are right. I guess it is because most young fans do NOT have a feel for baseball history, which is also true of most active players.
In the old days, the writers would refer and talk about the older players like Foxx, but today, with all the flash and little substance, the only time we hear about Foxx or Simmons or Hornsby is when some record is being approached or broken.
Foxx had some fantastic seasons, hit for power, and hit for average. He is one of the most underrated all time greats, except among knowlegeable fans.
