A catchy new name in left: Fisk Pole
June 14, 2005 As Carlton Fisk stood next to the foul pole in Fenway Park he made famous 30 seasons ago, he experienced ''all kinds of nostalgic feelings" during the formal dedication of what will now be known as the Fisk Pole. ''You wonder if you're deserving. Why not the Ted Williams Pole or the Yaz Pole?" said Fisk before last night's game against the Cincinnati Reds, the team that opposed the Red Sox in the 1975 World Series, the signature moment of which was Fisk's homer off the pole in the 12th inning of Game 6. ''This is a pretty big honor and certainly better than not being remembered at all." Though the euphoria of that classic World Series game will always be with him, said Fisk, there was also a ''hollow feeling" because the Sox lost Game 7 and Fisk never played in another World Series. There was a surprise in store for Fisk, who threw out last night's first pitch to former batterymate Luis Tiant, after which they exchanged a hug at home plate. It came when Red Sox owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner presented Fisk with a 2004 world championship ring as they huddled atop the Green Monster, prompting Fisk to hold up both hands at a post-ceremony news conference to show he now had Hall of Fame and World Series rings. ''That was a total surprise," said Fisk, whose No. 27 already has been retired by the Red Sox and who exchanged greetings with Reds players Ken Griffey whose father played for the '75 Reds and Sean Casey.

Cincinnati Reds' Pete Rose, right, runs to celebrate winning the World Series against the Boston Red Sox with teammates pitcher Will McEnaney, rear left, and catcher Johnny Bench in Boston, in this Oct. 22, 1975 photo. (AP File Photo) The 1975 World Series was a movable feast that charmed the nation. The nightmare of Vietnam had just ended. We were still shaking off Watergate. In Boston, the ordeal of busing featured class warfare in the streets. They were not the best of times. Then along came the Reds, the Red Sox, and Game 6 and we discovered baseball could still inspire us. It was joyous. The teams were well matched. Both had cruised to pennants though neither had superior pitching. Boston had the slight edge in offense while Cincinnati had more speed, deeper defense. Combined, they had six chaps (Morgan, Bench, Perez, Anderson, Yastrzemski, Fisk) since enshrined in Cooperstown and another four (Rice, Tiant, Rose, Concepcion) who might yet join them. Boston's entire nucleus of position players was home-grown, while Joe Morgan was the only cog in The Big Red Machine not produced by Cincinnati's farm system. A power throughout the '70s, the Reds were favored. But the Sox had a highly emotional if unstated edge: a burning desire to win for long-suffering owner Tom Yawkey. For while no one talked about it, we all knew the old man was dying. Yawkey made it to Oakland to see his boys bury the remains of the A's dynasty in the playoffs. He came down to the field and hobnobbed before the finale, then mingled briefly with his champagne-spraying revelers after they clinched. While weak, he was beaming that night in the bowels of the A's ballpark. But he looked 100 years old. Few of us ever saw him again.

It may have lacked the jaw-dropping athleticism of Mays' catch or the beauty of Larsen's perfect game, but Carlton Fisk's game-winning homer leading off the bottom of the 12th of a tied Game 6 of the 1975 Series may have been baseball's brightest-shining moment. It capped what many consider to be the greatest game in the greatest Series ever played. We look back and almost forget that, once again, the Red Sox were the losers in the Series after they dropped Game 7. But for one night, baseball's most haunted franchise was on top of the world. Carlton Fisk
Hall of Fame Baseball Player
One of the AL's premier catchers for almost two decades, Carlton Fisk overcame a series of serious injuries early in his career to establish himself as a marvel of durability at baseball's most taxing position. A ten-time All-Star and the all-time leader in home runs by a catcher (351) and in games caught (2,226), Fisk was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000.

A true New Englander, Fisk was born in Vermont, attended the University of New Hampshire, and in January 1967 was the first-round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox, the fourth player chosen in the nation. When he arrived in the big leagues in 1972, he already had a nickname (Pudge, from his childhood), and a trademark wad of tobacco that bulged inside one cheek. At the age of 21, he beat out Duane Josephson and Bob Montomery for the full-time job and never looked back.
Fisk was an immediate star. He hit .293 with 22 homers and a league-leading nine triples in '72, won a Gold Glove, and became the first player ever to win the Rookie of the Year award unanimously. But he proved to be a magnet for injuries over the next few seasons. His average slipped to .246 in 1973 and he missed the first three weeks of the 1974 season after a foul tip off the bat of Joe Torre struck his groin in spring training. His season ended early when his knee was seriously injured in a home-plate collision with Cleveland's Leron Lee on June 28. As it turned out, Fisk missed nearly a full year. An errant pitch from Detroit's Fred Holdsworth in spring training 1975 sidelined him until June. But less than a week after he returned, Boston moved into first and Fisk hit .331 in 79 games to help the Red Sox reach the World Series.

by Richard Lederer Mike Piazza Carlton Fisk for the most ever by a catcher. The 35-year-old superstar has now gone deep 362 times in his career (177 with the Dodgers and 185 with the Mets), passing Joe DiMaggio Jim Thome Gary Sheffield Manny Ramirez , and Alex Rodriguez ) who are also within striking distance of that level. Fisk's fight BASEBALL: Homewood cancer support center reciprocates support for Sox Hall of Famer

However, to the workers and volunteers at Homewood's Jennifer S. Fallick Cancer Support Center, the Hall of Fame White Sox catcher is the guy who is known to stop by bearing bags of Dairy Queen Dilly Bars. Well, that and a whole lot more. About 90 workers, volunteers and friends of the support center were on hand Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field to cheer on Fisk on Carlton Fisk Tribute Day, an afternoon that saw the White Sox organization honor him with a life-sized bronze statue on the outfield concourse.
When a few of the upper-deck ticket holders talked their way past an usher and made it to the ceremony, Fisk looked up.
"Where are the Dilly Bars?" he asked.
"I guess he thought we were gonna bring him Dilly Bars," joked Susan Mason, the support center's manager of community relations and a Homewood resident.
They didn't bring any ice cream, but group members did bring an assortment of banners, matching lime green T-shirts that read, "Fisk Fan," and the loudest cheers they could muster from Section 516.
