MLB Greatest Players THE 50 GREATEST MLB PLAYERS Steve Carlton After the Series, Carlton joined his team on a trip to Japan. Even though he'd been an All-Star in 1968, the first of his 10 selections, he began experimenting with the slider, which became his signature pitch. His slider, nearly as hard as his fastball, broke down and in late to right handed batters. In 1969, his first year using the pitch, Carlton's ERA dropped by 0.82, his strikeout total jumped by 48 compared to 1968 in roughly the same number of innings, and his win total dimbed from 13 to 17. He highlighted his season on September 15 by striking out 19 New York Mets, only to lose, 4-3, as Ron Swoboda slugged a pair of two-run homers. In 1972 Carlton became the fifth pitcher ever to win 20 games for a last-place team, collecting 27 of the Phillies' 59 victories, a record 45.8 percent! Carlton's 27-10 record included a 15-game winning streak, eight shutouts, and 30 complete games, which was the highest completion total since the 1940's. He won the pitching Triple Crown, leading the NL in wins, ERA, and strikeouts, and also topped the circuit with 346 1/3 innings, the most by a National Leaguer since 1953.

'Silent Steve' Carlton is talking now
By RANDY MILLER phillyBurbs.com LANGHORNE - A wide-eyed young boy, perhaps 12, approached Phillies' royalty. "What's your name?" Hall of Famer Steve Carlton asked. "Who's your favorite Phillies player? You play baseball? You pitch? What's the most you've struck out in a game?" This type of give-and-take went on for almost two hours Saturday afternoon at Oxford Valley Mall, where the legendary pitcher who refused interviews for many so years genuinely seemed to enjoy talking with Phillies fans of all generations during a signing appearance at BC Sports Collectibles. Still lean and looking a young 60, Lefty remains one of a kind. Now living in Durango, Colo., Carlton spends a lot of his time keeping his body and mind in tiptop shape, especially his mind. "I read books," Carlton said. "You've gotta find a way to get out of your own way, so you can progress in life."

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Philadelphia Phillies Baseball History Philadelphia Phillies, professional baseball team, one of five teams in the East Division of the National League (NL). The Phillies play at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and wear uniforms of white and red. The team’s name is the oldest in major league baseball.
Philadelphia’s early teams boasted Baseball Hall of Fame members such as Ed Delahanty, Billy Hamilton, and Sam Thompson, but the franchise failed to win its first NL pennant until 1915, the year infielder Dave Bancroft was a rookie.
Philadelphia became a NL powerhouse in the late 1970s, capturing five division titles from 1976 to 1983, including three straight under Manager Danny Ozark. The Phillies won their first World Series championship in 1980, defeating the Kansas City Royals with a lineup that featured veteran superstars Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt, outfielder Greg Luzinski, and pitchers Steve Carlton and Tug McGraw. Schmidt, who ranks in the top ten on the all-time home run list, won three NL most valuable player (MVP) awards. He also led the league in home runs 8 times, a record surpassed only by the 12 titles of slugger Babe Ruth. Carlton won 329 games and four Cy Young Awards.

What Pitch Counts Hath Wrought
by Steve Treder August 03, 2004 Pat Hentgen of the Blue Jays announced his retirement recently, at the age of 35. We had some discussion about Hentgen and his career over at Baseball Think Factory , and one poster, referring to Hentgen's struggles over the past several years, said something to the effect of, "Hentgen's career is a great lesson in what 260-inning seasons will do to a pitcher." The assumption that 260 innings in a season is an unbearable workload for nearly every modern starting pitcher is very commonly held these days. The developers and promoters of the
