Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

Rehabbing outfielder goes 4-for-6 in second outing against big-league pitching

PHOENIX And on the second day, he raked.
Jermaine Dye, who went hitless over seven at-bats last Thursday in his first game action against big-league pitching, on Monday played in another simulated game and went 4-for-6 with two doubles and three walks.
Facing A's relievers Mike Holtz, Mike Venafro and Jim Mecir as well as 19-year-old Jeremy Bonderman at Oakland's minor-league complex, Dye looked like a different man than the one who struggled to make contact in last week's game. Fullabull 03-23-2002, 03:46 AM It does not appear that Jermaine Dye will return by the final week of spring training, as originally hoped.
"It still feels like I'm running on a little bone." No, that's not good news. Fullabull 04-02-2002, 06:27 PM Dye has felt no additional pain in his broken leg as he has increased his activity recently, according to the Contra Costa Times. Dye has been running sprints and doing drills in the outfield. As soon as he is able to stop fast, Dye will be able to get back into the A's lineup.

Jermaine Dye
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jermaine Terrell Dye (born January 28 in Oakland, California ) is a right fielder in Major League Baseball who has joined the Chicago White Sox for the 2005 season. Dye also has played with the Atlanta Braves Kansas City Royals (1997-2001) and Oakland Athletics (2001-04). He bats and throws right-handed. Dye attended Cosumnes River College in California, and was selected by Atlanta in the 1993 amateur draft. In a nine-season career, Dye is a .272 hitter with 161 home runs and 611 RBI in 1039 games . He made the American League All-Star team in . After his breakout season in 1999 with the Kansas City Royals, Dye looked like an emerging superstar. Dye was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2001, where he continued to play well. However, in the 2001 American League Division Series, Dye fouled a ball off the plate which bounced back into his leg, breaking it. Dye struggled to return to form after the injury, and it is arguable he has never been the same since. edit

Baseball Prospectus's Reaction to Mulder Deal By Tony on Tue Dec 21st, 2004
This is from Baseball Prospectus: "The big news over the weekend was the A's sending Mark Mulder the Cardinals, the second time in three days that they'd traded one of their "Big Three" to an NL contender. At first, I though the A's made a poor deal, but I think that was largely a reflection of my not liking the trade of Tim Hudson to Atlanta. Once I evaluated the second deal on its merits, though, I not only found myself coming around on it, but beginning to see the transaction as part of a pattern that reflects a reversal by the A's. Mulder brought back right-handers Dan Haren and Kiko Calero and catching prospect Daric Barton. Barton has hit in the low minors, but may not be a catcher by the time he reaches Triple-A, much less the majors. He could end up as anything at this point, so consider just the pitchers for now. I'm not convinced that in 2005, Mark Mulder is going to be better than Dan Haren. Forget money. I think the indicators for the two pitchers are going in opposite directions, and with Mulder's health an open question, and his brutal second half fresh in memory, it's not hard for me to see Haren being more productive next year. He had better peripherals than Mulder, albeit in many fewer innings, he has fewer health questions and a strong skill set. The Cardinals paid the price for the name, and for the label of "#1 starter." A year ago, I wrote that the A's should have traded Barry Zito instead of Ted Lilly because the key in trading is to swap a player whose perceived value is greater than their actual value. That's exactly what they've done here; Mulder has win totals and innings and a reputation and a contract, but the gap between that and what he's actually worth right now is fairly large.

This is an open forum for David Glass, owner of the Royals, because he honestly does not seem to understand. Today, Kansas City is crying. In sadness. In anger. In frustration. Today, there are lifelong Royals fans promising that they will never care again. There are adults who grew up on Frank White and Fred White and Ken Wright who are now stuffing their Royals hats in dresser drawers. There are baseball hearts broken all over the Midwest. "I have made a major decision to leave major-league baseball as a fan," Dave Keller writes. "I am ready to throw in the towel," Richard Jost writes. "My love for the Royals," writes Kary Booher, "died today." David Glass is clearly befuddled by all this. The Royals traded Jermaine Dye on Wednesday for shortstop Neifi Perez. In Glass' mind, the deal makes perfect sense. Dye won a Gold Glove last year. Perez won a Gold Glove. What's the big deal? Like swapping baseball cards. "We are not dismantling this team," Glass says clearly.

Oakland answered any doubts as to whether it would hold 'em or fold 'em on Wednesday when it picked up outfielder Jermaine Dye from the Royals in a three-team trade. Kansas City received shortstop Neifi Perez from the Rockies, who got minor leaguers Jose Ortiz, Mario Encarnacion and Todd Belitz from the A's. Dye, 27, can't be a free agent this year like his new teammates Johnny Damon, Jason Giambi and Jason Isringhausen, but he'll command a lot of money in arbitration. He had strong seasons in 1999 (.294-27-119) and 2000 (.321-33-118) but hasn't been as potent this year, hitting .272-13-47 in 97 games. Dye adds some righthanded pop to a very lefthanded lineup. He'll take over in right field, with Terrence Long likely moving over to left and ending a revolving door of players at that position. Dye also offers one of the better right-field arms in the game.
