Career Pitching Record A fitness fanatic, Carlton trained by practicing kung fu, doing isometric exercises, and developing strength in his hands by working them in buckets of rice. It worked for him: The 6-foot-4, 210-pound left-hander became the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards. After pitching briefly for the NL's St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 and 1966, Carlton became a regular starter in 1967. It was the first of 17 seasons in which he made more than 30 starts. In 1968, Carlton added a nasty slider to an excellent fastball and fine control. His first 20-victory season came in 1971, when he had a 20-9 record. His reward was a trade to the Philadelphia Phillies. Known simply as "Lefty" by his teammates, Carlton won his first Cy Young Award in Philadelphia in 1972, compiling a 27-10 record for a last-place team that won only 59 games. He led the NL in victories and in complete games with 30, innings pitched with 346, strikeouts with 310, and ERA with 1.97. Carlton's performance won him a $167,000 salary, the highest ever for a pitcher at the time. After three sub-par seasons, he led the NL with a .741 winning percentage on a 20-7 record in 1976, then claimed his second Cy Young Award in 1977, when he led in victories with a 23-10 record.

Carlton enjoyed immediate success in St. Louis, posting winning records and reaching the World Series in 1967 and Following a salary dispute, Carlton was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies before the season for pitcher Rick Wise . Carlton's first season with the Phillies was among the greatest seasons a pitcher has ever had, as he won 27 games despite playing for a team whose final record was 59-97. His 1972 performance earned him the Hickok Belt as top professional athlete of the year. His having won 46% of his team's victories is a record in modern major league history. Carlton attributed his success to his grueling training regime, which included Eastern martial arts techniques, the most famous of which was doing exercises while immersed in a vat of rice. He was perhaps the most physically fit baseball player of his time.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.
I'm going to list the players on the top 2 Tiers from before, plus Murray and Carter (Total: 82). Please make a full list of 40 players you consider the greatest or most Hall worthy.

Baseball Fever Baseball Almanac / Baseball Fever Website Web Improvements and Site Ideas PDA View Full Version : Ned Garver? how about Steve Carlton! steve 03-10-2001, 06:04 PM 'tis true that Garver won 20 games when his team lost 102. But Carlton's feat seems far more impressive: 27 wins on a team that went 59-97. In the era that Carlton pitched, the fact that he can rack up 46% of the 1972 Phillies' wins is ridiculous!!
The more I look at Carlton's stats for that year, the more amazed I am. Where do you think this ranks amongst the greatest pitched seasons of all time The Commissioner 03-10-2001, 08:12 PM Excellent point. I'm pretty sure that the webmaster was either simply answering an e-mail request with Garver or just pointing out that he is the only pitcher to win 20 for a team that lost 100 without rendering any commentary on how that stacked up against other pitchers' relative greatness. I guess it would be a matter of opinion as to which feat is more impressive. Just to add fuel to the debate, here is a list of other 20 win pitchers for last place clubs:
