Main August 01, 2004 Eric's Eye All those years of talking to Eric Chavez about process appear to have finally paid off. Chavez has a .406 OBA this year, after a double, HR and a walk today. His batting average, .272, is just a hair below his lifetme mark. But his OBA is 50 points higher. Chavez has found the sweet spot where he's still producing power and hits, but making a lot fewer outs doing so. He's made the jump from star to super star. Posted by David Pinto at 05:09 PM Sluggers TrackBack (0) Comments What's weird is that Eric's splits have completely flopped. He's regressed slightly against righties (.845 OPS compared to a career mark of .916), but has gone Frank Thomas on lefties: .333/.431/.600. That's insane, considering he's a career .235/.295/.403 hitter against southpaws. In other words, I'm skeptical. No matter, it also a shame he's improved (so far) in a year when he can no longer claim to be the best all-around 3B in the AL. Chavez: .277/.402/.517 (.320 EqA)
Rodriguez .285/.374/.533 (.317 EqA) And A-Rod has shown a great glove at 3B.

Main March 18, 2004 Eric the Gold The A's have decided that Eric Chavez is worth a long term contract , and have signed him to a $66 million deal over six years. Why Chavez and not Tejada? Both put up 25 wins shares last year. And Tejada does play the tougher defensive position. But Chavez is a year younger, so at 26 he is still improving. He has a higher career OBA (.350 to .336), so he's improving from a higher level. My guess is the A's could only keep one of them at this point, and they chose younger player with the better OBA. I believe they made the right decision. Posted by David Pinto at 01:32 PM Transactions TrackBack (0) Comments Chavez is one year younger *if* you assume that Tejada'a listed age is real. My guess: it isn't. tim Posted by: Tim at March 18, 2004 01:53 PM It makes sense long term, I think. But if they chose Tejada, they could have had one more year of both of them, and maybe make a run with a much better lineup. Posted by: Daniel at March 18, 2004 01:56 PM Plus, they had Bobby Crosby ready to step in at shortstop. Also, odd as it sounds, it looks like it's an awful lot easier to find a good shortstop than a good third baseman these days. There's Chavez and Rolen... and who else, really? A bunch of okay and/or aging guys.

Eric Chavez fired up the Athletics with a speech on the team bus June 9, with the team mired in an 11-game losing streak.
COMMENTARY Neil Hayes NBCSports.com contributor Eric Chavez wasn't a leader. The guy can hit, no question, even if he is prone to slow starts. He can field. No doubt about that either. The A's third baseman has won four consecutive Gold Glove Awards. The knock on Chavez was that he was too insecure to set an example for others. That's why people couldn't believe why A's general manager Billy Beane would allow Miguel Tejada to sign with the Baltimore Orioles as a free agent and instead sign Chavez to a long-term deal, even if Beane did have shortstop Bobby Crosby waiting in the wings. Tejada was the soul of the A's before he was lured away by free-agent riches. He had boundless energy. He was a cheerleader, bouncing around in the dugout, pulling for his teammates, almost willing the team toward another unlikely rally. But it was Chavez who on June 9 stood up on the team bus and did something that leaders do. The A's were mired in an 11-game road losing streak. He called his teammates out, telling them that their effort and attitude wasn't good enough.

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Indians swept Oakland at its low point in late May, and now are seeing the Athletics at their best: right back in the playoff chase and poised for another sensational second half. The A's own the wild-card lead, and they don't care. This confident bunch believes it can take down the Angels and win the AL West. Eric Chavez homered twice and drove in four runs, Barry Zito pitched six strong innings to win his sixth start in a row and Oakland defeated the Indians 13-4 Monday night for its seventh straight victory. "To me, the wild card is always second until the last couple weeks," said Chavez, who bounced back from a shaky road trip for a big offensive night. "I still want to hunt down the Angels and try to win the division." Mark Ellis hit a two-run double, Scott Hatteberg had a two-run single and scored twice, Dan Johnson and Jason Kendall drove in two runs apiece, and Bobby Kielty added an RBI double as the streaking A's moved a half-game ahead of idle Minnesota.

They drove together to Poway Community Park, where they played basketball until sweat dripped down their backs, until their breath left trails in the cool night air, until the park lights were ready to go dark. Then they headed home and tried to get some sleep. In just 12 hours, the 18-year-olds would take a major step toward the goal they had set for themselves when they were Little Leaguers. On June 4, 1996, the names Munson and Chavez would be entered into the Major League Baseball amateur draft. At the end of the day, the best friends would be one step closer to The Show, the name ballplayers have given to the big leagues.

Munson, Chavez mull the costs, beneftis of playing for USC By PAULA BOTT San Diego Union-Tribune As the afternoon sun faded on draft day, Eric Chavez struggled calling his buddy, Eric Munson. But what would Chavez say? Both had hoped to in the first round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft. But only Chavez had made the cut. Munson wasn't chosen until late in the second round. For the first time in their 13-year friendship, Eric Chavez and Eric Munson weren't a package deal. Never before had Chavez felt like such a stranger to his friend. He asked his parents for advice. Should he initiate the contact? Or should he wait for Munson to call him? It was Munson who broke the ice.

These fantasy baseball projections were produced prior to the start of the 2004 season for an owner participating in a nonstandard 6 x 7 fantasy baseball competition. MLB players were ranked on the basis of 2004 projections using eligibility rules and scoring categories specific to this fantasy league. For hitters, the scoring categories were batting average (BA), on-base percentage plus slugging percentage (OPS), runs scored (RUNS), runs batted in (RBI), home runs (HR), and stolen base percentage (SBPCT). Was the Eric Chavez signing a good one?
by Matthew Namee March 22, 2004 Last week, Eric Chavez signed a 6-year, $66 million contract extension with the Oakland A's , locking him up through his 32nd birthday. Aaron Gleeman had a fine analysis of the deal on Friday, pointing out that Chavez is already the second-best third baseman in the game today, and he's just entering his prime. I don't disagree with any of that; Chavez is an outstanding player, and it's easy to see a bright future for him. One thing concerns me, though... Something you might call "

by Aaron Gleeman March 19, 2004 After losing Jason Giambi Miguel Tejada and Keith Foulke to free agency over the last few years, the Oakland A's locked up one of their stars yesterday, signing Eric Chavez to a 6-year contract extension worth $66 million. Any time a small-market team signs a player to this type of a contract, it is interesting. This deal is especially noteworthy because of those players the A's haven't re-signed in recent years. The question that I think comes up immediately is "Why Eric Chavez?"
