Orlando can be seen at all the key Latin jazz concerts up and down the West Coast as part of his function as the Giants' Community Relations Ambassador. This year Orlando was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame owing to a career that included many honors - Rookie of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, and countless visits to the All-Star Game. Needless to say, Orlando Cepeda, Puerto Rican by birth, has earned a distinction few baseballs players can hope to achieve. Recently

The baseball appetites
By Kevin Hunsanger
AS FOOD TOWNS go, San Francisco is one of the finest, so it should come as no surprise that SBC Park, home of our San Francisco Giants, is widely regarded as the ball yard with the best dining in the major leagues. Now that another fresh season is upon us, and last year's World Series title means less than a can of beans, new fans and old are bringing their appetites to the expanding China Basin district and SBC Park. And with the debut of the Padres' brand-new PetCo Park in San Diego, the Giants, with their storied northern California home-field advantage, find themselves with much to defend in 2004. What follows, then, is a rough guide to "The Miracle on Third Street," where for the price of a $10 standing-room-only ticket everyone gains access to Bay Area delights – some of which may involve witnessing another Barry Bonds milestone, but all of which will feed your love of the game. Another bonus to the Acme experience is a private entrance to the park, which can cut waiting-in-line time down to nothing (although don't tell anyone else I told you about it). But maybe you saved your appetite for peanuts and Cracker Jack (or at SBC, sugar-coated roasted Diamond walnuts and Gordon Biersch garlic fries). Or maybe instead of a martini, you're all about having a beer in the bleachers (SBC offers 30 beers, including standout pints of Guinness at Murphy's Irish Pub near the famous "SplashCam" of Section 302). So come on, then: get your ticket punched, find your seats before the first pitch

"All his well-known civic and charitable good deeds, his reputation as a clean player, were shoved into the pot to counterbalance the charge, made by Jose Canseco, that Canseco had injected Palmeiro with steroids on many occasions when they were teammates. Canseco wrote the accusation in a book. Then he swore to it before Congress. And Palmeiro denied it utterly, sitting just a few feet from Canseco."
"Of all the players in baseball, the least likely man to be caught cheating with steroids this season would be Palmeiro, right? Even if he had used them every day of his career, he would stop now, because anyone in their right mind would cease and desist."
"Yet, in one of the most unexpected announcements ever made in baseball, Palmeiro has been caught, suspended and has actually admitted to using steroids this season. Palmeiro simply claims that he has no idea how they got in his body." 8-05

THE 2001 SEASON OPENS IN PUERTO RICO
by James Floto What a day, what a day. The first regular season Major League game ever played in Puerto Rico was played today. It was a day never to be forgotten by the people of Puerto Rico, who adopted the theme "The Day of Puerto Rican Pride" for the occasion. The only downside was that yesterday's 14-8 exhibition game slugfest was a much more exciting game than today's one-sided 8-1 Toronto victory over Texas. But it was a great spectacle, nonetheless. Here are some of the highlights: The game was held at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. Hiram Bithorn was the first Puerto Rican to play in the majors. He played with the Chicago Cubs during World War Two, compiling a lifetime 34-31 record, peaking with an 18-12 1943 season. A big, burly guy, he also lead the NL that year with 7 shutouts and a 2.60 ERA. He spent 1944 and '45 in the military, where his weight ballooned to 225 pounds, hurting his chances for a post war comeback. He kicked around the Caribbean after that, and was shot to death on January 1, 1952, when he was playing in the Mexican winter league. A nice looking modern ballpark, Bithron Stadium was nearly full today, with a crowd of 19,891. It is a small bandbox of a stadium, measuring 313 feet down the right field line, 315 down the left. Reminiscent of Wrigley Field, when the wind is blowing in, it's hard for fly balls to get any lift. When the breeze is blowing out, the home runs fly. The wind was definitely a factor in today's game, as several players were robbed of homers, while extra base hits were reduced to singles or fly ball outs. On the other hand, the wind turned several flies into adventures for the outfielders.

Little did he know, however, that his grandfather actually played with Cepeda. Paul Johnston looked at the bobblehead doll and memories of the 1955 season ran through his mind.
He ran his fingers across the red, white, and navy blue uniform that the Salem team wore that year, with block letters across the front. It was the last baseball uniform Paul would wear, and it was one of his favorites.
Johnston pitched for Salem 50 years ago this summer on the first Appalachian League team to play at Salem Kiwanis Field, which was then Municipal Field. Cepeda, a future big league Hall of Famer, played 26 games with that team, which went on to win the Appalachian League title.
Both were inducted into baseball Hall of Fames, as Johnston is a member of the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame. Cepeda, of course, went on to have a brilliant major league career and is a member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY San Francisco Giants Baseball History San Francisco Giants, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the West Division of the National League (NL). The Giants play at Pacific Bell Park. The team played in New York City until 1958 and was originally called the Gothams, after one of that city’s many nicknames. The Giants wear uniforms of orange, black, and white.
Founded in 1883, the Giants organization is one of the oldest in major league baseball. Also one of the most celebrated, the organization holds a major league record with 47 members in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Seven future Hall of Fame members played for the 1924 pennant-winning club, including the entire infield.
Over the decades, Giants greats have included outfielders Bobby and Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, and Mel Ott; infielders Orlando Cepeda, Willie McCovey, Johnny Mize, and Bill Terry; and pitchers Carl Hubbell, Juan Marichal, Christy Mathewson, and Gaylord Perry. Led by such legendary managers as Leo Durocher and John McGraw, the franchise has won five World Series championships, the last being in 1954.
When the Giants finished the 1932 season in last place, tensions erupted between McGraw and his players. McGraw named the slugging first baseman and 1930 league MVP Bill Terry to take over as player-manager in 1933. Terry guided the Giants to a World Series victory that year with help from home-run hitting outfielder Mel Ott and league-leading pitcher Carl Hubbell, both part of the talented team built by McGraw. In 1936 and 1937 Terry again led the Giants to pennant victories, but the team fell in the World Series before the new dominant power in major league baseball—the New York Yankees.

SERRANO SALUTES PUERTO RICAN BASEBALL STAR FOR INDUCTION INTO THE HALL OF FAME
Cepeda is the second Puerto Rican elected to the Hall of Fame, behind baseball legend Roberto Clemente who was admitted in 1973. “I am thrilled that Orlando Cepeda is in the Hall of Fame, because he deserves it!,” Serrano said. “Cepeda has been waiting for this for so long... I am very proud of him and I know this means a lot to him,” Serrano added. Serrano called Cepeda at his San Francisco home hours before the official announcement. “I wanted to wish him luck. While he was waiting for the Veterans Committee’s decision, he was calm but at the same time extremely excited,” Serrano said, adding, “This is indeed a great day for him and for all of the baseball community.” Cepeda, 61 and who was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, played 17 major league seasons. He remains the only player unanimously selected as both the Rookie of the Year in 1958 and the National League Most Valuable Player with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1967. Cepeda, nicknamed “Baby Bull” and “Cha-Cha”, hit .297 with 379 career home runs and 1,365 RBI. He hit better than .300 in nine seasons and hit at least 25 homers eight times. Cepeda’s father, Pedro, was called “The Bull” and also the “Babe Ruth of Puerto Rico.”
