THE WAY JEFF TORBORG SEES things, baseball is in the midst of a Golden Age, the likes of which it hasn't seen since Babe Ruth's hey-day or the emergence of young black stars following Jackie Robinson's breaking of the color barrier. A person might wonder about Torborg's enthusiasm, considering he managed a last-place Expos team last season, a club that averaged a little more than 7,600 fans per game and was one of the franchises being considered for contraction. But it was Torborg's deep-rooted love of baseball and optimism for its future that enabled him to accept such a challenge in the first place. A New Jersey native, he grew up a New York Giants fan, played for the Dodgers, managed the Mets and was a Yankees coach for nearly a decade.

BAD TO THE BONE
DON DRYSDALE
Dodger right-hander Don Drysdale combined a great arm with an ability to intimidate batters. Not only did the sidearming hurler knock down opposing batters, but he also plunked them with regularity. He led the National League in hit batsmen each year from 1958 through 1961. He also holds the NL career mark at 154. Frank Robinson once said, "He was mean enough to do it, and he did it continuously. You could count on him doing it. And when he did it, he just stood there on the mound and glared at you to let you know he meant it." Drysdale had learned from a master of aggressive pitching, Sal "the Barber" Maglie, who had learned how to pitch aggressively from former Giant great Adopho Luque. Convinced of the value of keeping hitters off balance, Drysdale hung around the veteran Maglie in Brooklyn when he was just starting. "What being around Maglie did for me," Drysdale explained, "was to confirm this idea in my mind and refine it. It was part of the game. I watched Maglie, I listened to Maglie, and it all sunk in. It just sort of clicked." Drysdale has his own code of pitching ethics. "My own little rule was two for one. If one of my teammates got knocked down, then I knocked down two on the other team." Drysdale showed so much promise that the Dodgers signed him right out of high school in 1954. Drysdale was 5-5 in 99 innings in 1956 and moved into the rotation the next season, going 17-9 in the Dodgers' last year in Brooklyn. In 1959 he led the NL in strikeouts, and repeated in 1960 and 1962. He he averaged 315 innings a season from 1962 through 1965.

To hear four old-timers talk, baseball's lost a step or two
May 11, 2005 For 90 minutes, we were transported to the 1950s.
K.C. ALFRED / Union-Tribune Buzzie Bavasi (left) and Jerry Coleman share a laugh beneath a portrait of Ted Williams at the San Diego Hall of Champions, where they came for yesterday's Sports at Lunch.
But, miraculously, Coleman only called Snider "Dick" once. "I hate being around these old goats," Coleman began. "I remember Duke when he could run. Buzzie saved my life hiring me as Padres broadcaster." Bavasi whispered to Snider: "It was a mistake." "Duke and Mantle were great players, but I always felt Duke was the better player," Bavasi said. "I enjoy all the talk about steroids, all the home runs McGwire, Sosa and Bonds hit. How many home runs do you think Barry Bonds would hit off Sandy Koufax? Bonds was intentionally walked 100 times? Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale never would waste four pitches when one would do the job." Garcia jumped in: "Baseball players didn't like to punch the clock back then. They loved to play, and I don't really see that today. I'm not so sure too many of them even like to play, and that's kind of sad."

TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM
For the past 18 years, Don Baylor was baseball's No. 1 hit man. Nobody in the history of baseball was hit more frequently than Baylor. When he finished playing, Baylor had been hit been hit by fastballs, curveballs, sliders, knucklers, change-ups, slurves, screwballs, and anything else a pitcher would throw, 267 times. Baylor broke Ron Hunt’s record of 243 HBPs in 1987. Baylor and Hunt were totally different types of players. Hunt was dirty. Not a “dirty” player in the sense that he slid spikes high or anything like that, he just would get dirty sliding, diving for a ground ball from his second base position, or doing whatever it took to help his team…like getting hit with a pitch (he led the league in the category for seven consecutive seasons). Baylor on the other hand, was a more complete ballplayer hitting 338 homers and stealing 285 bases. He’s in that group of players like Gil Hodges, and Ron Santo who will be regarded as just short of being a Hall of Famer. Baylor was proud of his HBP record as well he should be. He played in an era when pitchers wanted to own the inside of the plate and weren’t afraid to have to show the batter that that area was there domain. "It was like a badge of honor to have that record," Baylor said Friday. "For me, the only armor I had was the batting helmet. You hear people say, 'Take one for the team.' I did it when it really meant something."
