Joe DiMaggio was one of the most gifted batters in professional baseball's history, a center fielder best known for his streak of safely batting in 56 consecutive games in 1941. Known also as "The Yankee Clipper," DiMaggio's quiet demeanor and extraordinary talent made him an American hero. He played all of his 13 seasons for the New York Yankees, retiring in 1951. In 1954 he was briefly married to actress Marilyn Monroe , and in the 1970's and '80s he was a television pitchman for Mr. Coffee automatic coffeemakers. DiMaggio's baseball career was interrupted for three years while he served in the armed forces during World War II... 56 Game Hitting Steak by Joe DiMaggio
On May 15, 1941, it began. On that day, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio went one-for-four with a run batted in against Eddie Smith and the Chicago White Sox. From that fateful day until July 16, fifty-six games later, DiMaggio hit safely in every game, setting a brand new record that still stands as one of the greatest achievements in baseball history. "The Streak", as it has come to be known added to the legend of the great DiMaggio. The eleven-time All-Star was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1955. In fact, the first line of his Cooperstown plaque pays homage to his 1941 streak. DiMaggio is one of only a few players whose famous record still stands, as even Hall of Fame worthy Pete Rose (hit in forty-four consecutive games in 1978) and Hall of Famer Paul Molitor (thirty-nine games in 1987) have fallen far short of his record. Baseball Almanac proudly presents a game-by-game record of the unbreakable, the amazing, the record setting, The Streak.

Stan Musial said of him: "There was never a day when I was as good as Joe DiMaggio at his best. Joe was the best, the very best I ever saw." DiMaggio became an American hero at a time when Americans had little to feel heroic about. He was an American idol when America struggled with idealism. This wonderful ballplayer exhibited grace and class in a game that less than two decades prior had been blemished by a gambling scandal. DiMaggio attracted attention years after his retirement not just for his exploits on the diamond, but for his extraordinary traits as an American.

When baseball mattered the most, no one mattered as much as Joe DiMaggio By Dave Kindred
The Sporting News The death of the Yankee Clipper is a jolt to a nation that reveled in his talent, his grace and his majestic presence
To say aloud the man's name ... Joe DiMaggio ... is to see the world as it was, to see it in black and white, to see a strong man hidden in an old baseball uniform, so much flannel there it's flapping, NEW YORK across the grays, the entwined NY on the pinstriped whites. Say the name aloud ... Joe DiMaggio ... and you hear in its gliding rhythms the music of a time when baseball mattered the most and when the player who mattered the most was the graceful, stylish, silent son of an Italian immigrant fisherman named Giuseppe DiMaggio. Say the god's name aloud and you know, if you know anything, the truth of what the rapscallion/second baseman Billy Martin said of DiMaggio: "When he walked into the clubhouse, it was like some senator or president walking in there." Only, in DiMaggio's case, presidents invited him to dinner. Time magazine put him on the cover. He married Marilyn Monroe. Willie Mays said he wanted to grow up to be DiMaggio. Ask Pete Rose his age, he says, "Born the year of DiMaggio's streak."

Born: November 25, 1914 Martinez, California Died: March 8, 1999 Hollywood, California Joe DiMaggio was the eighth child out of nine to be born to his parents Giuseppe and Rosalie DiMaggio. They were a Sicilian couple who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the century. Joe DiMaggio threw and batted right and was nicknamed the Yankee Clipper. He had an interesting childhood which consisted of him dropping out of high school in 1930 and taking on many odd jobs while spending every chance he got playing baseball. He bottled orange juice, labored at the docks, worked at a cannery, delivered groceries, and loaded trucks. Finally, in 1933, on a recommendation from his older brother Vince, DiMaggio played his first full season of baseball with the San Francisco Seals, a minor league team from the Pacific Coast League. He had a 61-game hitting streak his first year. The following year, in 1934, the Seals owner sold DiMaggio to the New York Yankees for $25,000 and five players. What followed was a slew of broken records beginning with his rookie year and ending with his retirement.

Career Batting Record Casey Stengel summed up DiMaggio pretty well: "Joe did everything so naturally that half the time he gave the impression he wasn't trying. He had the greatest instincts of any ballplayer I ever saw. He made the rest of them look like plumbers." DiMaggio left high school after one year to work in a fish cannery, then joined the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1933. He hit safely in 61 consecutive games that season, an all-time record for professional baseball. The following year, he suffered a knee injury that made several major league teams lose interest in him. However, the New York Yankees signed him late that year. After one more minor league season, DiMaggio joined the Yankees in 1936 as one of the most highly-touted rookies in history. An ankle injury kept him out of the lineup early on the season. When he finally made his debut on May 3, nearly 25,000 Italian-American fans showed up to wave Italian flags. DiMaggio didn't disappoint anyone, leading the league with 15 triples and batting .323 with 29 home runs and 126 RBI. The Yankees won the first of four consecutive world championships that year. A rightfielder for the first month of his career, DiMaggio moved to centerfield before the season ended and was soon recognized as one of the finest defensive players ever at that position.

Joe DiMaggio by Kevin Fitzpatrick "I'd like to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee." Altercations added May 2002 in RED In American pop culture, there is one 20 th Century icon who stands above all others for crossing over from professional sports to page-one celebrity: Joe DiMaggio. In the decades before 24-hour TV, ESPN or Web sites slavishly devoted to celebritydom, DiMaggio (1914-1999) touched all the bases for going from the sports page to the gossip page. Here are three reasons: He was a Hall of Fame baseball player who holds records that won't ever be broken. His short, stormy marriage to sex bomb Marilyn Monroe. His cult of personality that grew with the 1968 Simon and Garfunkel song Mrs. Robinson, and as pitchman for coffee machines and savings banks. DiMaggio's death March 8, 1999, in his Hollywood, Fla., home was anxiously awaited by newspaper headline writers and TV news producers. DiMaggio's tribute packages were ready to roll because he'd been on death's doorstep for six months. He'd received last rites and had been in a few comas. When he finally checked out of the ICU in January 1999, he and the media all knew it was time to go. DiMaggio occupies a special place in a lot of fan's hearts for a variety of reasons. Once dubbed "the last American hero," and in 1969 voted baseball's greatest living player, the aloof, silent star shunned the spotlight and had a reputation as a recluse. He was mythologized in stories and in song. He was cold to his teammates and warmed up to only his close friends, which included Bud Abbott and Lou Costello.

The son of a fisherman, Joe DiMaggio is considered one of the most memorable baseball players of all time. For many of the fans who saw him play, he epitomizes grace and excellence. His play, his demeanor and his short marriage to Marilyn Monroe helped make him one of the icons of American pop culture.
DiMaggio played for the New York Yankees from 1936 until 1951. Babe Ruth started the tradition of winning, but DiMaggio, with his high standards and leadership, took his New York Yankees team to the World Series ten times, leading them to nine championships.
While America was on the brink of World War II, DiMaggio set a record that gripped the entire nation: he got at least one hit in 56 straight games. That 1941 record captured the attention of ordinary Americans, as fans all over the nation checked their radios and asked each other, "Did he get a hit?" The record is one of the most hallowed achievements in baseball history.
DiMaggio’s skills were much-lauded in his day, and he was voted the American League’s most valuable player three times. Fans and writers called him "Joltin’ Joe" because of his hard hitting. He was also dubbed "the Yankee Clipper" because of his graceful fielding in Yankee Stadium’s vast center field.
His lifetime batting average was .325 and he hit 361 home runs in his career. He also hit 131 triples, 389 doubles, and was involved in 4,529 put-outs in the outfield. In 1954 DiMaggio was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
