101. Baseball Musings: 3 (Million) Martinez Lunch

Main November 04, 2003 3 (Million) Martinez Lunch Edgar Martinez signed a one-year deal to stay with the Seattle Mariners today. He'll earn a minimum of three million dollars. The two-time AL batting champion had a $4 million base salary this year and earned $3.5 million in performance bonuses. He faced a Sunday deadline to file for free agency. But Martinez wants to finish his career with the Mariners, the only organization he's played for. "I'm very glad everything worked out and I'm coming back for another year," he said. "I think if we didn't reach an agreement, the chances that I'd stay home were a lot greater than I'd play for another team." I used to hear a lot about how players don't stay with one team anymore, but it seems a lot of recent stars had their careers in one city. Here's the list of all players who played at least 12 seasons and played for only one major league franchise: The number of players with one team did go down from the 1970's to the 1980's, and you have to figure in a couple of expansions. But it's not as bad as some people would have you believe. And it looks like Edgar Martinez will be another on the retired part of this list eventually. 3K Ks. Maddux bound for HOF?
posted by to Baseball at 10:29 PM CST (61 comments total) No doubt he's a first-rounder, IMO. Just check his career stats : over 300 wins, better than 3000 Ks (as of tonight) and a career ERA right at 3.00. Add 14 Gold Gloves (13 straight) and 4 straight Cy Youngs, what doubt is there? He's been consistently fantastic, and is probably the single best placement pitcher I've seen in my lifetime. Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine are at the forefront of the best pitching trios of all time.
Seriously, is there any question?
And I ask this as an armchair at best Mets fan that has continually been stymied by the Braves dominance of the NL East for, essentially, half of my lifetime.
posted by Ufez Jones at 10:47 PM CST on July 26 I think Maddux is a borderline case. If he could just somehow stick around long enough to get a few more wins, he might make the Hall. Ultimately he will lose votes though because of him showing up in the media a few too many times during his career for the wrong reasons.
