How Cobb Got Along With Others
Part 3: Ty and Those Outside Baseball
Perhaps the most defining aspect of Cobb's personality was his racism. Although he grew up in a time and place where behavior like his was common and accepted, it is extremely appalling to most people today. He simply felt that blacks were inferior and would never receive the same treatment from him that whites did. Examples unfortunately abound. One day while walking in Detroit, he stepped in freshly poured asphalt and was yelled at by Fred Collins, a construction worker who happened to be black. Cobb responded by slapping Collins, knocking him to the ground, and continuing on his way. He was charged with assault and battery and found guilty, but received a suspended sentence. Collins then filed a civil suit, which Cobb settled out of court for $75. An unfortunate incident in Cleveland's Hotel Euclid forced Cobb to go through Canada to avoid arrest during the 1909 World Series in Pittsburgh. Late one Friday night, Cobb got in an argument with the elevator operator and slapped him. The night manager, a black man named George Stansfield, came to aid the elevator operator and ended up in a shouting match with Cobb. Stansfield then hit Cobb with his nightstick, and the two rolled on the floor. Cobb drew his knife and slashed Stansfield, while Stansfield drew his pistol and hit Cobb again with the nightstick. Stansfield filed both criminal and civil suits against Cobb, but later dropped the criminal suit. But the case was still pending during the World Series, with an arrest warrant out for Cobb. Police waited for the Tiger train through Ohio en route to Pittsburgh for the World Series to arrest him, but Cobb was going through Canada. The civil suit was settled for $100 and court costs.

http://www.cmgww.com/baseball/cobb/bio.html
His best years were 1911, when he led the league in every major offensive category but homers and batted a career high .420, and in 1915 when he stole 96 bases.
Ty paid the price for success. He would practice sliding until his legs were raw. He would place blankets along the base and practice bunting a ball on the basket. During the winter he hunted through daylight hours in weighted boots so that his legs would be strong for the upcoming campaign. He overlooked no opportunity to gain an edge over his opponents, most of whom admired his drive to succeed.
Cobb appreciated the value of a dollar and engaged in annual haggles with Detroit executives before signing his contract. Cobb's earnings were invested wisely, mostly in General Motors and Coca-Cola stock, which made him very wealthy and probably baseball's first millionaire.

"Rarely should a base runner risk a steal when the game is in balance. It's to be used when you can afford to fail."
"Most of all I was saddling that team with a psychological burden so that they would be muttering, Cobb is crazy. He'll run anytime and in any situation. It would help give them the jitters and they'd concentrate so much on me they were not paying any attention to the business at hand. My failures rarely were complete failures. They were more like future investments."
"A ball bat is a wondrous weapon."
"Baseball was one-hundred percent of my life."
"Every great batter works on the theory that the pitcher is more afraid of him than he is of the pitcher."
"I had to fight all my life to survive. They were all against me... but I beat them and left them in the ditch."
"I have observed that baseball is not unlike a war, and when you come right down to it, we batters are the heavy artillery."

As an original inductee into the Hall of Fame in 1936, Cobb outpolled all other baseball players, including Babe Ruth. He won twelve batting titles and in three seasons hit above .400. Called "the Georgia Peach," Cobb played for the Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics. His temper, meanness, and aggressiveness, both on and off the field, made him generally disliked by his teammates.

Career Batting Record Some consider Cobb the greatest baseball player ever. He was certainly the most feared and most disliked. He played as if driven by demons. Hughie Jennings, who managed him for several years, said of Cobb, "When he was in his prime, he had half the American League scared stiff." Rube Bressler, who played against him, described Cobb as "the most feared man in the history of baseball." Cobb once announced, "I would cut the heart out of my best friend if he ever tried to block the road." His apparent hatred for the world and almost everyone in it probably stemmed, at least in part, from his father's tragic death in 1905. Suspecting his wife of infidelity, W. H. Cobb climbed a ladder to look into her bedroom window one night and Mrs. Cobb shot and killed him. She was tried for voluntary manslaughter but won acquittal, testifying that she had mistaken her husband for an intruder. Cobb, who was very close to his father, saw his mother only occasionally after that and didn't attend her funeral. On August 30 of that year, Cobb joined the AL's Detroit Tigers. From the beginning, he refused to room with anyone, ate his meals alone, and rarely spoke to any of his teammates off the field. But even the opponents who feared him soon had to respect his skills as a hitter and base-runner.

Special to ESPN.com
It's difficult to tell which is longer the list of records Ty Cobb left shattered when he retired from baseball, or the stories of his nastiness. "In legend I am a sadistic, slashing, swashbuckling despot who waged war in the guise of sport." Cobb, who wrote that just before his death in 1961, was possibly the only one not to believe the legend. For everyone else, this was a case of perception and reality meeting. The Georgia Peach was a southern Protestant who hated northerners, Catholics, blacks and apparently anybody else who was different from him. And, in turn, opponents (and some teammates) despised him. They disliked his aggressive behavior, his attitude, his maniacal will to succeed. Cobb was a 6-foot-1, 175-pounder who threw right (average arm) and batted left. He kept his hands about three inches apart so he could place hits better. When he retired in 1928, he had set some 90 records. Seven decades later, he still holds many. Nobody has yet bettered his .367 lifetime average, his 12 batting titles, his hitting at least .320 for 23 consecutive seasons, or his 2,245 runs scored. averaged .401. Gone, though, is the treasured record of 4,191 hits, broken by Pete Rose 57 years later.

None of his 9 home runs left the park. October 9 On the final day of the 1910 baseball season, Ty Cobb sits out to preserve his lead in the batting average race with Nap Lajoie. Going eight for eight, Lajoie almost took the crown from Cobb. The Chalmers Company, who gave a car to the winner of the batting crown, decided to award two cars that year. May 18 For three innings Ty Cobb put up with insults from New York Highlanders fan Claude Lueker. Finally, Cobb charge the man, beating him fiercely. Lueker, who had lost a hand in an industrial accident could not defend himself. A. L. President Ban Johnson, who was attending the game, immidiately suspended Cobb. August 19 Ty Cobb collects his 3,000 hit May 5 Ty Cobb enjoys his best day at the plate, hitting three home runs, a double and two singles. The 16 total bases set an American League record that still stands. Cobb began his professional career at the age of eighteen with the Detroit Tigers with which he played twenty-two of his twenty-four seasons. Like the careers of baseball greats Pete Rose and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Cobb's was marred by scandal. He was allowed to resign in 1926 in lieu of being banned for alleged gambling violations. However, Cobb was subsequently exonerated and reinstated by baseball's first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Cobb, born in Narrows, Georgia and nicknamed "The Georgia Peach," was known for his temper as well as for his outstanding athletic ability. He stole home fifty times, won twelve batting average titles, and managed the Detroit Tigers for six seasons while also playing center field. His lifetime batting average was .367. Cobb made use of his reputation as an aggressive (often dirty) base runner to intimidate infielders, stealing 892 bases during his professional career. Ty Cobb was elected to the

They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
