Career Pitching Record A right-handed pitcher, Cone joined the AL's Kansas City Royals briefly in 1986 and was then traded to the New York Mets. After going 5-6 in 1987, he had a brilliant 1988 season, leading the NL with an .870 winning percentage on a 20-3 record. Cone won 14 games each of the next three seasons and led the league in strikeouts with 233 in 1990 and 241 in 1991. He set an NL record by striking out 19 hitters in a 9-inning game on October 6, 1991. The Mets traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays near the end of the 1992 season and he returned to Kansas City as a free agent in 1993. Expected to be the team's ace, he had a disappointing 11-14 season despite a 3.33 ERA. The Royals scored only 18 runs in his 14 losses. He rebounded with a 16-5 record in the strike-shortened 1994 season. Cone opened the 1995 season with the Blue Jays, but was traded to the Yankees in mid-season. He had a combined 18-8 record. The following year, though, he went on the disabled list for the first time in his career because of an aneurysm in two arteries in his right shoulder. Once again, Cone bounced back. He went 12-6 with a 2.82 ERA for the the Yankees in 1997 and then put together his second 20-victory season as the team won the 1998 American League pennant. Cone won the sixth and deciding game of the AL championship series against the Cleveland Indians. He also pitched well in his one World Series start, but didn't get the decision.

Adventure Yankee Fan Memories Baseball Musings Great Games I've Been To... On Being A Baseball Fan December 8 2000 : David's Gone Well, that's it, David Cone is moving on from the Yankees. They didn't offer him arbitration, and so as of midnight a few hours ago, the team and he must go their separate ways. Even as I type those words, it hasn't really sunk in yet. But I can definitely feel the ragged edges of broken-heartedness beginning to rattle around in my chest. I think this is the most... grief? pain? sadness? that I've felt as the result of a Yankee leaving since Reggie Jackson left the Bronx back in the 70s. But Reggie was different. Reggie was a swaggering man who carried himself like a king, clashed often with his bosses, and moved on like a conqueror to other territories, having made his place in the record books in both Anaheim and New York. Coney's not like that. There are some comparisons I can make: like Jackson he came to the Yankees with many accolades to his credit, a reputation as a star pitcher in the 80s with the Mets, a Cy Young Award from from 1994 (KC Royals) and a World Series ring from 1992 (Toronto Blue Jays). But unlike Jackson, whose heroism seemed to come predestined, Cone earned his place in Yankee fans' hearts with the dramatic ways in which he overcame adversity.

Satchel 04-18-2002, 02:41 PM Did he retire? what is he doing now? erictelevision 04-18-2002, 03:04 PM He's retired but would like to pitch again. 04-18-2002, 04:41 PM It was neat seeing him sitting in the right field bleachers
with the "bleacher creatures" at Yankee Stadium on Opening
Day. From what I hear, he even joined in on all the quirky
chanting that they do out there, including such favorites
as "box seats suck!" and "we got cone!"
My guess is that he will wind up pitching somewhere this
season...with the way that teams will no doubt be looking
for that extra experienced arm down the stretch, and he'll
be well rested to boot. Double Steal 04-18-2002, 04:47 PM

http://www.oregonbaseballcampaign.com LouGehrig 04-18-2002, 11:17 PM Don’t bet against David pitching for the Yankees again this season. He has said that the Yankees are the only team he will pitch for, so unless he signs with them, he is retired. With Pettitte hurt and Hitchcock questionable, David shall return to join David, and the two perfect game pitchers will be reunited.

Blown by the winds of the pennant races, Cone became a hired gun for teams with World Series dreams, a rent-an-ace who instantly elevated a pitching staff and who earned a reputation as a big game starter. In addition to his pitching success, Cone's mischievous manner and engaging personality made him a favorite with both fans and the press. More than a few fans dubbed themselves "Coneheads" and showed up at Shea Stadium wearing the cones of the eponymous Saturday Night Live characters. During the 1994 baseball strike, Cone became one of the players union's most active and visible members, testifying before Congress in January of 1995 against baseball's Antitrust Exemption. Describing his union ties, Cone said, "I guess it kind of stemmed from my father. He was a union guy working for the meat plant down in Kansas City. He was a union guy, and I guess it was just in my blood."

The House of David Baseball Team
By Joel Hawkins and Terry Bertolino
Arcadia Publishing
p.128
$18.99 Cover Price Perhaps the defining feature as noticed by outsiders in regards to the House of David religious colony was that they did not believe in shaving or cutting their hair. So, they went out and played baseball with heads of hair that in many cases could only be called manes. Baseball seemed to be an integral part of the early life of the House of David and they played as a semi-pro or minor league team from 1914 until 1955 when they stopped fielding baseball and basketball teams. The book gives an outline that just whets the appetite in regards to knowledge of whom the House of David and City of David were. It talks briefly about the imitators (and there were many), false HOD teams, how the team eventually had as many as three traveling teams and the differences when factionalism split the religious colony in two. During their glory days the HOD won many tournaments and beat opponents as good as they came. They fielded teams with players not only from their own colony, but they added others too. Some outside players important to them were Grover Alexander who played and managed, Chief Bender, and Satchel Paige.
