September 6, 2001 Posted: 3:02 PM EDT (1902 GMT) (PEOPLE EN ESPANOL) Puerto Rican baseball legend Roberto Clemente knew he would die young, or so he told those closest to him. Fate proved him right. When his Nicaragua-bound plane filled with earthquake relief aid went down in 1972 off the coast of San Juan, Clemente was only 38. Those short years, however, were enough to leave an impressive mark. As a Pittsburgh Pirate, Clemente was a four-time Major League batting champ, earned a dozen Golden Gloves, appeared in a dozen All-Star games and was National League MVP in 1966 and the MVP of the 1971 World Series. Off the field, this family man dedicated himself to a wife and three children, as well as to scores of fans that still benefit from his charity work. "If you have an opportunity to make things better and you don't,"Clemente once said, explaining his philosophy, "you're wasting your time on Earth." Words he lived and died by.

Pittsburgh, PA After spending 30 years at Three Rivers Stadium , a dull cookie cutter stadium, the Pittsburgh Pirates now play at one of the most beautiful ballparks in baseball. During the mid 1990’s with the terrible economic situation in baseball, the Pirates demanded that a ballpark be built or they would move to another city. The Pirates began drawing up plans for a new ballpark that would be similar to their previous home before Three Rivers Stadium, Forbes Field. Bonds were approved for $216 million to build a ballpark for the Pirates in 1997. Construction began in April 1999. The ballpark was named PNC Park after PNC Bank bought the naming rights to the ballpark.

Clemente wore this batting helmet during his career with the Pirates. Before 1951, at least six major and minor league batters were killed by fastballs and many others injured. In 1952, the fiberglass batting helmet was introduced in the majors, with both leagues mandating its use by 1956.

Main December 27, 2004 Roberto's Back In yesterday's post about the Puerto Rican Winter Leagues , I noticed this item (emphasis added). Bithorn Stadium, just 10 minutes south of San Juan, has struggled to draw even nominal attendance despite a renovated stadium and the presence of Crabbers infielders Alomar and Carlos Baerga (who doubles as team president). A recent injury to Alomar has helped curtail interest , but ardent fans say the team's problems — as well as the league's and, by extension, Puerto Rico's — run much deeper. I couldn't find anything about it on the web, so I contacted Edwin Rodriguez who runs the web page for the winter league. He filled in some details: Alomar started the season in Puerto Rico already under treatment for his lower back. At least once a week he was flying to the states (don't know where) to get treatment. After the second week of the season it was too much for him, his back wasn't in good shape. That much I can tell you, I was asking the same when he left but nobody knew the specifics. This is the same back injury that kept him out of action most of September. I was wondering why there's been

Roberto Clemente (1934-1972)
By almost any account, Roberto Clemente is among the greats of baseball history. He was the first Latin American player elected to the baseball Hall of Fame and is celebrated for his humanitarianism as well as his athleticism. Clemente played right field for the Pirates for 18 years, batting above .300 for 13 seasons and making 3000 career hits. The height of his career came in 1971 when he led his team to a World Series victory and took home the MVP trophy.

Roberto Clemente
Roberto Clemente was born Aug. 18, 1934 in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was raised i a poor family there. Roberto loved baseball when he was a kid. He always wanted to play pro ball, but h couldn't hit or throw as hard as other kids. By the time he got to high school, he was running faster and hitting harder, so he began to play baseball. Roberto ran so fast because he was on the track team, and he threw so hard because he was on the javelin team. He later married Vera Zabala, and they lived in Puerto Rico where he made a living playing baseball. In 1954, when he was 19 years old, Roberto was drafted into the pros. The scouts of the Pittsburgh Pirates saw him playing in the minor league and signed him with their team. He played baseball for 18 years, and won 12 gold gloves, four batting titles and a Most Valuable Player award in 1966. He played in 12 National League All-Star teams and two World Series. In an interview done after. the 1972 season ended Roberto said, "I am convinced that God wanted me to be a baseball player. I was born to play baseball." Fourteen months after his World Series win, Roberto died on New Year's Eve 1972. He was taking relief supplies to earthquake-torn Nicaragua. Roberto had heard supplies were being stolen there and he said they would not steal from him. Even though he was warned the plane was overloaded, he insisted on taking off and the plane crashed into the sea off San Juan. It was never found.
