Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?

When I was nine years old the N.Y. Mets won the World Series. That was the day I became a baseball fan. I remember riding my banana seat bike around the neighborhood, with each press of the pedal, the thought that my team won the 1969 World Series spun through my mind. It seemed unreal, like a dream. Something magical happened to me that day. Before that day, I was forced to watch the Mets instead of my favorite cartoons however, that day my Dad's team became my team. I fell in love with the Mets. That day I fell in love with baseball.
I began collecting baseball cards. Not just any cards would do, I had to have "The Mets." I will never forget the day in elementary school when I got in trouble for having my cards out after recess. I was in the middle of the biggest trade of my life, Roy White (Yankees) for a Donn Clendenon (Mets). I just had to have that card.
Before I could complete the deal, my teacher confiscated my cards. I was crushed! That afternoon I hung in the back of the lunch line and when the opportunity was right I quickly ran to my teacher's desk. I found my cards and took 'em back. They were in good condition (not gem mint). That didn't matter. The trouble I got in that day was well worth my criminal act. The only thing that mattered to me was that I got my cards back. I still have all those cards.

MAYOR GIULIANI RENAMES THE WEST SIDE HIGHWAY IN HONOR OF YANKEE LEGEND JOE DiMAGGIO
"From Battery Park Place To West 72nd Street, West Side Highway Now to Be Known as "Joe DiMaggio Highway"
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to honor Yankee Legend Joe "Joltin' Joe" DiMaggio and to rename the West Side Highway Joe DiMaggio Highway. Adorned with crossed bats and baseballs, the new green and white signs will be posted on the southbound side of the West Side Highway at 70th Street and on the northbound side at West Street between Morris and Thames near the Brooklyn Battery Park Tunnel. Also joining the Mayor at today's ceremony were the baseball great's granddaughters Paula Hamra and Kathie Stein, and State Assembly Leader Sheldon Silver and State Senator Serphin Maltese, both of whom sponsored the legislation renaming the highway. "Joe DiMaggio was the greatest living baseball player and represented the very best of American sports," Mayor Giuliani said. "He was the personification of Yankee pride and has proven to be an enduring symbol of grace and greatness in baseball. He led the Yankees to 9 World Series and set records, which may never be broken. He was a gentleman on and off the field. As long as our national pastime is played, Joe DiMaggio will exemplify the spirit of the game.

DiMaggio was considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time as well as a man who was loved by all. Find out this man's life story by reading this informative article!
Joseph Paul DiMaggio was born on November 25, 1914, in Martine, California, a fishing town north of San Francisco. Joseph was the eighth of nine children. His father was a fisherman, and assumed that all five of his sons would follow him into the fishing business. Fortunately, for the world of baseball and for America, that did not happen. In 1930, when young Joe was sixteen years old he dropped out of high school and got a job at a local bottling plant. Joe didn't like the work, so he moved on to become a dockworker. In 1932, Vince DiMaggio, Joe’s older brother, got his chance to play minor league baseball on the Pacific Coast League. The team needed a shortstop later in the season, and Vince suggested his younger brother. The following year, at the age of seventeen, the right-handed batter played professional baseball with the Seals. Within that year, he hit twenty-eight home runs, brought in 169 home runs, and had a sixty-one game hitting streak. In 1934, the Seals owner, Charlie Graham, sold Joe to the Yankees with twenty-five thousand dollars and five players. Graham knew a good thing when he saw it, though, and included a stipulation into the deal, Joe DiMaggio would spend the next season playing for him again.
