Carlton Fisk caught more games than any other player in baseball history. He hit the most home runs as a catcher. He was Rookie of the Year in 1972, the first to be chosen unanimously. He won a Gold Glove award the same year. He played 23 years in the majors, and was chosen to the All-Star game in eleven of those seasons. His .481 slugging average ranks as the 10th best in Red Sox history. In the summer of 2000, he was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. But "Pudge" will always be remembered in the hearts of New Englanders for one moment more than 28 Octobers ago...
October 21, 1975 Listen to the home run call! The 1975 World Series pitted the Red Sox against Cincinnati's Big Red Machine. Carlton Fisk, Dwight Evans, Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski, Luis Tiant, and Bill Lee faced off against Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Dave Concepcion, and Ken Griffey for one of the most exciting series in history. The Red Sox won the opener 6-0 behind the pitching of Luis Tiant. El Tiante held the Reds scoreless, and the Sox scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 1-0 series lead. The next night, Bill Lee held Cincinnati to one run for eight innings, but the Reds scored twice in the ninth to take the game 3-2 and even the series at one game apiece. Cincinnati won the third game, 6-5. The game saw six home runs, including one by pinch-hitter Bernie Carbo, and a controversial play, in which a clear case of catcher's interference was called an error and led to the winning run. In Game 4, Tiant threw another complete game, using 163 pitches and beating the Reds 5-4. The next night Cincinnati won, 6-2. After having a day off to travel to Boston, the series was delayed three more days by rain.

"I just told him [Deion Sanders] I thought that there was a right way and a wrong way to play the game, and he was playing it wrong, because it offended guys like me. And if he didn't care to play it right, let's go at it, right here at home plate," says Carlton Fisk on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. He's often said that the smartest thing he did in baseball was become a catcher. The mask and glove were never tools of ignorance for Carlton Fisk. Nicknamed "Pudge" in his youth because of his stocky build, he emerged as not only one of the best catchers of his era, but as one of the best ever. Fisk played 24 seasons in the majors, retiring as baseball's all-time leader in games caught with 2,226 and in home runs by a catcher with 351. (He lost the latter record in 2004 when Mike Piazza passed him). Fisk's .269 lifetime batting average with 376 homers and 1,330 RBI are proof that he could do more than call a good game. He also became a New England hero. The image of Fisk finessing his ball fair for a home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series is one that will endure as long as the game is played.

The best World Series games since Fisk
By Joe Sheehan
Special to ESPN.com
Editor's note: The team of writers from the Baseball Prospectus (tm) normally writes for ESPN.com Insider. This is a special free version of their work. You can check out their web site at baseballprospectus.com The "greatness" of an individual game isn't something that can be reduced to a formula or a metric. We can't quantify drama, and it would be silly of us to try. What we have done is asked the Baseball Prospectus staff for their opinions on the five best World Series games since Carlton Fisk's legendary home run in Game 6 of the 1975 Series. The results are heavy on games in the last 15 years, which may reflect the age of our staff. It's not any slight to the three New York/Los Angeles showdowns of the 1977-1981 period, or the exciting seven-game World Series of 1979 and 1982. It's just that the games you consider the greatest are the ones you got to experience, not the ones you read about, and our lists all reflected that fact. Here's our top five: No. 5: 1985 Game 6, Royals vs. Cardinals at Kansas City
