Carlton, the enigma of MLB

"Sometimes they say the world rotates a little different for lefthanders. And Lefty was a good example of that. From time to time we still sit down and have dinner - and I still don't understand what he talks about," says Joe Torre on ESPN Classic's Sports Century series. Steve Carlton let his pitching do his interviews for him. On the mound he was "Lefty," a lean southpaw with a nearly untouchable slider. To baseball fans and the media, he was Garbo in spikes, a mysterious figure who seldom offered words for public consumption. Carlton's silence extended for most of his 24 seasons, during which time he compiled a 329-244 record with a 3.22 ERA and 4,136 strikeouts. Only Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson have struck out more batters. Trying to hit Carlton was "like trying to drink coffee with a fork," Hall of Famer Willie Stargell said. Carlton spent most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, making the Hall of Fame in 1994 on his first time on the ballot. He finished with the second-highest win total among lefthanders, behind only Warren Spahn, and as the first four-time Cy Young Award winner. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Carlton was selected to 10 All-Star teams and ranks as the Phillies' all-time leader in victories, starts and strikeouts. The first pitcher to strike out 19 in nine innings, Carlton had his best seasons in Philadelphia, from 1972-86, after being traded from the Cardinals. Five of his six 20-win seasons came with the Phillies.

His 1972 performance earned him the Hickok Belt as top professional athlete of the year. His having won 46% of his team's victories is a record in modern major league history. Carlton attributed his success to his grueling training regime, which included Eastern

And the irony is that they wrote better without access to my quotes.
Steve Carlton

Auggie Busch traded me to the last-place Phillies over a salary dispute ($5,000). I was mentally committed to winning 25 games with the Cardinals and now I had to re-think my goals. I decided to stay with the 25-win goal and won 27 of the Phillies 59 victories. I consider that season my finest individual achievement.
Steve Carlton

But I would say basically, I would just like to be remembered for what I did on the field.

Everything I was, physically and mentally, that's what I put on that field.

Hopefully, Pete will be reinstated by Baseball and he will have his rightful place in baseball history, a plaque in the Hall of Fame. Steve Carlton I don't get involved. Steve Carlton I hold my slider this way, directly along the seam so that it feels like I am holding the ouside third of the ball. Steve Carlton I realized after going through the interview that I don't want to be in baseball.

He thrived on the mound by physically and mentally challenging himself off the field. His out-pitch, a hard, biting slider complemented a great fastball. He won 329 games — second only to Warren Spahn among lefties — and his 4,136 strikeouts are exceeded only by Nolan Ryan. "Lefty" once notched 19 strikeouts in a game, compiled six 20-win seasons, and was the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards. Fee Range: Please contact us for fee info
After the Series, Carlton joined his team on a trip to Japan. Even though he'd been an All-Star in 1968, the first of his 10 selections, he began experimenting with the slider, which became his signature pitch. His slider, nearly as hard as his fastball, broke down and in late to right handed batters. In 1969, his first year using the pitch, Carlton's ERA dropped by 0.82, his strikeout total jumped by 48 compared to 1968 in roughly the same number of innings, and his win total dimbed from 13 to 17. He highlighted his season on September 15 by striking out 19 New York Mets, only to lose, 4-3, as Ron Swoboda slugged a pair of two-run homers.

Steve Carlton, Baseball Player
It was a milestone that very few pitchers achieved and at that time assured you of election to the Hall of Fame. I never think about who I'm facing; all I think about is winning. Steve Carlton Carlton was not your normal guy. Communicating with him was not always easy. On the mound, he would tune out all distractions. Off the mound, he did the same. If he considered you the distraction, he'd direct at you an icy stare. Teammates considered him to be a recluse. He hated to sign autographs. He refused to talk to reporters for long stretches at a time. He was devoted to the martial arts. He studied Far East religions. He was a wine connoisseur. He pissed people off with his stand-offishness and arrogance. Carlton was also the finest left handed pitcher of his generation. In a career that would last twenty-four years, he would win 329 games, ninth all-time, with an ERA of 3.22. His 4,136 strikeouts were second all-time only to Nolan Ryan. Unfortunately, most of his career was not spent in St. Louis but rather in Philadelphia. Peter Golenbock
