Baseball legend DiMaggio dies

Joe DiMaggio - an icon of American sport
Brian Barron looks back at Joe DiMaggio's life
Joe DiMaggio, one of the most famous figures in American sporting history, has died at the age of 84. The ex-New York Yankees baseball star and former husband of Marilyn Monroe had been suffering from lung cancer. The news was announced by DiMaggio's lawyer and friend for 59 years, Morris Engelberg, who had joined family and friends at the sporting legend's bedside at his home in Florida. "DiMaggio, the consummate gentleman on and off the field, fought his illness as hard as he played the game of baseball and with the same dignity, style and grace with which he lived his life," Engelberg said. He underwent surgery for lung cancer last October but suffered further complications and struggled to recover. DiMaggio was released from Florida's Memorial Regional Hospital last month after a 99-day stay that had been remarkable for the extent of press and TV coverage of his condition. He will be buried in San Francisco.

JOE DIMAGGIO Baseball Player Joe DiMaggio was one of the most gifted batters in professional baseball's history, a center fielder best known for his streak of safely batting in 56 consecutive games in 1941. Known also as "The Yankee Clipper," DiMaggio's quiet demeanor and extraordinary talent made him an American hero. He played all of his 13 seasons for the New York Yankees, retiring in 1951. In 1954 he was briefly married to actress Marilyn Monroe , and in the 1970's and '80s he was a television pitchman for Mr. Coffee automatic coffeemakers.
Extra credit : DiMaggio's baseball career was interrupted for three years while he served in the armed forces during World War II... DiMaggio was the subject of the 2000 biography A Hero's Life by Richard Ben Cramer... The phrase "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" comes from the Simon and Garfunkel song "Mrs. Robinson"... http://www.allsports.com/mlb/yankees/frommer25.htm
Special to BTB From Author Harvey Frommer Albert Pujols, Meet Joe DiMaggio! By Harvey Frommer A member of the Society for American Baseball Research
It is not quite the same, but the St. Louis Cardinals 23-year-old Albert Pujols (as of this writing) has hit in 30 straight games and counting.
Only 26 more to catch Joe DiMaggio's all-time record. But 2003 is not 1941.
It was truly remarkable a hit every game for two months, from May 15 through July 17, 1941 in Yankee wins and defeats, in games played in the daytime and those played at night. Single games, doubleheaders, meaningless games and ones that really counted Joe DiMaggio was locked in for 56 straight. And what made the epic feat even more dramatic was that it took place in the summer of '41, a time America was locked into news of the triumphs and tragedies of World War II.
The Yankee Clipper started the 1941 season slumping. He managed a single in four at bats on May 15 against Edgar Smith in a game the Yankees lost to the White Sox, 3-1.
On May 24 in his final at bat of the game against the Red Sox, DiMaggio singled in two runs. He had a modest ten game hitting streak, but hardly anyone paid it any attention. On May 30th the Yankee centerfielder made three errors in the second game of a double header. He was pressing. In the fifth inning, his fly ball to right was lost in the sun by Boston outfielder Pete Fox. DiMag, credited with a hit, had pushed the streak to 16.

JOE DIMAGGIO: The Hero's Life
Richard Ben Cramer

Simon and Schuster
Biography
ISBN: 0684853914
Regardless of what Richard Ben Cramer thinks, he has thrown another curve into the realm of hero-worship. Perhaps we have Jim Bouton, Yankee alumnus and author of the classic BALL FOUR, to thank for this; perhaps someone else would have come along to show us that the emperor Joe DiMaggio's clothes were less than pristine. But JOE DIMAGGIO: The Hero's Life, this long-anticipated biography of the Yankee Clipper, could not, would not have been written 30 years ago. And even now, in this "enlightened" era, many readers might find this book a cruel intrusion into that place set aside for their cherished beliefs.
DiMaggio's talents on the field are never an issue. His career statistics include a batting average of .325, 361 home runs (against 369 strikeouts) and 1,537 RBIs. Joltin' Joe was the bridge between the days of Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle. He led the Yankees to championship after championship, appearing on 10 pennant winners during his 13 years. His hitting streak of 56 games is one of the records least likely to be broken. During his reign as baseball's best, he exuded a pastiche of class and elegance. Life magazine, in what they must have considered forward thinking at the time, featured him in an article proclaiming that he didn't smell of garlic or talk with an accent - a true American!

Hulton Deutsch/Allsport Joltin' Joe has left and gone away. Joe DiMaggio died on March 8, 1999 at the age of 84 following complications from lung cancer. But his memory remains, indelibly etched in the hearts and minds of generations of fans who watched as the Yankee Clipper achieved success and confronted fame with the same grace he showed as one of the greatest center fielders to ever play the game. Friends and former ballfield foes came forward to praise DiMaggio. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said DiMaggio, as the son of an immigrant, "represented the hopes and ideals of our great countryÉ. There was an aura about him that was amazing. I idolized him." CNN/SI Former Red Sox slugger Ted Williams said there was no one he "admired, respected and envied more" than DiMaggio.

DiMaggio an American hero By Bob Kimball, USATODAY.com American icon Joe DiMaggio, who patrolled center field with grace and precision and won pennant after pennant with the New York Yankees, died Monday at his home in Hollywood, Fla.. The Yankee Clipper was 84 and had undergone surgery for lung cancer in October before developing pneumonia. A private funeral is scheduled for Thursday in the Hall of Famer's hometown of San Francisco. DiMaggio's impact on the Yankees, sports and American culture was dramatic following his arrival in New York in 1936. The Hall of Famer starred on four World Series winners in his first four major league seasons and wound up leading the Yankees to 10 American League titles and nine Series championships in 13 years. He became forever linked with consistent greatness in 1941 when he hit safely in 56 consecutive games, a record that most baseball observers believe is safe for all time.
