Charles Darwin's theory that the strongest species will find a way to outlast the weaker ones can easily be applied to Major League Baseball as well. Especially this time of year. The strongest teams go on a winning streak, the best players get hot , and issues like injuries and playing time work themselves out for the good teams and bury the bad ones. The strong are outlasting the weak. At the same time, intangible elements about the baseball season begin to take their toll. Pitchers who have spent the whole season giving up gopher balls in hitter-friendly parks wear down and either get hurt or burn out mentally; batters get weary of trying to pump home runs out of SBC Park or Petco Park and go into slumps. Yes, even the ballparks themselves play a role in determining which teams are the fittest to survive.

E-Mail This Article Published on Friday, January 28, 2005 by the Associated Press Delgado Cleanly Fields Questions Regarding War Protest by Steven Wine Carlos Delgado is willing to stand up for his beliefs or, in his case, not stand up. At his introductory news conference Thursday with the Florida Marlins, Delgado said he'll continue to not stand up this season during the playing of "God Bless America." An opponent of the war in Iraq, Delgado refused to stand when "God Bless America" was played last season at games involving his Toronto Blue Jays. Instead, he would stay on the bench or go into the dugout tunnel. "I wouldn't call it politics, because I hate politics," Delgado said Thursday after finalizing his $52 million, four-year contract. "The reason why I didn't stand for `God Bless America' was because I didn't like the way they tied `God Bless America' and 9-11 to the war in Iraq in baseball. "I say God bless America, God bless Miami, God bless Puerto Rico and all countries until there is peace in the world." Marlins officials, who gave Delgado the richest per-season contract in the team's 12-year history, made no objection to his war protest.

E-Mail This Article Published on Friday, July 9, 2004 by CommonDreams.org Blue Jays Slugger Carlos Delgado Stands Up to War by Dave Zirin Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Carlos Delgado is known throughout the baseball world as one of the most feared sluggers in the game. Last year the 32 year old All-Star hit 42 homers and drove in 145 runs. He has averaged almost 40 home runs a year over the last six seasons. With his imposing physical frame, baldhead and gold earring he is one of the most recognizable faces in the game. Lately he has put the baseball world on notice that he will use his fame to fight the US’s war on the world. In a very sympathetic story on the pages of the Toronto Star, Delgado came public with the fact he won’t stand on the dug out steps for God Bless America. "I never stay outside for `God Bless America,'" Delgado said. "I actually don't think people have noticed it. I don't (stand) because I don't believe it's right, I don't believe in the war." Delgado also made clear that we won’t stand for the priorities of the US military machine "It's a very terrible thing that happened on September 11,” he said. “It's (also) a terrible thing that happened in Afghanistan and Iraq. I just feel so sad for the families that lost relatives and loved ones in the war. But I think it's the stupidest war ever. Who are you fighting against? You're just getting ambushed now. We have more people dead now, after the war, than during the war. You've been looking for weapons of mass destruction. Where are they at? You've been looking for over a year. Can't find them. I don't support that. I don't support what they do. I think it's just stupid."

COMMENTARY Ron Borges NBCSports.com contributor They booed Carlos Delgado on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. They should have cheered him. Delgado is the leading anti-war activist in major league baseball. He actually has thought about the U.S. invasion of Iraq and come to the conclusion that more and more Americans and more than a few shame-faced politicians finally have come to as well. "I think it's the stupidest war ever,'' the Blue Jays' power-hitting first baseman told the Toronto Star earlier this month after someone finally noticed that whenever "God Bless America'' was played in major league ballparks, Delgado would disappear until the song was over. This, as it turns out, was his silent protest of the U.S. invasion of Iraq that has now cost the lives of 900 U.S. citizens and countless more Iraqis, many of whom just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Toronto's Carlos Delgado walks out of the dugout to the clubhouse in the middle of the seventh inning, before the playing of "God Bless America," at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday in New York.
NEW YORK - Fervently anti-war, Carlos Delgado quietly carried out his personal protest this season, refusing to stand when "God Bless America" was played at ballparks across the majors. Most fans never saw him disappearing up the dugout tunnel or staying on the bench. And even teammates who disagreed with the Toronto slugger's political stance accepted his right to call the United States' invasion of Iraq "the stupidest war ever." This week, though, a lot more people noticed. The Blue Jays played at Yankee Stadium for the first time this year on Wednesday night. It's the only park in the majors where "God Bless America" has been played every game since the Sept. 11 attacks, a place where active military members are still admitted free. GROWING UP
Carlos Juan Delgado Jr. was born on June 25, 1972 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. First made famous by Christopher Columbus, who landed there on his second trip to the New World, Carlos's hometown is located on the island's northwest coast, about two hours from San Juan. Every offseason, he returns to those same shores, where he happily blends in with family, friends and neighbors to enjoy a couple of months as just another Aguadillan. One of four children, Carlos grew up with a variety of interests, thanks in large part to his parents, Carlos and Carmen. His father was a drug and alcohol counselor. His mother worked as a medical laboratory assistant. Both preached the importance of a good education, but neither was blind to their eldest son's obvious athletic ability. Though the Delgados lived comfortably, they realized a career as a professional athlete might take Carlos a long way. Carlos inherited his athletic skills from his father's side of the family. His grandfather was a first baseman whose booming bat was legend in Aguadilla. Carlos's dad was a talented basketball player who stood 6-4 and tipped the scales at more than 300 pounds. To this day, the Blue Jay slugger is known back home as "Little Carlos."

Major League Baseball Star Carlos Delgado Protests Iraq War
As part of the wave of patriotism that ran through the United States after we were attacked on 9-11 Major League Baseball began playing God Bless America in the middle of the seventh inning. Previously, this is called the Seventh Inning Stretch and the traditional song Take Me Out To The Ballgame was played and the entire crowd would sing along. Now they stop the game and all the players line up on the field and stand at attention as if the national anthem were being played. Except Blue Jays superstar Carlos Delgado . Beginning last year with the invasion of Iraq, Delgado couragously but quietly refused to enter the field during the playback of the song. He did not announce it, and in fact does stay on the field if he makes the last out so as not to make a show of his protest. "I'm not trying to get anyone mad," he said Monday in Oakland, where the Blue Jays were playing the Athletics. "This is my personal feeling. I don't want to draw attention to myself or go out of my way to protest. If I make the last out of the seventh inning, I'll stand there. But I'd rather be in the dugout."

THERE ARE SOME ONE-SEASON, MAJOR LEAGUE HITTING RECORDs THAT HAVE withstood concerted challenges over the years, and at this point in time still seem virtually unattainable. Rather than mention such apparently out-of-reach, individual records involving the most triples in one year (36 by Chief Wilson of the Pirates in 1912) or most runs scored (177 by Babe Ruth in 1921) or longest hitting streak (56 games by Joe DiMaggio in 1941), let's focus on one other batting mark that reflects amazing consistency over the long haul, not by one but by two players on the same team.
