White Sox outfielder sidelined when bites become infected
CHICAGO - Chicago White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye was out of the lineup for a fourth straight game Sunday as he recovered from bug bites to his left leg that became infected. "It's just a weird injury. Not really an injury but just a weird situation," Dye said Sunday before a game against the Boston Red Sox. "Being bit by a spider five times and having it turn out to be something that's pretty serious, you worry about it a little bit. That's why I went to the hospital and got IVs and all the antibiotics in me, so it wouldn't spread too much and become real dangerous." Dye said he apparently was bitten in his bed at a hotel in Cleveland, where the White Sox played four games right after the All-Star break. "When it first happened it just looked like little bites, so I just kept playing or whatever and all the sudden it just kept getting bigger and bigger," Dye said. "And the lymph nodes and stuff started popping up, so you know that you need to go see a doctor and see what's going on. "Tests haven't come back yet on what it really was - doctors said it was just a poisonous spider or something. Once you find out that it can become dangerous if it spreads and gets into your system, you start to worry."

BALTIMORE - Before he threw his first pitch of the game, Freddy Garcia had enough run support to end his victory drought against the Baltimore Orioles. Jermaine Dye and Joe Crede had two RBIs apiece in a five-run first inning, helping Garcia earn his first win against Baltimore in three years and start the Chicago White Sox on their way to a 9-4 rout Sunday night. After building an 8-1 lead in the second inning, the White Sox had little difficulty dispatching the free-falling Orioles, who have lost 11 of 12 to dip two games under .500 (51-53) for the first time this season. "You have to stay positive," Baltimore manager Lee Mazzilli said. "This too shall pass." Garcia (11-4) gave up three earned runs and 10 hits in seven innings. The right-hander is 9-1 on the road, and 8-1 overall since losing at home to the Orioles on May 14.

Jermaine Dye
From Wiki Gonzalez, the Baseball Think Factory encyclopedia. Jermaine Dye is a veteran major league outfielder for the White Sox and some other teams before that. Dye came up as a decent-hitting, low-walking prospect in the Braves system, starting in Atlanta for a year before being traded to the Royals in 1997. After an adjustment period, Dye unexpectedly became a quality hitter for both average and power, and even developed some patience at the plate. Dye was part of the greatest moment and worst moment in Billy Beane 's tenure with the Athletics . Beane stole him from KC in 2001 to shore up a shaky outfield and lock in a postseason berth, then exuberantly signed him to a fat 3-year extension after the season. At the time this was generally considered uncharacteristic of Beane's own team-building philosophy. The worst-case scenario happened: crippling injuries and poor-to-average performance made Dye vastly overpaid. Beane was unable to trade him, and had to let him consume much of the team's payroll budget. Dye joined the ChiSox in 2005 on a 2-year contract at a much reduced salary. As he recovered his swing, Primates in

When Jermaine Dye went down yesterday with spider bites it sounded familiar. A little Googling led me Eric Young, who missed much of a week (6 days) in June 2004 after a couple of spider bites on his knee got infected. It looks like Dye's infection was worse, but it's impossible to say if his rehab will be similar or not. posted by Rotoman at Saturday, July 23, 2005

On Being A Baseball Fan Reviews of Baseball Books Opening Day: Part Two The Game Kudos to whoever wrote the script for today's Opening Day show, because it couldn't have been better. If I were a theater critic, I'd say it had equal parts poignancy, laughter, drama, action, and a bang of an ending! It was the first time I'd ever been to Opening Day, and I must say it was well worth taking off from work and driving 500 miles round trip within 24 hours. Even if it was gray, and way too cold for baseball, it was not a day to miss. It really is a holiday for Yankees fans, a day when we can just be fans, and exult in just what fanatics we are. There was much pomp and circumstance, and I got a lump in my throat watching the Championship flag being raised, so it would have been a special day no matter what. But the Yankees also came through on the field, with a great game, and a little history, as well. Things kicked off with Roger Clemens throwing his first pitch for a strike. That pattern didn't hold up throughout the day, though, as he was constantly behind batters in the count. It didn't look to us like he had his best stuff. In the first KC Royal Carlos Febles led off with a comebacker at Clemens, who threw to first for the out. Then came Carlos Beltran, and as the Section 39 faithful, the Bleacher Creatures (and everyone around them) joined in the roll call, Beltran blooped a high pop into short left center. Knobby ran in, Luis Sojo ran out, Bernie ran in... really, it should have been Sojo's. Sojo, starting at short because Derek Jeter is still in Tampa rehabbing his strained quad muscle, is a good fielder. But when he couldn't snag the ball as it rocketed down just out of his reach, you know what went through many people minds was: Jeter makes that play...

by Vince Galloro regressing to the mean The latest report on the White Sox in the Triple Play feature from Baseball Prospectus seems to think that the only regression for the Sox will be Jon Garland's from his current lofty heights. Not that I disagree that his performance will moderate as the season wears on, but the same Triple Play report on the Sox also notes Jermaine Dye's terrible start, but there's no suggestion that Dye will regress to his mean performance. The website's PECOTA projection system made a median projection for Dye before the season of .256/.330/.450 nothing spectacular for a right fielder, but a lot better than the terrible start that Dye is off to. Paul Konerko is also off to a very bad start overall, despite the 7 home runs that he hit in the season's first few weeks. Should we expect Konerko to hit .190/.302/.430 for the whole season? How about Dye's .202/.237/.360? How about Aaron Rowand's .235/.303/.347? Even if none of these three hitters finishes with great numbers at the end of the season, they are likely to improve on where they stand now.
