David Cone
Former Baseball Pitcher
In a career bordered on either side by extended stays with each of the two New York franchises, David Cone switched uniforms four times between 1992 and 1995. Blown by the winds of the pennant races, Cone became a hired gun for teams with World Series dreams, a rent-an-ace who instantly elevated a pitching staff and who earned a reputation as a big game starter.
Cone was a batter's worst nightmare, some nights needing only his 90+ MPH fastball to dominate an opposing lineup. His real strength, however, lay in his command of an array of pitches and his ability to throw them at a variety of speeds. At any point in an at-bat Cone was capable of pinpointing a cut fastball, slider, curve, changeup, or his lethal split-finger, which he used as his out pitch. At times he seemed able to invent pitches on the spot when the situation demanded. "David knows how to get guys out even when his arm feels like crap," said Yankee teammate Tino Martinez. "Sometimes, his stuff looks terrible out there, but he keeps putting zeroes on the scoreboard."

March 2003
by Michael Walls David Wells is a big dumb idiot. Okay? There – I said it. Somebody had to say it. I know this is exactly what every Yankee fan has been thinking since Wells' "tell all" book hit the media, causing a massive flurry of bad press. Even if you haven't read the book (which I haven't, and won't) you can sense that this is just the move of a big dumb idiot.
I'm a Yankee fan. And I use to be a David Wells fan. I mean, what wasn't there to like about David Wells. He's a self-proclaimed Yankee fan, especially of Babe Ruth. He represents the exact opposite of the stereotypical ball player, thus giving ordinary joes the warm fuzzy feeling that if Wells can make it, maybe anyone can. He's a big, burly, teddy bear that likes beer, bikes and heavy metal music. He's always got a big, shit-eating grin on his face, and never takes himself seriously.
Like Wells' perfect game. One of the highlights of my personal Yankees memories. I saw the game live. It was the most amazing moment I'd ever seen. I was jumping around my living room, by myself, as the entire stadium and Yankee team was doing the same. I will never forget that game.

Hmm, which team is talking about I wonder? Al Leiter also approached Cone at the event:
Apparently, Cone has signed to work on the YES network and is concerned about ticking of The Boss:
But Leiter is persistent:
Besides how well could Cone possibly pitch given his age and the time off. Here is the list of pitchers who missed a season at age 39 and pitched thereafter with the age-40+ stats: So, of the men who came back after spending their 39th year out of the majors, there are only 5 that started a significant number of games. Of those five, all had extenuating circumstances (a war, a new league, or segregation) that caused their situation. Cone has no such extenuating circumstances. His comeback would be, therefore, unprecedented. Posted on Feb 9, 2003 at 9:18 PM

Cone of Silence
by Mike Carminati David Cone made it official today: He is retiring Cone is a very intelligent and well-spoken man. He was a money pitcher who recorded a perfect game, won a Cy Young, and was on 5 World Series champions (with a 2-0 record and 2.12 ERA). He was a 20-game winner twice, 10 years apart, and won 194 in total with a .606 winning percentage. Cone appeared in five All-Star games and led his league in strikeouts twice. He had a very solid career but not a Hall-of-Fame type one, right? With A Pitcher's Story: Innings with David Cone , he attempts, with thrilling command, something he's never tried beforedevoting a whole volume to one player by spending an entire season at his heels. In pitcher David Cone, a cerebral student of his game and articulate practitioner of his craft, Angell finds a subject as perfect as the perfecto Cone hurled against the Expos on Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium in 1999. Better still, he finds in Cone a partner unwilling to shrink beneath the hot light of what would prove to be an agonizing and introspective year. One of the game's premier pitchers, Cone came unglued in 2000; his 4-14 season was a disaster. The "wizardly old master" Angell had intended to extol was suddenly "Merlin falling headlong down the palace stairs." There's gold to be spun from that, though, and Angell, the essayist as deft alchemist, spins away. The more Cone strugglesthe more he battles age, doubt, injury, and the various curves baseball fate can throwto regain what he's lost, the more valiant he seems. It gives
