Where Have You Gone Joe DiMaggio? "...it's our game; that's the chief fact in connection with it : America's game; has the snap, go, fling, of the American atmosphere; it belongs as much to our own institutions, fits into them as significantly, as our constitution's laws; is just as important in the sum total of our historic life"-Walt Whitman Joltin' Joe DiMaggio the hero that unified America. The Italian immigrant who followed America's golden paved road to greatness, playing America's game in America's most famous city, on America's most storied team, married to America's most beloved movie star.
DEFINING AMERICAN HEROISM The American public, searching for heroes in the decades of Depression and war, found in Joe DiMaggio an ideal image of itself. What is it about DiMaggio that allowed him to transcend his sport and his time to secure his place in American mythology? Why did the American public at the time yearn for such a hero Has America lost the idealism that pervaded Joe DiMaggio's time What kind of heroes do we want today?

TOPPS Baseball Cards
In 1952, Topps came out with the largest baseball card set of the time. There were a total of 407 cards to the set. The set was issued in two series. The first series were numbered 1-310 and the second series were numbered 311-407. ( Series and Prints (Checklist) Developed by Sy Berger , the Topps 1952 set was made up of the first " modern baseball card, " complete with player image, team logo, vital statistics, and a full playing record. The cards measured 2 5/8 in. x 3 3/4 in. and featured colorized black and white photos of the players. Although Berk Ross came out with a 1952 Joe DiMaggio card, Joe had announced his retirement prior to the start of production on the 1952 Topps cards, so he is not included in the 1952 Topps set. Joe DiMaggio Coming Soon "Signs to look for to determine if that 1952 Mantle is an original"
Roy Campanella ( card # 314 ), Pee Wee Reese ( card # 333 ), Hoyt Wilhelm ( card # 392 ), Bill Dickey ( card # 400 ). Because of other contractural obligations, two of the biggest names in baseball are missing from the set, Ted Williams and Stan Musial.

    Washington Post Staff Writer
Web Posted: Monday, March 8, 1999; 9 a.m. EST Joe DiMaggio shows off a set of World Series rings at Yankee Stadium before the last game of the '98 season. The Yankees replaced his set of World Series rings, which were stolen. (AP) Joe DiMaggio, the fabled slugger and centerfielder of the New York Yankees whose superlative play on the baseball field enshrined him in the hearts of sports fans everywhere and made him a universal symbol of athletic grace and excellence, died at his home in Hollywood, Fla., shortly after midnight, said Morris Engelberg, DiMaggio's long-time friend and attorney. The Associated Press reported that his brother Dominick, two grandchildren and Joe Nacchio, his friend for 59 years, and Engelberg were at his side when he died. DiMaggio's body will be flown to Northern California for burial in his home town of San Francisco, Engelberg told the AP. "DiMaggio, the consummate gentleman on and off the field, fought his illness as hard as he played the game of baseball and with the same dignity, style and grace with which he lived his life,'' the AP quoted Engelberg, DiMaggio's next-door neighbor.
