Joe DiMaggio

Born: November 25, 1914 He is a modern day American icon. An athlete with grace both on and off the field. He is one of the most popular men to ever play America's favorite pastime Joe DiMaggio. Joseph Paul DiMaggio was born in Martine, California on November 25, 1914. His two brothers, Dominic and Vincent, also played major league baseball. DiMaggio's baseball career began in 1932 with the Pacific Coast League. He played in San Francisco until 1936, when he was signed by the New York Yankees. He remained there until he retired in 1951. Mr. DiMaggio served the Yankees as one of the best outfielders ever to play the game. Nicknamed the "Yankee Clipper" for his superb fielding ability, DiMaggio also was a great offensive player as well. He set a major league record by establishing a 56 game hitting streak in 1941, which helped earn him the nickname "Joltin' Joe".

for Joltin' Joe!" That newspaper headline inspired the lively SOUNDPRINT documentary program Waiting for Joe DiMaggio, which aired in December, 1995. The program tells the story of Isola Delle Femmine, a poor fishing village near Palermo, where Joe DiMaggio's father lived and worked until he emigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. In 1993, the National Italian American Foundation announced a tour of Italy, with baseball hero Joe DiMaggio as one of their emissaries. The several thousand citizens of Isola Delle Femmine spent the village's entire annual budget to prepare for DiMaggio's scheduled visit. They organized a massive feast, decorated the streets with Italian and American flags, and built a commemorative stone piazza over the water where DiMaggio's father used to fish. "The townspeople," say Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, producers of Waiting for Joe DiMaggio, "had even gone without baths or pasta, as the village water supply was diverted to clean up the streets."

All this dignity that he carried himself with was really about his own worship and adoration for what Joe DiMaggio meant to other people says New York Times columnist Robert Lipsyte on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury show on the Yankee Clipper. Joe DiMaggio hit over .300 11 times and won two batting titles. Joe DiMaggio was more than the most complete all-around player of his generation. He was more than the player who set one of the game's most cherished records, hitting safely in 56 consecutive games. Baseball has produced many icons, but it has produced only one Joe DiMaggio. He has proved to be the most enduring symbol of baseball greatness. In the almost half a century from his retirement until his death on March 8, 1999, he retained his image as America's ultimate hero. What American male wouldn't sell his soul to the devil to duplicate the exacta that Joltin' Joe accomplished playing centerfield for the Yankees and marrying the sexiest woman on the planet? "Joe DiMaggio is what you get when you build mystique on top of greatness," said Ron Swoboda, the former Met who played a generation after DiMaggio.

Joe DiMaggio: Baseball's Aristocrat
On March 8, 1999, Joe DiMaggio died in his 85th year, a baseball legend, but also an American hero who represented the virtues and ideals of his era. His achievements as a player were extraordinary: a lifetime batting average of .325, with a seasonal high of .381. He had seasonal highs of 167 runs batted in and 46 home runs, with a lifetime total of 361. Twice he led the league in homers, twice in RBIs, and twice again in slugging percentage. But hitting was only part of the story, for DiMaggio was a complete player, a great fielder and a brilliant, if unobtrusive, base runner. No one played a shallower center field, which permitted him to cut off looping singles and short line drives; no one raced back more swiftly, covered more ground, judged more truly, or threw with greater power and accuracy. He had good but not outstanding speed as a base runner. Stealing bases was no part of Yankee strategy; but his judgment and skill on the bases caught the attention of discerning observers. George Will, that connoisseur of the game, notes with admiration that Joe was never thrown out while going from first to third on a base hit. Of all his achievements, however, the one that best accounts for his unique status as an American hero is his feat in 1941 of hitting safely in 56 consecutive games, a record that remains on the books after 57 years. A first step to comprehending the magnitude of this feat is to know that of the thousands of batters who have played in baseball's century of major league play, the closest anyone has come is 44, and only a handful have approached that. DiMaggio's record has never been seriously threatened. For that there are reasons. All record-breakers face mounting pressure as their achievement mounts. But a home-run hitter can go for days, even weeks, without success, knowing that there will be time for a hot streak when the slump is over.

Early Life
The 8th of 9 children, he was born in a two-room house in Martinez, California , east of San Francisco , to poor Sicilian immigrants; delivered by a midwife . His mother, Rosalia, named him "Giuseppe" for his father; "Paolo" was in honor of Saint Paul , his father's favorite saint. The family moved to San Francisco, California when Joe was a year old. Giuseppe was a fisherman, as were generations of DiMaggios before him. It was his dream to have all five of his sons fish the Bay with him. Joe would do anything to get out of cleaning his father's boat, as the smell of dead fish made him sick to his stomach. This earned him Giuseppe's ire, who called him "lazy" and "good for nothing." It was only after he became the sensation of the Pacific Coast League that the old man was finally won over.

Former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda once stated, "If you said to God, 'Create someone who was what a baseball player should be,' God would have created Joe DiMaggio...and he did."
Joseph Paul DiMaggio Jr., was born on November 25, 1914. His Italian immigrant parents raised DiMaggio along with his four brothers and four sisters in North Beach, CA.
He attended elementary and middle school, but a lack of interest caused him to stop going to school when he was only 16. DiMaggio found he also had little interest in working, and began bouncing from job to job. He did various work, from selling newspapers to squeezing oranges. DiMaggio knew that he wanted more out of life than working odd jobs. What he needed was to find his passion in life.
The San Francisco Seals, a minor league baseball team, already had acquired DiMaggio's brother Vincent. Toward the end of the 1932 season, DiMaggio joined his brother and made his professional debut by playing in three games. Playing shortstop he earned just $250 dollars a month. The following season, from May 28 until July 25, DiMaggio achieved a 61-game hitting streak. His first full season with the Seals proved that he had found his calling. With a .340 batting average, 169 RBIs and 28 home runs, he was beginning to be noticed by more than just the locals.

Joe DiMaggio
by Mike Mancuso, April 30, 2001
1941 was a very intriguing year for many Americans. During the summer, baseball stars Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams got the attention of the nation. DiMaggio hit safely in a record 56 straight games, while Ted Williams batted .406. However, America did not know what lay ahead of them. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed while DiMaggio was enjoying a football game at the Polo Grounds. The outbreak of war changed the lives of many Americans, including baseball players. On January 14, 1942, baseball Commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis wrote a query to President Roosevelt questioning the status of the national pastime during the war. Roosevelt responded on January 15 with what has become known as the "green light" letter. Roosevelt wrote, "I honestly feel that it would be best for the country to keep baseball going. There will be fewer people unemployed and everybody will work longer hours and harder than ever before. And that means that they ought to have a chance for recreation and for taking their minds off their work more than before" (2). He also asks for more night games so that it gives opportunities for people on the day shift to see some games. The letter made apparent that players eligible for military duty must serve, but that baseball was essential for recreation for a country at war. On February 17, 1942, Joe DiMaggio enlisted in the Army. Joe had asked that he receive no special treatment as being a national icon. However, Joe would spend most of his time in the Army in the states playing baseball for three years. Most other ballplayers of note did the same, though some did see combat. Most ballplayers served their time on the diamond acting as physical training instructors when not playing. Their purpose on military service teams was to entertain regular troops and the public. However, the players were still subjected to the usual military discipline. Their commanders did not normally care if they were tired and fatigued.

Joe DiMaggio has left a legacy that sets him apart as the classiest player of a peerless group of ballplayers in the history of the New York Yankees. Joe and his brothers Vince and Dom, hailing from the San Francisco area, made up the most famous trio of brothers ever to play baseball in the big leagues. Vince and Dom were effective players, but Joe had a special gift, playing as a Yankee in 10 World Series from 1936 to 1951. Nobody played baseball like Joe DiMaggio. As an 18-year-old player for the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League, he managed to get at least one hit in an astounding 61 consecutive games.
