CHICAGO - Brian Daubach said that being forced to leave Boston after last season was one of the toughest situations he has ever had to handle. This week, he learned that reunions can be just as difficult. The former Red Sox first baseman, who wasn't retained after becoming only the fifth player in franchise history to hit at least 20 home runs in each of his first four major league seasons, had mixed emotions about earning some retribution last night at U.S. Cellular Field.

Log in Register Help Daubach-ery The White Sox signed by Mike Carminati Daubach-ery The White Sox signed Brian Daubach to a minor-league deal yesterday. Daubach was non-tendored by the Red Sox even though it meant that they would be thin as Calista Flockhart on Yom Kippur at first base, corner outfield, and DH. The Pale Hose already have Paul Konerko at first and Frank Thomas to DH. Apparently, Daubach will be used as a Jeff Liefer replacement. That's kind of a shame given the dearth of quality first baseman around. Daubach isn't the next coming of Gehrig, but he has hit 20 home runs a season for the past four and has had an OPS at least 16% better than the adjusted league average in three of those seasons. His .812 OPS last year beat out a lot of other first basemen: former MVP Mo Vaughn, Angel and Tim McCarver hero Scott Spiezio, super-rookie Carlos Pena, playoff-bound Tino Martinez, Scott Hatteberg, Doug Mientkiewicz, Julio Franco, Mark Grace, J.T. Snow, and Nick Johnson (DH-1B), and teammate Tony Clark, among others. This is a guy that could be a useful part of a contender or a useful starter on a pretender. Now, he will have to be a bench player on a team that now has three first basemen better than the starter on its main competitor, the Twins. Though I hate to endorse any Jerry Reinsdorf team, the ChiSox could be the closest thing to a lock in MLB. I fully expect the world to be shocked if or when they win their division.

http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/001871.php
Main October 16, 2002 Thomas to the Red Sox: I got a couple of responses to this today. Josh Getman and I had this correspondence:
David: Love the blog. However, you wrote: "Does anyone think picking up Frank Thomas for $6 million a year wouldn't help the Red Sox, for example?" A "slugger" who will cost at least twice as much as Brian Daubach, is 4 years older than Daubach, is probably a worse fielder than Daubach and is just as likely (given his radically inconsistent health and performance of late) to underperform Daubach as overperform him? And a potential clubhouse cancer to boot? Please, by all means, bring him on! By the way, Daubach's clearly not the answer either, but that's another story. J Getman
To which I replied:
Josh, Thanks for the comment. I'd be willing to risk $6 million if the odds of his being healthy were good. He's a potential .400 OBA guy, something the Red Sox could use to counter Shea Hillenbrand. And if he is healthy, he'd pound the wall. The Red Sox clubhouse is cancerous by nature, so I don't think adding Thomas would make it any worse. :-) All in all, I think he's a risk worth taking. Thanks for reading

A-Rod 'gets bell rung' Ball bruises cheekbone but he's OK By DARREN EVERSON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Yankees trainer Gene Monahan examines Alex Rodriguez after third baseman takes throw on cheek. After caroming off Brian Daubach, ball thrown from left bounces before hitting Alex Rodriguez's face. TAMPA - Alex Rodriguez got his first taste last night of how dangerous third base can be. Specifically, he got it in the face. Rodriguez left the Yankees' spring-training game against the Red Sox in the fourth inning after getting hit in the face by a deflected Hideki Matsui throw while covering third. A-Rod suffered a bruised left cheekbone and said he "got his bell rung pretty good," but the injury wasn't serious - certainly not serious enough to prevent him from traveling with the team as it leaves for Japan today. "I'm going to pack tonight," he said with a smile. "Hopefully I can see." Rodriguez had some swelling under his left eye but said his vision was fine and the pain had gone down. The Yankees said he underwent a CAT scan that came back negative and that he is day-to-day.
