Eight More Men Out
by Peter Handrinos A Modest Proposal for Cleaning Out the Hall
UNITED STATES OF BASEBALL
BY PETER HANDRINOS

There’s a special quality to the Hall of Fame. It’s the pinnacle of the National Pastime. No matter how many sacrifices a man has to go through, no how many decades of effort and obstacles, baseball’s ultimate vindication makes it all worth it. It’s immortality. It’s something no one can ever take away from you. Except it shouldn’t be. Let’s face it, the procedures to honor the very greatest of baseball figures hasn’t always been great. Sometimes, some less than spectacular guys have somehow snuck in. On certain rare occasions, real jerks have ended up tracking dirt in our Hall. Since mistakes have been made on the road to Cooperstown, mistakes should be unmade. If some players are disqualified before they’re selected, why not disqualify some real jerks after they’ve selected? My modest little proposal- start kicking out some unworthy Hall members. Un-induct some inductees, recall some of the elected.

A ball bat is a wondrous weapon.
Ty Cobb

Baseball is a red-blooded sport for red-blooded men. It's no pink tea, and mollycoddles had better stay out. It's a struggle for supremacy, a survival of the fittest.
Ty Cobb

Baseball was one-hundred percent of my life.
Ty Cobb

Every great batter works on the theory that the pitcher is more afraid of him than he is of the pitcher.
Ty Cobb
I had to fight all my life to survive. They were all against me... but I beat the bastards and left them in the ditch. Ty Cobb I have observed that baseball is not unlike a war, and when you come right down to it, we batters are the heavy artillery. Ty Cobb I may have been fierce, but never low or underhand. Ty Cobb I never could stand losing. Second place didn't interest me. I had a fire in my belly. Ty Cobb I regret to this day that I never went to college. I feel I should have been a doctor. Ty Cobb Speed is a great asset; but it's greater when it's combined with quickness - and there's a big difference. Ty Cobb The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault.

Ty Cobb Educational Foundation The Foundation was established by the late Tyrus R. Cobb for the purpose of assisting capable and deserving residents of Georgia who need financial assistance in completing their college education.
Foundation scholarships are granted to qualified students for the purpose of attending an accredited college or university full time. All scholarships are granted without subsequent obligation of the student to the Foundation; however, former recipients and others are urged to make contributions to the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation when circumstances permit.
Although Ty Cobb's top annual salary as a baseball player was less than $40,000, his shrewd investments made him a financial success at an early age.
One of the many investments that contributed to his early success was the purchase of stock in a little-known Southern beverage company called Coca-Cola. Cobb's financial prosperity eventually allowed him to establish a scholarship program that has to date assisted thousands of Georgians to attend college.

July 18, 1927

Joe Jackson was banned from baseball after being involved in a conspiracy to "throw" (fix the outcome of) the World Series in 1919, known as the Black Sox Scandal. Cobb was allowed to resign from professional baseball in 1926 after supposedly being involved in gambling violations. Later, baseball's first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, cleared Cobb of charges and allowed him to play again. Cobb, a left-handed batter who threw with his right hand, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Cobb's autobiography, titled My Life in Baseball, was published in 1961.

July 18, 1927

Who do you think are the greatest baseball players of all time? If it were 1927, you might have named Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb. On July 18, 1927, Cobb recorded his 4,000th career hit. Can you imagine getting 4,000 hits? Cobb is considered by many to be the greatest offensive player in baseball history. He started his professional baseball career when he was 18 years old. For 22 out of 24 seasons, he played with the Detroit Tigers. In this baseball card from 1912, Cobb is stealing third base.

One of the greatest tributes to the ability of Ty Cobb rests in the the fact that, when he retired after the 1928 season, he held 90 major records in professional baseball. Cobb's ability, as great as it was, often played second fiddle to his reputation as one of the toughest players to ever take the field. One of the funnier incidents attributed to Cobb comes when an interviewer asks Cobb how he would hit under the baseball conditions of the late 1950s. Cobb replied, "Oh, I'd hit .310, .315!" The interviewer asked Cobb why he would only hit .310. Cobb replied, "I'm 72 years old now!" Another of the stories attributed to Ty Cobb tells of how he got tired of answering questions about Babe Ruth and his abilites to hit home runs. Cobb told reporters that it didn't take any special skills to hit home runs. Cobb then slid his hands down on his bat and hit 3 home runs in the game. The next day, he hit 2 more.

Hello Everyone, Hope your summer is going well. Every year when we break camp and arrive at a new city, we have to find a place to live for the next five months. The ball club usually has a list of apartments that will work with the players and staff on short- term leases. The parent club provides the coaching staff with a living allowance. I don’t want to say how much it is but it is not enough. So, one has to budget his allowance to try and make everything fit or one is actually digging into his personal savings to survive during the season. I know for me, I have a mortgage payment, two car payments, two growing children and a wife with good taste. So it is very painful to exceed the set out budget. There are some expenses that cannot be avoided when attempting too budget expenses. A person has to pay rent, furniture rental, power, and telephone. My cell phone would suffice but there are times where I am required to send in my post game computer report via phone line.
