"I wish spring training started tomorrow," he said Thursday, a day after reaching agreement with the New York Mets on a minor league contract. "I'm ready to go. I know there's an opportunity for me here, and I'm hoping to make the most of my chance." The deal with the Mets, which calls for a base salary of $700,000 if he is added to the 40-man roster, capped an exciting week for the free-agent pitcher. Erickson celebrated his 36th birthday Monday and married "Monday Night Football" sideline reporter Lisa Guerrero in Hawaii the following day. Erickson called his friend, Mets reliever John Franco, on Wednesday night. "I knew he had just gotten married; he was probably the last person I expected to hear from," Franco said. "I could tell from his voice how excited he was to join us. I know he's always wanted to pitch in New York. He's such a competitor, and if he's healthy, which he says he is, I know he'll help us." Once one of baseball's most durable pitchers, Erickson has missed two of the past three seasons because of injuries. He was out in 2001 after having reconstructive surgery on his right elbow and was sidelined last year after a shoulder operation.
