Diaz had only one at-bat with the Red Sox in 1977 and played sporadically for Cleveland as the backup to Ron Hassey until an injury to Hassey made him the Indians' starting catcher early in 1981. He hit .356 with 25 RBI in the first half of that strike-interrupted season but sprained his wrist as the season resumed and missed the rest of the year. After he was traded to Philadelphia for 1982, his first NL season was his best, as he hit .288 with 18 HR and 85 RBI, but in 1984 he lost his job to Ozzie Virgil. Diaz became a starter again with the Reds in 1986-87, but hit only .219 in 92 games in 1988. In 1989, he shared the Reds' catching job with Jeff Reed. (

Robbery by Thompson Thwarted PLAYER CAUGHT STEALING FOUR TIMES IN 12-INNING GAME San Francisco Giants (7) at Cincinnati Reds Friday Night, June 27, 1986 Riverfront Stadium There have been five players caught stealing twice in the same inning, and many others who have been apprehended three times in one game. But there had never been anyone thrown out four times in a single contest until this night when the Giants' larcenous rookie, Robby Thompson , repeatedly tested the arm of Reds catcher Bo Diaz In the game, several of Thompson's teammates did have early success against Diaz. Randy Kutcher had stolen third base in the third inning, and with Thompson at bat in the fourth, pitcher Scott Garrelts and Kutcher combined for a double steal. On that play, Diaz' throw went into left field enabling Garrelts to score and, when left fielder Eric Davis fumbled the ball, Kutcher also tallied. Thompson then singled and, having just watched the previous farce unfold, was off and running. But Diaz anticipated the rookie's action and gunned him down at second base.
