INNING 7: THE CAPITAL OF BASEBALL
Fifties Baseball
by George F. Will Guiltlessness. Our fat fifties cars, how we loved them, revved them; no thought of pollution. Exhaust smoke, cigarette smoke, factory smoke, all romance. Romance of consumption at its height.
"When Everyone Was Pregnant" George F. Will. Photo Credit: George Will But big muscular Buicks and other fat fifties cars (for which Ike launched the biggest public works program ever, the Interstate Highway System) were not the best symbol of an American decade of pent-up energy busting loose. Remember Ted Kluszewski's biceps, those huge ham hocks erupting from the then sleeveless uniform jerseys of the Cincinnati Reds? (Or, as that team was called for a while in that Cold War decade, the Redlegs.) Baseball in the fifties carried a big stick. Even shortstops, who once upon a time had been considered inoffensive little guys, got into the act: The Cubs' Ernie Banks won two consecutive MVP awards for seasons (1958, 1959) in which he hit a total of 92 home runs. The Baseball Encyclopedia says Kluszewski was 6'2" and 225 pounds. That was mighty big then, but no more. Arguably the most striking change in baseball in the four decades since then is the sheer scale of the players. In 1953 the Indians' Al Rosen had a monster season: .336, 43 home runs, 145 RBIs. He missed a triple crown by .001, to the Senators' Mickey Vernon. Rosen was considered a "burly slugger." He was 5'101/2" and 180 pounds. Baseball is still, as Bill Veeck said, a game unlike others because to play it you do not need to be either seven feet tall or seven feet wide. But by 1987 Nolan Ryan (6'2", 210 pounds) was smaller than five other teammates on the Astros' pitching staff.

Consistent Hitters and Similar Seasons
by Tom Ruane
I have always been a fan of consistent players. Sure it's thrilling when a player like Greg Vaughn or Gary Sheffield has a break-out season, but there's something to be said for a player you can count on, year-in and year-out, to perform at a predictable level. This lets a team's fans (as well as its GM) worry about other things when thinking about the upcoming season. So who have been our most (and least) consistent players? Well, one way to determine this would be to pick some measurement (like batting average or ERA) and see how much it changes from year to year. My favorite offensive measurement that's easy to calculate is OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) so let's start with that. I decided to use a 100 plate appearance per season minimum because (at least initially) I wanted to concentrate on performance rather than opportunity. I also figured it might bring to the foreground players often overlooked. So what player had the most consistent back-to-back seasons? Rusty Staub, from 1975 to 1976. Here are his stats:

Photo History
Nellie Fox and Ted Williams
Monthly feature, courtesy of FC Associates, www.fcassociates.com
Ted Williams, "The Splendid Splinter," was a major league ballplayer who can rightfully claim to be the greatest hitter of all time. Despite missing five years to military duty during his prime, Ted’s career numbers are astounding: the highest on base average in history at .483; the second highest slugging average, behind Babe Ruth, at .634; 521 home runs and a lifetime batting average of .344.
That Washington Senators owner Robert Short would coax Ted Williams out of retirement after nine leisurely years fishing at his home in Florida would be the biggest story in baseball at the end of the 1968 season. Ted knew hitting, agreed to manage the Senators, and smartly surrounded himself with fine coaches like the former great gloveman and future Hall of Famer Nellie Fox. The result? The team won an astounding 86 games in 1969 and "Teddy Ballgame" was named American League Manager of the Year by the A.P.

Expensive Love
(I John 4:9-10)
When our son Doug was little, he was really into collecting baseball cards. Actually, so was I at that age - except they were on stone tablets back then. I grew up in Chicago, and I loved the Chicago White Sox - and my favorite player, Nelson - or Nellie - Fox. Nellie was their all-star second basemen who was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Now those baseball card companies print a lot of the less-known players, and a comparative few of the stars. So, try as I would, I could not get a Nellie Fox card. I could get 6 of every other White Sox player, but Nellie Fox - not a chance. One day Doug and I were at a big baseball card show - I was really just along for the ride. Then, at one table, there he was - Nellie Fox. I told Doug - who was about 10 years old at the time- about my childhood search for that card. I wasn’t going to spend money on it - I was just happy to see the old boy, just under glass. I had come to doubt whether such a card had ever existed. Doug and I split up at that point, and he started cruising the tables with the modest savings he had from his allowances. About 20 minutes later, I felt someone tapping on my arm - it was my son. He was reaching up, holding something in his hand. He said, "Here, Dad. I love you." And there in his hand was that Nellie Fox card. He had spent everything he had on it. I was wiped out. I felt very loved. Well, I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have
