Log in Register Help Bo Diaz Ex Machina Aaron by Mike Carminati Bo Diaz Ex Machina Aaron Haspel over at God Of The Machine posted a response to all the Pete Rose hoopla of late. Both John J Perricone at Only Baseball Matters and your humble servant (that's me) have been responding to Aaron on the issue since. And away we go. Mike:
I agree with a great [deal] of what you argue here. However, I am actually in favor of Rose's reinstatement because I don't feel that MLB made a good case proving Rose bet on baseball or the Reds. I find the evidence to be contradictory and not the least bit compelling. Oh, and I have read the Dowd Report (actually more than once). The evidence is basically enlarged copies of slips of paper that may be in Rose's hand, that were acquired by someone (Paul Janszen) with whom Rose had a falling out, that do not state any figures for baseball games (and therefore, may not be in actuality bets on those games), and that contain erroneous data (the April 9 slip contains three baseball games that never were played on the same day in the 1987 season let alone on April 9). The rest of the evidence is based on Rose's runner Paul Janszen's and his erstwhile bookie Ron Peters' testimony. Peters rarely meets with Rose directly, and bases most of what he says on Janszen. Both of these men had reason to tell Dowd what he wanted to hear (revenge, the authorities, etc.). Janszen actually claims to have paid off Rose's gambling debts himself and to have guaranteed that Rose would be protected from authorities if he be paid a certain amount of money. Dowd takes Janszen's ludicrous statements at face value (isn't it more believable that Janszen was covering his own debt and that he was trying to extort money from Rose for "protection").

DENNIS ECKERSLEY
Eckersley overcame adversity to become one of baseball's greatest relief pitchers. He began his career as a starter, and it wasn't until he was 32 years old and playing for Tony LaRussa that he became a closer. He went on to save 320 games for the Oakland A's in nine seasons, helping the team to four division titles, three pennants, and a World Series title. Despite his late arrival in the bullpen, he retired as the #3 all-time saves leader.

Bo Diaz
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Baudilio Jos© Daz Seijas March 23 November 23 ), best known as Bo Diaz , was a popular baseball catcher in the . He was born in Cºa Miranda Venezuela Defensively, Diaz was strong in every area of the game. He took responsibility for getting the most out of his pitchers, and worked hard at ensuring their success. His pitch-blocking skills were top-notch, and his throws were strong and accurate. A right-handed batter, he was capable of hitting the ball hard to any part of the park with some pop, and he was especially dangerous on the first pitch. Perhaps due to the physical demands of catching and his willingness to play if he's at all able to, he was suffered several injuries during his career. A two-time All-Star , Bo Diaz was a disciplined player in his early years. At fourteen, he played on a national champion Little League team that missed a trip to the Little League World Series when an earthquake devastated Caracas in . Three years later he was signed by Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent. Diaz started his career in the '71

Baseball Fever General Baseball Trivia PDA View Full Version : MLB's slowest player trosmok 10-24-2001, 09:13 AM Al "the Bull" Ferrara, a Dodger outfielder, played eight seasons without stealing a base. However, he is four seasons shy of this player's career record without ever successfully swiping a base. Know who he is? Rematch 1915 10-24-2001, 04:15 PM Would it be former catcher and a later manager, Russ Nixon? trosmok 10-25-2001, 02:01 PM Yup. Twelve seasons as a player, five more as a manager, and nary a stolen base. fenwayjeff 10-25-2001, 07:32 PM I think Ernie Lombardi would still win the title of the 'Slowest player ever?' Anyone agree?
-FenwayJeff- 10-25-2001, 07:47 PM He was certainly the slowest I ever saw.
It's amazing, though, that someone so slow...who never had a chance of beating out an infield hit...still won TWO batting titles. He was a fearsome line drive hitter who hit everything so HARD!
Lombardi holds the NL record for grounding into the most DPs in a season (30) and most times leading the league in that department (4).
Jim Rice holds the ML season record for GIDP with 36, and also led the AL 4 times in this stat.
