Historical Hot Stove by Bruce Markusen Previous Columns Thirty Years Ago… Birth of the Mustache Gang Today’s major league players freely make bold fashion statements. Many players wear goatees. An increasing number of players wear earrings, some featuring more than one on each ear. And players have worn mustaches and beards for years. Such practices have become so commonplace that they might not seem newsworthy anymore. And why exactly did so few players dare to feature mustaches or beards during a half a century of baseball history? After all, no official major league rule had ever banned players from wearing facial hair. Yet, there did exist an unwritten rule in the conservative sport, one that that strongly frowned upon the mustachioed or bearded look. In addition, several individual teams instituted their own formal policies (most notably the Cincinnati Reds in the 1960s), policies that forbade their players from sporting facial hair. Oh, you want to grow a mustache or a beard. Go right ahead. And by the way, here’s the spot you’ll be occupying on the bench for the next several days.

The greatest honor bestowed upon a professional baseball player is enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Just one percent (1%) of those who have played Major League Baseball have a plaque in Cooperstown. Overall, 237 of the tens of thousands of individuals who have served the game as Major and Negro League players, managers, executives, pioneers and umpires have a permanent residence in the Hall of Fame Gallery. The Members have been elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America and specially appointed committees, such as the Veterans' Committee, and the now-defunct Committee on the Negro Leagues. Who's Alive and Who's Dead
Living Members of the Baseball Hall of Fame
Last updated: 12 January 2005 There are currently 62 living members of the Hall of Fame. This includes 57 players, four managers, and one executive. (Most managers were former players and many players later become managers, but they are usually voted into the Hall as one or the other, as their career merits). Of the 62, 49 were voted in by the baseball writers association and 12 were voted in by the veterans committee. The veterans committee is viewed by many as a "back door" into the Hall and, therefore, it is considered more prestigious to be inducted by the baseball writers. There is also one living member of the Hall who was inducted by the Negro Leagues committee, a temporary organization formed to bestow Hall of Fame honors on players from the days before baseball became racially integrated. The list below gives each living Hall member, in order of date of birth. It also indicates how each member was inducted. No designation means "player inducted by the baseball writers." What do you think they're saying? Paula and baseball legend, Ted Williams, exchange secrets at the dinner table. "Would you two like to share that with the rest of us?"
Who's the biggest kid you know? Competitor Magazine's publisher / owner, Bob Babbitt is all smiles after getting Don Larson's autograph. Hey Babbitt, next time, try to get it on a real baseball - not a day glow green softball!
Paula and long time sponsor, Tim Twardzick (Mrs. T's Pierogies), who also happens to sponsor the MSSC and is the all around patron saint of triathlon. If you ever run in to Tim, say thanks.
Mike Reilly, the "Voice of the Ironman" introduced Paula for her Hall of Fame induction. Mike was in good company with the evening's emcee, Dick Enbergh (hope we spelled Dick's last name right).
Paula Newby-Fraser and Rollie Fingers are Inducted into San Diego's Hall of Fame
It happened back in February but it's still worth remembering here. On February 15th, 2000, the San Diego Hall of Champions held their annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Past winners and this year's inductees were present for the gala affair which inducted legendary pitcher, Rollie Fingers and triathlon legend Paula Newby-Fraser.
In her acceptance speech, Paula thanked the Hall of Champions for not only recognizing her but the sport of Triathlon. San Diego sports legends from tennis, baseball, wrestling, golf, football, etc., etc. were on hand and one of the funniest parts of the evening occurred when Paula mentioned that she was excited to have Padre outfielder and hitting king, Tony Gwynn join her for a week of training. Tony almost died on the spot and said, "Well, I'm not going to hear the end of that from the fellas."

TEAM HISTORY Milwaukee Brewers Baseball History Milwaukee Brewers, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the Central Division of the National League (NL). Formerly the Seattle Pilots, the club plays home games at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and wears uniforms of white, blue, and gold. The team takes its name from the city’s beer-making industry. Until 1998, Milwaukee was a member of the American League (AL). The team’s switch to the NL made the Brewers the first club to switch from one major league to the other since the AL was established in 1901.
In 1982 the powerful hitting of Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, and Cecil Cooper led the Brewers to their first pennant and only World Series appearance. Yount won two AL most valuable player (MVP) awards, batted over .300 six times, and collected 3142 hits during his 20-year career as a shortstop and center fielder.
The club that became the Brewers originated as the Seattle Pilots, a team that joined the AL in 1969. The Pilots had poor fan support, however, and the financially strapped franchise was sold before the beginning of the 1970 season to a Milwaukee group that outbid investors in Seattle and Dallas. The club, renamed the Brewers, did not fare much better in its new home, losing more than 90 games in six of its first eight seasons. Starring on Milwaukee’s early teams were second baseman Pedro Garcia and outfielder Dave May.

Formerly based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Kansas City, Missouri, the Athletics (also known as the A’s) play at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland, California, and wear uniforms of white, yellow, and green.
The Athletics have enjoyed success in nearly every decade since their founding in 1901. The team’s first manager and owner, Connie Mack, guided the club to nine AL pennants and five World Series titles during his remarkable 50-year career. Among the many Hall of Famers that Mack managed were Frank Baker, Mickey Cochrane, Eddie Collins, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Napoleon Lajoie, and Al Simmons.
In the early 1970s Oakland assembled some of the most powerful teams in major league history. Led by Vida Blue, Bert Campaneris, Rollie Fingers, Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, and Joe Rudi, Oakland won five consecutive division titles and three World Series championships from 1971 to 1975. Tony LaRussa directed the A’s to three straight AL pennants from 1988 to 1990 with the help of sluggers José Canseco and Mark McGwire and base-stealer Rickey Henderson.
