Unwrapping the Present...J. D. Drew by Mark Bausch posted September 23, 1999 Watching the development of a major league baseball player is a bit like unwrapping a present... "Keep your eye on the ball." From T-ball through the big leagues...ballplayers from around the globe hear that mantra over and over again: "Keep your eye on the ball". Major league baseball players seldom take their eye off the ball...not even for a second. Another baseball truism? "You can always run hard to first base." Most, but not all, major leaguers, follow that dictum as well. Which is why a pair of late-season situations that involved Cardinals rookie center fielder J. D. Drew were so surprising. After all, Drew possesses all of the tools...and "looks like a ballplayer" as well. Rewind to late-August. Here's what happened. With a runner on second base, Cardinals pitcher Darren Oliver induced a batter to hit a can-of-corn fly ball to just to the right field side of straightaway center field. J. D. Drew, playing center field, moved smartly to his left, and in a bit, to easily make the catch. The runner on second base played it half-way, and then raced back to the bag as Drew caught the ball.

Physics of Baseball
J.D. Drew's homer
Background: J.D. Drew hit a monster home run during the 1997 season, but it hit a tree in flight (while still 85' off the ground) so the length of the homer could not be determined. After reading an article in the newspaper (2/04/1997 Tallahassee Democrat) about this problem, including some estimates by the coaches and a request for some help ( "Now there's a science problem for you," FSU coach Mike Martin said. "We ought to get one of our science professors over to calculate how far that might have gone." ), I stopped by practice to find out more and see if I could help. The two letters to Coach Martin included below were the result. The first letter gives relevant data obtained from a conversation with the coach and a first estimate, while the second letter gives a summary of my numerical findings. The numerical model in my program is based on the equations and tabulated drag coefficients in ``The Physics of Baseball'' by Robert K. Adair.

Baseball Fever National League St. Louis Cardinals PDA View Full Version : Any hope For J.D matt morris 03-20-2003, 10:58 AM Is there any hope for this guy His persistant injuries make him a liability on our team!! Can he ever get back to full health and start producing the no.s we know he can? The Commissioner 03-20-2003, 07:35 PM Back to full health? Has he ever been in full health since college? I was thinking his career was just going to take off after the season he had in 2001. Now it's looking more nad more unlikely that he'll ever live up to his potential. matt morris 03-21-2003, 09:13 AM there is baggage that is in serious need of off loading and Drew is on the top of my list!!!! Stan The Man 05-09-2003, 01:11 PM JD will be traded for pitching, very soon. matt morris 05-09-2003, 11:27 PM he got a single hr shot in the 8th last night, which kinda impressed me!!! Baseball Fever National League St. Louis Cardinals PDA View Full Version : Jd Drew Rumors..... 12-12-2003, 06:51 PM Rumor #1 Drew to Yankees for Jon Lieber
Rumor #2 Drew to Braves for Jason Marquis
Rumor #3 Drew to Angels for Jarrod Wasburn
Rumor #4 Drew to Dodgers for Jeff Weaver
All of these have been floating around lately the Yankees is the most unlikely but the other 3 and they all have minor players involved seem like good bets..or there could be a 3-Way involving Atlanta and LA or Atlanta and Anaheim
Either way it seems like JD may be elsewhere by Jan. 01
Thoughts? 12-12-2003, 07:19 PM I think the most probable is rumor 4. Considering its the most talked about, with rumor 3. 12-13-2003, 05:55 AM I'm hearing #2 is a serious possibility. MLB.com reported the Braves do have an offer of RHP Jason Marquis and LHP Ray King on the table for Drew.
Honestly, I've always felt Drew was an underachiever who gets hurt too much so I'm surprised the Braves would not only pay him $5 million, but would give up two Major League-ready pitchers to get him. They also are interested in Jacque Jones and Juan Encarnacion so Drew may still end up in LA after the Brown deal is done. 12-13-2003, 07:21 AM

Another Great Baseball Life story,
by "KC" Casey Baron #24 (age 12), of Fairland, Maryland,
My Dad wanted to take me to watch this ballplayer from Florida State one day over at the University of Maryland. From time to time, Associate Head Coach Kelly Kulina allowed me to be the bat boy during the games when the older boys played. Coach Kulina's son's name is lil' Kell. Kell played on the team my Dad coached one year. Kell still remembers the trophy he got from my Dad for being named the MVKG (for Most Valuable Kindergarten). Kell's Mom just stopped by to return the video tape she borrowed. (SlamJam (w/Michael Jordan). Anyway I called Kell on the telephone to ask about being a ball boy at tonight’s game. Kell's Dad said it was O.K.
Mr. Purdue, Earl Palmer Brown and Coach Kulina radley about getting lights for the field, named Shipley Field. (KC goes to school with Mr. Brown's grandchildren, Mr Gieger's children live next door, and Mr. Kirk catches my Dad when they play baseball.)

Fantasy Baseball Player News
JD Drew (OF), LA - FA Signing December 22, 2004 News: According to the Bergen Record , JD Drew has agreed to a 5-yr, $55 million deal with the Dodgers, pending a physical examination. Views: Drew had the best season of his career and healthiest as well last year for the Braves. He hit .305/.436/.569 with 31 homers, 93 RBI and 12 steals. Drew's contract is eerily the same dollar amount and contract length of another injury plagued player Darren Dreifort. If Drew is healthy, he has one of the best swings in the game, however he's topped 135 games in a season just once in his 6 year career. The move to Dodger Stadium will negatively affect his fantasy value as it will likely hurt his home run total as well as his runs and RBI with a weak lineup around him.

40. May 1998 Boston Baseball: J.D. Drew, Scott Boras And The Amateur Draft
The amateur draft was that baseball rarity, a successful, legal way to reduce salaries. This year Boras represented Florida State outfielder jd drew.
http://roadsidephotos.sabr.org/baseball/bb98-3.htm
J.D. Drew, Scott Boras and the Amateur Draft
The owners instituted the amateur draft in 1965 to keep themselves from bidding up the value of top prospects. While the reserve clause bound players to their organization for life upon signing their first contract, amateur players remained free to sign with whichever club offered the most money. This freedom allowed untested 18-year-olds to sign for more up-front cash than a veteran could earn in ten years. But after Rick Reichardt used his bargaining leverage to extract a $205,000 signing bonus from the California Angels in 1964, MLB decided to eradicate this sliver of free market.
At the time no one knew what a player like Varitek would be worth in the open market. That would soon change, thanks to a series of mind-boggling blunders by club executives. Major league rules require teams to tender contracts to their draft picks within 15 days after selecting them, but in 1996, only one team met this deadline. As a result, four of the top 12 picks sought and won free agency. #2 pick Travis Lee soon signed a four-year, $10 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, a deal worth $7.5 million more than #1 pick Kris Benson received from Pittsburgh. Now everyone knew the stakes.
