Roberto Clemente Some consider Roberto Clemente the best right fielder in the history of baseball. In his 18-year baseball career, Roberto received many awards. He won four batting crowns and 12 Gold Gloves. He was voted the Most Valuable Player in the National League in 1966, and the World Series Most Valuable Player in 1971. He also was the first Hispanic elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In addition, Roberto was generous to those in need. Roberto, whose full name was Roberto Walker Clemente, was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico to Melchor Clemente and Luisa (Walker) Clemente. Melchor worked on a sugar cane plantation and helped his wife manage a grocery store and meat market. While still attending high school, Roberto began playing baseball for the Santurce Crabbers, a professional Puerto Rican baseball team. Two years later, a Brooklyn Dodgers scout recruited him to play for the Dodger's farm team, the Montreal Royals, the same team Jackie Robinson once joined. Despite the team's efforts to keep Roberto's talents unknown, the Pittsburgh Pirates recruited him on November 22, 1954. Roberto played right field for the Pirates for the rest of his career. Two years after joining the team, Roberto became the top player among outfielders, recording 22 assists. Roberto was often seen using the famous basket catch, a technique his predecessor, Willie Mays, often used. The Pirates won the National League Pennant in 1960 and then beat the Yankees in the World Series. Roberto hit safely in every game, batting .310. This was the same season that Roberto played on his first All-Star team.

"It's not just a death, it's a hero's death. A lot of athletes do wonderful things – but they don't die doing it," says former teammate Steve Blass about Roberto Clemente on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Playing in an era dominated by the likes of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente was usually overlooked by fans when they discussed great players. Not until late in his 18-year career did the public appreciate the many talents of the 12-time All-Star of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Clemente's legacy lives on look no farther than the number on Sammy Sosa's back. Of all Clemente's skills, his best tool was his right arm. From rightfield, he unleashed lasers. He set a record by leading the National League in assists five seasons. He probably would have led even more times, but players learned it wasn't wise to run on Clemente. Combined with his arm, his ability to track down fly balls earned him Gold Gloves the last 12 years of his career. At bat, Clemente seemed uncomfortable, rolling his neck and stretching his back. But it was the pitchers who felt the pain. Standing deep in the box, the right-handed hitter would drive the ball to all fields. After batting above .300 just once in his first five seasons, Clemente came into his own as a hitter. Starting in 1960, he batted above .311 in 12 of his final 13 seasons, and won four batting titles in a seven-year period.

It was so like him. As waves of applause washed over him and he gazed at the scroll of appreciation signed by more than 300,000 of his fellow Puerto Ricans for his special "Night" at Three Rivers Stadium in 1970, Roberto Clemente thought mostly of the money an other gifts he received that would go to his favorite charity, Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital. What more could he want for himself? He had a splendid .349 the year before for the Pirates and was on his way to a .352 season; he was a hero to baseball fans in his adopted Pittsburgh and elsewhere, and he was living his philosophy of life on the field and off. And it was so like him, when an earthquake struck Nicaragua in December 1972, to begin logging 14-hour days as "honorary" chairman of the Puerto Rican earthquake relief committee. Hearing of theft of emergency supplies he had helped procure, he gave up New Year's Eve festivities to fly with a planeload of material to ensure its distribution...only to die in a tragic plane crash at age 38. But fittingly, at the time of his death, Clemente had just reached a career base-hit total of 3,000, a feat accomplished by only 15 other players in major league history. He had hit .300 or better 13 times while winning four National League batting titles; was twice the league's Most Valuable Player, was a 12-time All-Star selection, and had captured 11 Golden Glove awards for his awesome fielding skills at his right field position in a remarkable 18-year career.
