PR HERALD
Serrano Salutes Puerto Rican Baseball Star for Induction into the Hall of Fame
March 2, 1999
Washington, D.C. Congressman Jose E. Serrano (D-NY) today praised Puerto Rican baseball star Orlando Manuel Cepeda on his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Cepeda is the second Puerto Rican elected to the Hall of Fame, behind baseball legend Roberto Clemente who was admitted in 1973. "I am thrilled that Orlando Cepeda is in the Hall of Fame, because he deserves it!," Serrano said. "Cepeda has been waiting for this for so long... I am very proud of him, and I know this means a lot to him," Serrano added. Serrano called Cepeda at his San Francisco home hours before the officialannouncement. "I wanted to wish him luck. While he was waiting for theVeterans Committee's decision, he was calm but at the same time extremely excited," Serrano said, adding, "This is indeed a great day for him and for all of the baseball community." Cepeda, 61 and who was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, played 17 major league seasons. He remains the only player unanimously selected as both the Rookie

Chicago Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda will make a bittersweet journey to his native Puerto Rico this weekend when the Giants visit San Juan to play three games against the Montreal Expos. The news that his first major-league team would make the trek brought mixed feelings. "I was very pleased," Cepeda said, "but I was also sad because when I played ball, Pittsburgh came to San Juan with Roberto Clemente, and the Yankees visited, too. I thought that someday I could come to my country and play ball with the Giants. Unfortunately, it never happened." The flailing Giants open a three-game series against Dusty Baker and the Cubs at Wrigley Field tonight, then embark on the 2,000-mile journey to San Juan, where the Expos have played a portion of their schedule for the past two seasons because of poor attendance in Montreal. The games will be played at 19,000-seat Hiram Bithorn Stadium, named for a pioneering Puerto Rican baseball player, a place Cepeda knows well. He played winter ball there, for the Santurce Crabbers, from 1962 to 1975. He had to do so.

Historical Hot Stove by Bruce Markusen Previous Columns Cooperstown Confidential Regular Season Edition Re-Living The Red Sox And Yankees respectfully and professionally Thinking About The Baby Bull One of the pleasures of working at the National Baseball Hall of Fame is the opportunity to meet and interview legendary players from a wide range of eras. Among the most accommodating and down-to-earth members of Cooperstown’s shrine is Orlando Cepeda, whom I first met circa 1997 at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst as part of a special course on baseball history. Orlando presided as the class’ guest speaker that day, discussing the difficulties that Latin American players of his era faced in making the transition to playing ball in the United States. In conversing with Orlando that afternoon and evening, I gained an appreciation for a man who had succeeded in turning his life around, after a series of personal problems, some self-inflicted and some caused by the racism of others. In the mid-1970s, Cepeda found himself at rock bottom, addicted to illegal drugs, involved in drug trafficking, his marriage in ruins, and his days controlled by the rules of a federal prison. Now, some 25 years later, Cepeda has re-made himself, in large part because of a religious conversion that saw him become dedicated to the practice of Buddhism. He’s now a respected member of the baseball community, a full-fledged Hall of Famer who finally gained the approval of the Veterans Committee, and a man dedicated to imploring youngsters not to repeat the same mistakes that threw his own life into shambles.

Historical Hot Stove
Featured Book (click cover for info)
Search Now: Fund Raiser: Order Merchandise! Historical Hot Stove by Bruce Markusen Previous Columns A Trade of MVPs In the spring of 1972, the Oakland A’s had viewed McLain as insurance against the continuing holdout of 1971 Cy Young Award winner and Most Valuable Player Vida Blue. “When you don’t have your big starter in camp, and it’s been open for two weeks,” explained A’s manager Dick Williams, “you’ve got to take action.” The A’ s surrendered a pair of pitching prospects in the deal, sending young right-handers Jim Panther and Don Stanhouse (of “Stan the Man Unusual” and “Full Pack” fame) to the Texas Rangers for McLain, who had struggled to a 10-22 record with Washington in 1971. Although McLain had lost more games than any other American League pitcher the previous summer, the A’s held out hope that the portly right-hander still possessed some of the vast ability that had made him a 31-game winner for the Detroit Tigers in 1968. McLain, still only 27 years old, was only four years removed from one of the most dominant seasons in recent pitching history. McLain reported to the A’s, joining the club in Phoenix, Arizona, where the team’s spring training hotel was located. As he relaxed by the hotel pool on his first day with the team, a reporter from ABC television approached McLain in an effort to record his reaction to the trade. The volatile right-hander yelled at the reporter and made indirect threats against ABC sportscaster Howard Cosell, who had previously criticized McLain. McLain’s disposition matched his spring training performance. In his first exhibition start for the A’s, a shell-shocked McLain allowed 10 runs on eight hits and six walks. His second start produced more ghastly numbers: seven runs on an explosion of 14 hits. Although McLain had not pitched well for Washington the previous summer, he hadn’t pitched this badly, either.

Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame. Orlando Cepeda was one of the original San Francisco Giants. He made his major league debut at Seals Stadium on April 15, 1958 - opening day of the Giants first year in San Francisco. The "Baby Bull" wasted little time endearing himself to the local fans. In only his second at bat, he hit the major league's first west coast homer. The Giants went on to defeat the rival Dodgers 8-0. Cepeda went on to become one of the most popular Giants of all time. Cepeda was born Sept. 17, 1937 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He came to the U.S. when he was 16, and was assigned to a team in Salem, VA. The day before his first game, he found out his father had died in Puerto Rico. His father was Pedro "Perucho" Cepeda, often called the "Babe Ruth" of Puerto Rican baseball, and was a national hero there. Orlando used his $500 signing bonus to bury his father. Cepeda was a part of the Giants' early focus on Latin players, including Juan Marichal, the Alou brothers, and Jose Pagan. His infectious, cheerful attitude, enthusiasm for the game, and immense talent soon made him a fan favorite.

LATINO JUVENILE BIOGRAPHY AGUIRRE HERO, MENTOR, ROLE MODEL. From an early age, Hank Aguirre was destined to have all three titles. I know this to be true from the stories I have heard of his youth, during which he laid a strong foundation for the rest of his life. At 4 AM, he would make deliveries to the many clients of the "Aguirre Tortillas Factory" in California. These deliveries were made on foot—mostly running—every day of the week, before Hank went to school. The discipline he gained in these workouts prepared him for his journey to the major leagues, where he thrilled many baseball fans with his talent, and sparked dreams of opportunity in the eyes of the children and youths who watched him. Later, as a coach, he shared his knowledge and expertise with many aspiring younger athletes.
