Oakland: Roberto Clemente
Roberto Walker Clemente , Voted into baseball's Hall of Fame 20 March 1973. BORN: 18 August 1934. DIED: 31 December 1972. BURIED:
  • He is rightfully Pittsburgh's pride and joy. The fans laugh at his antics, ooh-and-ah at his spectacular plays, roar in anticipation of his performance, and in general love the man. In my recollection there has never been any concerted booing of Clemente at Forbes Field, a remarkable tribute from fans not always noted for their generosity toward their heroes. Long ago they began delighting in this finely-honed, slightly structured man whose strength and skill are evident in the results rather in his appearance. And they have never stopped.
  • That play Clemente made in the eighth inning is why he is the greatest player in the game today. Next week in the championship playoffs and the following week in the World Series, every player will make that play. They'll be diving for balls. But Roberto Clemente is the only player in the game today who will make that play in a meaningless game the last week of the season. That's why he's

The Cangrejeros shared Sizto Stadium with rival San Juan. Santurce's powerful teams of the 1950's featured an outfield that included both Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente(#21). Jerseys
Quite simply, the real thing. Hand-crafted from genuine wool baseball flannel. Each shirt is researched, and carefully re-created using the same materials and production techniques as the original. Lettering on most models is wool felt. Some of the more expensive models (for example our 1938 Baltimore Orioles shirt) feature manual chain-stitch embroidery. The design is directly embroidered into the garment to produce a brilliant effect. Jersey Numbers Jersey prices include numerals, except where noted (most teams did not wear numbers prior to 1930.) We have chosen a standard number for all of our shirts, which is listed in the text for that model. You may order a different number at no extra charge, but it may slightly delay your order.

The Record, Bergen County, NJ CLEMENTE'S LIVING LEGACY ; Roberto Jr. Still Haunted By His Father's Tragic Death BY BOB KLAPISCH April 11, 2003
North Jersey Media Group Inc.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Not a day elapses when Roberto Clemente Jr. isn't reminded of the legacy bestowed upon him by his father the greatest baseball player Puerto Rico has ever known, and perhaps its most tragic figure. All Clemente has to do is introduce himself just say the name - - and people stop dead cold, mid-sentence, and relive the day of his father's death. "Everyone seems to know where they were, what they were doing, the exact spot when they heard the news," Clemente said. "People share this memory every day. I've had grown men cry right in front of me. It's something I've grown to live with, because of who my father was." The date was Dec. 31, 1972, when the Pirates' outfielder died on a mercy mission from Puerto Rico to Nicaragua. Clemente's plane, overloaded with relief supplies to help the 250,000 victims of an earthquake in Managua, -crashed just one mile after takeoff. The younger Clemente, now 37, has never forgotten the events of his father's death, nor has he forgiven himself for letting his father leave. Roberto Jr. said, "We were having a big New Year's eve party, and I walked into the room where everyone was. I said to my father, 'Don't get on that plane.'

Bruce Markusen's Page Hall of Fame ROBERTO CLEMENTE WALKER The son of Puerto Rican sugar cane plantation workers, Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934 in Carolina, Puerto Rico. His father (Melchor) served as a foreman and his mother (Luisa) worked as a laundress and cook. In 1952-53 and 53-54, the teen-aged Clemente experienced professional baseball for the first time. Clemente played for the Santurce Crabbers, a Puerto Rican winter league team that featured a mix of Latin, Negro League and major league players, including future Hall of Famer Willie Mays. A lifetime .362 hitter in 14 World Series games, Clemente helped the Pirates to surprising World Championships over the New York Yankees in 1960 and the Baltimore Orioles in 1971. In 1972, in his final regular season at-bat, Clemente collected his milestone 3000 th base hit. For his career, which stretched from 1955 to 1972, he batted .317 with 240 home runs. In December, 1972, after a devastating earthquake struck the Nicaraguan city of Managua, Clemente responded to reports that relief supplies were being intercepted by government authorities. Organizing a collection of food, clothing and medicine, Clemente accompanied the airlifting of supplies from the San Juan International Airport. Shortly after takeoff, the aging, overloaded DC-7 encountered engine trouble and plunged into the Atlantic Ocean. All five passengers, including the 38-year-old Clemente, were presumed dead. The Puerto Rican government declared an official three-day period of mourning. After the Hall of Fame announced that it had waived its standard five-year waiting period, the baseball writers made Clemente the first Latin American member of the Cooperstown shrine.

Roberto Walker Clemente, the first Latin American player to be admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame , was one of Major League Baseball's greatest players. He was also one of the world's best known and remembered humanitarians. His accomplishments on the field enabled him to dedicate his life to those less fortunate. Mr. Clemente, born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934, was the youngest child of Melchor and Luisa Clemente. The small town of Carolina was dominated by the sugar industry and few other opportunities existed. His father became a foreman for the local sugar company while his mother worked at the plantation house. Roberto's father also sold meat and later purchased trucks that enabled him to enter the construction trade on a part-time basis. The Clementes valued education, and they wanted their son to be an engineer. Although Roberto was a good student, he had an early interest in baseball. He frequently engaged in poor person's baseball practicehitting tin cans with a stick. In addition to playing baseball during high school, he pursued track and javelin, throwing to the extent that he was considered a potential Olympic competitor. Roberto was judged to be a natural athlete by many. He demonstrated a supreme love of baseball while aiming for excellence in every chosen endeavor.

Roberto Clemente:
Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates

By Jonah Winter
Illustrated by Raúl Colón
Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2005. Unpaginated. It is possible, at times, to tell of a whole life in just a few words. Add some brilliant pictures and, in the case of Roberto Clemente you have heartfelt introduction to a great baseball player who was also an exemplary human being who died while on a mission of mercy. In our day, with unbelievable salaries, drug scandals, and ticket prices that put the game out of the reach of far too many fans, readers will welcome this chance, more than thirty years after Clemente’s death, to celebrate and perhaps emulate him. Jonah Winter’s elegiac text begins by describing young Roberto as “a boy who had very little but a fever to play and win at baseball.” In his passion to play, Roberto fashions bats, gloves, and balls from tree branches, coffee-bean sacks, and soup cans. He played his way to the Major Leagues and the Pittsburgh Pirates. His electric play was immediately noticed by the fans, and he took his team from last-place to the World Series. Winter also chronicles Clemente’s troubles with the press throughout his career, troubles that motivated him to become even better. He describes Clemente’s three-thousandth hit, followed all too soon by his untimely death in a plane crash on the way to deliver emergency supplies to earthquake victims. Winter writes:

Roberto Clemente *On this date in 1934, Roberto Clemente was born. He was a Black baseball player and humanitarian.
From Carolina, Puerto Rico, he was the seventh (youngest) child of Luisa and Melchor Clemente. As a baseball player, Clemente’s skill and verve won the acclaim of fans around the world and especially in the Western Hemisphere. He became baseballs fist pan-Caribbean super-star, respected off the field as well as on the field. After starting with the Puerto Rican Santurce Cangrejeros in 1952, Clemente signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Drafted out of the Dodgers organization by the Pittsburgh Pirates, one year later the 5’11’’, 185-pound talent was starting in right field for the Buc’s.
In his 18 seasons with Pittsburgh he won four batting titles, hit 240 home runs, and had a lifetime.317 batting average. Clemente was a perennial all-star and 1966 Most Valuable Player while winning twelve Gold Glove awards with his speed technique and rifle arm. He also hit safely in all fourteen World Series games he played in, compiling a.362 average and helping win the World Championship in 1960. Following the 1972 season, Clemente managed the Puerto Rica National team to the world amateur championship in Nicaragua. After his return to Puerto Rico, Managua was struck by an earthquake and he plunged into relief efforts.
