Main December 22, 2004 Join Dodgers, Drew MLB.com is reporting that the Dodgers have reached an agreement with J.D. Drew Drew was the ultimate prize the Dodgers were pursuing with the money that would have been freed by the aborted trade, which would have moved Shawn Green, Brad Penny, Kazuhisa Ishii and Yhency Brazoban off the payroll. Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta was so far along with the Drew negotiations he apparently felt the club could handle that acquisition and still fill the two remaining holes in the starting rotation. Drew brings the ability to get on base and good power to the Dodgers. He has a career .391 OBA and a .513 slugging percentage. He's also a good base stealer to boot, swiping at a 76.3% clip for his career. Drew's main problem has been injuries. He'll take the field as a 29 year-old in 2005, but he's never played 150 games in a season. His 145 games in 2004 was a career high, and before that J.D. had never played more than 135 games. I now have some pictures to show, which should clear things up. Comparing pitchers directly is very difficult. Numbers like wins and losses are very easily shown to have little intrinsic value, since they are strongly dependent on how a pitcher's team performs. Earned Run Average is more useful, but favors pitchers with short, excellent careers, and also varies somewhat year to year, most notably in the 1960s when pitchers became so dominant that the height of pitchers' mounds was dropped from 15" to 10" to restore balance. For my comparison I used one of the newfangled nerd stats, WARP-3. It measures how many wins a particular player is responsible for based on their performance, compared to a hypothetical "replacement-level" player, taking into consideration the quality of opponents and the bias of the home and away parks , balanced over all seasons since 1890 including adjustments for different season lengths , and quite possibly incorporating the phases of the moon and ladies' skirt lengths.

Among the top of the rookies ready to shine are the Cardinal's OF J.D. Drew. J.D. is simply the best prospect in baseball. Drew is naturally talented with quick feet, an even quicker bat, and a storng arm. In his brief September call-up with the Redbirds he hit .417 with 5 homers and 13 runs batted in in only 14 games. Expect Drew to be the NL Rookie of the Year. With all the attention focused on Drew, everybody seemed to forget about Jose Jimenez. Jimenez was the Texas League Pitcher of the Year after going 15-6 with a 3.11 ERA. He should be able to grab a spot in the Cardinals mixed-up rotation. Among the other top prospects are OF Alex Ramirez of Cleveland. The Indians have so much confidence in Ramirez they traded away OF Brain Giles for pitching help. Alex hit .299 with 34 homeruns and 103 RBIs in Triple-A Buffalo. OF Gabe Kapler, along with C Robert Fick, should add some talent to the untalented Tigers. Kaplar was the USA Today Minor League Player of the year after hitting .322 with 28 homeruns and a Double-A Southern League record of 146 RBIs. Kaplar has proved he's ready for Tiger Stadium. Fick hit .318 with 18 homers and 114 RBIs in Double-A Jacksonville. On most teams, Fick would spend another year in the minors, but look for him to be called up about halfway through the season for Detroit.

But Drew, second in the batting order for his Tennessee Smokies Tuesday night, has shown little rust after nearly a year between the end of his college days at Florida State and beginning of his professional career with Arizona. Before being promoted from Class A to Class AA Monday, Drew paced the California League with a .389 batting average, homering 10 times and driving in 39 runs in just 38 games.
