Tyrus Raymond Cobb December 18 in Narrows, Georgia July 17 in Atlanta, Georgia ), usually known as Ty Cobb and nicknamed "The Georgia Peach", was an American baseball player considered to be the greatest player of the "Deadball Era" (1900-1920), and perhaps of all time. He was the first player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame , in Ty Cobb baseball card, 1909 He was born to William, a teacher, and his child-bride, Amanda. William named his eldest child after the Phoenician city of Tyre , which withstood Alexander the Great 's army. William was opposed to Ty playing baseball, fearing it would turn him into a "ruffian." He finally relented, assuming that once Ty got it out of his system, he would return home to lead a "respectable" life. Ty was playing for the Augusta Tourists on August 8 when something happened that changed his life forever. William told Amanda he was going on a 3-day trip, but returned that night, and climbed up a ladder to their bedroom window. Allegedly believing him an intruder, she killed him with the shotgun he gave her for her protection. Although he initially supported her (she was acquitted at trial), Ty idolized William, and came to believe the rumors that Amanda was unfaithful and William was trying to catch her with her lover. Ty never got over the incident nor forgave her. Eight days after his father's funeral, Cobb was called up to the

U.S. baseball player, one of the greatest offensive players and perhaps the fiercest competitor in baseball history. in full Tyrus Raymond Cobb He joined the Detroit Tigers in 1905, batting left-handed but throwing right-handed. He spent 22 seasons as an outfielder with the Detroit Tigers, then managed them from 1921 to 1926. His record for career batting average (.366) remains unbroken; those for runs batted in (1,937), runs (2,245), and hits (4,189) stood for many years. He batted at least .300 for 23 straight seasons, an all-time record, and his three years of batting over .400 also represent a record. His career record of 892 stolen bases (partly the result of the brutality with which he used his cleats) was surpassed only in 1979. In the first election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, Cobb received the most votes.

BAD TO THE BONE
TY COBB
Ty Cobb ranks as one of Baseball's greatest players, if not the game's fiercest competitor. Everyone knows about his batting records! a lifetime batting average of .367, 4,191 hits, 12 batting titles, three .400 seasons, 892 career stolen bases, including a then record 96 steals in 1915.
Ty Cobb grew up in the post Civil War South where racism was the norm. This is not to say that it was right, but it was a given and accepted practice. What shaped Tys' personality more than anything was an incident that happened when he was just 18, just a few sparse weeks before he joined the Tigers.
His mother fatally shot his father outside her bedroom window. It was thought that she mistook him for a burglar, others whispered that he suspected her of infidelity. Either way, the killing of a Father who he dearly loved and admired spurred Cobb to become the fiercest competitor in baseball history.
The Georgia Peach hit .300 or better every year from 1906 to 1928 and won the AL batting championship every year from 1907 to 1915 and from 1917 to 1919. Some revisionist historians deprive him of his greatness, saying that he would not be able to achieve the same level of aggression and greatness in today's Baseball World. One must remember that if Ty Cobb were playing today he would have the same advantages in training that today's players have.

http://baseballguru.com/omi/ty_cobb.htm
ONE MORE INNING ALL GAME LONG CLAUDE LEUKER HAD BEEN GIVING TY COBB THE BUSINESS. HE HAD TALKED ABOUT HIS HITTING ABILITY AND HOW TERRIBLE A FIELDER HE WAS AND WHAT A MORON HE WAS IN REAL LIFE AND HE THREW IN SOME RACIAL SLURS GRABBED LEUKER AROUND THE NECK, SMASHED HIM TO THE GROUND AND PROCEEDED TO BEAT THE HECK OUT OF HIM. BEFORE ORDER WAS RESTORED THE WHOLE TIGER TEAM RUSHED INTO THE STANDS IN SUPPORT OF COBB. FANS AND PLAYERS PUMMEL-ED EACH OTHER AROUND, WITH SOME ROUGH IT WOULD LEAD TO BIGGER THINGS. THE NEXT TWO DAYS WOULD PROVE TO BE CRUCIAL ONES FOR THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL IN GENERAL, AND WOULD DEV- ELOP INTO CHANGES IN THE WAY THE GAME WOULD BE PLAYED IN THE FUTURE. BY THE WAY, WHEN A FAN POINTED OUT TO COBB THAT LEUKER WAS DISABLED AND HAD NO ARMS, COBB REPLIED THAT HE WOULD BEAT HIM UP EVEN IF HE HAD NO LEGS AS WELL. THE MEDIA HAD A FIELD DAY WITH THIS. T h e s uspensio n g am e AN ARTICLE FROM THE MONTHLY BASEBALL MAGAZINE ONE MORE INNING History gives us some wonderful stories that last through the years, ending up as mythic folklore. That was true on May 18, 1912. Nonentities who would never have been known to us were given their moment of glory, at least in terms of baseball lore. Philadelphia feasted. Led by Eddie Collins 5-6, their hitting included Amos Strunk 3-6, Stuffy McInnis and Hal Maggert 3-4. Jack Coombs was the winner and former Yankee great and future Hall of Famer Herb Pennock pitched three scoreless innings.

ERNIE HARWELL: Ty Cobb telegraphed his early exploits
April 5, 2004 BY ERNIE HARWELL
This is a baseball column, but the setting is the 1941 Masters. It was the first golf tournament I had broadcast, and it brought me together with two boyhood heroes. CATCH ERNIE'S NEW BOOK You can't hear the voice of the turtle on the radio, but you can read Ernie Harwell's words in a new book. The Free Press has published "Life After Baseball," a collection of the Hall of Fame broadcaster's favorite Free Press columns. It is Harwell's fifth book and second collection of Free Press columns. In "Life After Baseball," Ernie recalls legends such as Ty Cobb and Ted Williams, writes about the great Tigers teams of '68 and '84, and gives his thoughts about the state of the game today. The book also includes a section on Ernie's 2002 farewell, with photographs, his address to fans, a tribute from other broadcasters and Free Press coverage. Order the book for $14.95 at
