Petco Park Events The San Diego Padres had a solid season in 2004, and they hope to win the National League West division race this year. The Padres were in the thick of the West Division battle for much of 2004, and getting tickets to see this potential champion should be a high priority. The San Diego Padres Baseball Club, starting with the 2004 baseball season, makes PETCO Park its home. The $500 million-dollar park replaced Qualcom Stadium, formerly Jack Murphy Stadium, where the Padres played baseball since they were awarded a team for the 1969 season. The capacity of PETCO Park is 46,000. The Padres saw the new stadium boost ticket sales and renew fan support. CLICK HERE TO FIND

The Padres have reached post-season play three times in their 35-year history, but have failed to win the World Series in two attempts, losing in 1984 and 1998. The most famous San Diego Padre baseball player is Tony Gwynn. Tony Gwynn made his major league debut with the Padres in 1982 and finished his 20-year career, all with the Padres, in 2001 with a lifetime .338 batting average and 3,141 hits, making him a first-ballot Hall of Fame guarantee. Tony also won 8 batting titles, tying him with Honus Wagner for the National League mark. When Tony is inducted into the Hall of Fame, he will join Dave Winfield, who is the first and presently the only Hall of Famer to go into the Hall as a Padre. Other Hall of Famers who once played in a Padres' uniform included Willie McCovey, Gaylord Perry, Rollie Fingers and Ozzie Smith.

Rollie Fingers bounced between the bullpen and the starting rotation in the early years of his career before Oakland decided to make him a reliever. The move proved to be a wise one. Fingers was known as much for his trademark handlebar mustache as he was for his slider. He posted 341 career saves and led the league in the category 3 times. In his 17 year career, he had 10 seasons in which he is credited with 20 or more saves. In two seasons, 1977 and 1978, he broke the 30-save mark to lead the league with 35 and 37 (his career high) respectively. In his early years in Oakland, he made 35 starts, but only posted 4 complete games. He posted 17 or more saves per season from 1971-1976, but he was splitting save opportunities with Darold Knowles. In 1976, Oakland owner Charlie Finley tried to sell Fingers and OF Joe Rudi to the Red Sox for $1 million each. The deal was vetoed by the commissioner and Fingers signed with San Diego in 1977 as a free agent. After two seasons of 30+ saves, he started to have some arm problems.

Cooperstown Confidential: Thirty Years Ago... Birth of the Mustache Gang
by Bruce Markusen
Today's major league players freely make bold fashion statements. Many players wear goatees. An increasing number of players wear earrings, some featuring more than one on each ear. And players have worn mustaches and beards for years. Such practices have become so commonplace that they might not seem newsworthy anymore. Why did Jackson's facial hair cause such a furor, while Allen's spring training mustache had created barely a ripple two years earlier? After all, both were high-profile players, among the most talented power hitters of the era. Unlike Allen, Jackson boasted that he would keep the mustache in place for Opening Day, and would add a beard, as well. Given Jackson's celebrity status-and the fact that no major league players had been documented wearing a mustache in a regular season game since Wally Schang of the Philadelphia A's in 1914-the mustache affair made major news in 1972. The new mustachioed look created a stir in A's camp, quickly cornering the attention of owner Charlie Finley and manager Dick Williams. "The story as I remember it," says former A's first baseman Mike Hegan, "was that Reggie came into spring training with a mustache, and Charlie didn't like it. So he told Dick to tell Reggie to shave it off. And Dick told Reggie to shave it off, and Reggie told Dick what to do. This got to be a real sticking point, and so I guess Charlie and Dick had a meeting, and they said well, 'Reggie's an individual so maybe we can try some reverse psychology here.' Charlie told a couple of other guys... to start growing a mustache. Then, [if] a couple of other guys did it, Reggie would shave his off, and you know, everything would be OK."
