Unless you've been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you've heard about Jose Canseco, aka King Rat (at least in the eyes of his fellow professional athletes).
The former Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, six-time all-star, and poster boy for better living through science, returns from his absence in the limelight with JUICED: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, And How Baseball Got Big, a tell-all that names names in an attempt to give steroids a positive spin. Even the dust-jacket features a shirtless Jose, flexing for the camera, smilingly proud that he's pulled off something on everyone: fans, front offices, even the President of the United States (George W. Bush was at one time president of the Texas Rangers when Canseco was a member of that team).
Baseball's reputation as a clean sport was already suffering a black eye from steroid allegations on some of its high-profile players such as Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield. But Canseco goes further, mentioning other teammates, including single-season home run king Mark McGwire, casting aspersions on the legitimacy of his record.

Regan Books/HarperCollins, 284 pp., $25.95 During the 1990s the game was far from at its best. On Aug. 19, 1994, unable to agree on a contract, baseball players went on strike, canceling the rest of the season. Attendance fell in '95, but fans began to return in record numbers as the new millennium approached. In 1998, two "good guys," Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, waged a seasonlong assault on Roger Maris' 61-in-'61 homer record. Both broke it easily, McGwire with 70, Sosa, 66. These facts are part of recent baseball history. Here is another version:
McGwire and Sosa brought the game of baseball back to life. People were as excited about baseball as they had ever been. And why? Because the owners had been smart enough not to chase steroid use out of the game, allowing guys like McGwire

Don't let your browser block Google Ads between these arrows Don't let your browser block Google Ads between these arrows March 17, 2005 Major League Baseball Congressional hearings, chemical steroids, political steroids, moral steroids, Mark McGuire, Curt Schilling, Jose Canseco, and so-on. In baseball, as in life, too few of us i.e we not just they ) live up the the standards we want for those who serve (wittingly or not) as "role models" for our children. Some of us try harder than others, but all of us fail. Some famous athletes (and most "celebrities") complain that it's "not fair" to demand that they behave as "role models." Life's not fair, and such complaint falls like a whimpering whisper on the drums of my hears hardened by the roar of self-indulgent, narcissistic celebrity. Too few great athletes exhibit great moral responsibility on a par with their athletic prowess. For me, Cal Ripken represents the Gold Standard. If there are "moral steroids," he must have taken them. We can't expect everyone to be "Cal Ripken," but we can expect, and should demand (as consumers) that those to whose athletic prowess or celebrity status we pay financial homage are at least trying not to offend our values. Are there many who fail to sink to the lowest standards? Of course. It's unjustifiable to imply that "most" baseball players (or most professional athletes) use steroids, commit crimes, or behave in other forms of patently offensive conduct. However, it is fair to judge the rest by how, and to what extent, they use their own celebrity to combat the abuses by others of the privileges celebrity brings.

Jose Canseco on steroids: C'mon, everyone's doing it
By Andrew Nackman Published: Wednesday, February 23, 2005 Whether he intended to or not, Jose Canseco's book entitled "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big," released on Mon., Feb. 14, has greatly helped the game of baseball. In his book the former major league slugger claims that 80 percent of major league players have taken steroids and calls out former teammates, including Ivan Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, Juan Gonzalez and St. Louis's own Mark McGwire. While there is no way to know if all of his claims are in fact truth, (he also strongly believes that Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds and Bret Boone, among others, are steroids users) these allegations bring further attention to the issue that threatens the credibility of the sport, while forcing major league baseball owners and the players' union to lay down strict rules for the future. In the past two weeks, Canseco has been interviewed by Mike Wallace on CBS's popular news magazine "60 Minutes," his allegations have been featured on ESPN's "Sportscenter," and the book itself finished third on Amazon.com's best-seller's list on its first day. The book and its accusations are adding to the negative image already overshadowing the Major League. This offseason, Major League Baseball has been hit hard by the BALCO investigations, which revealed separate testimonies from Jason Giambi and Barry Bonds in which they admitted to taking forms of anabolic steroids. Subsequently, the owners and players' union agreed to a more stringent steroid policy, suspending all first-time offenders for ten days and implementing year-round random testing. Despite these marginal improvements, more can be done.

I'm not a psychologist and I don't play one on TV but you don't have to have a PhD to recognize that one of the driving motivations behind Jose Canseco's book Juiced was both his jealousy of Mark McGwire and his feeling of being screwed over by a double standard in baseball that has one set of criteria for white players and a second set for players of color.
Now in full disclosure - I never thought of Canseco as a player of color (I know it is a ridiculous phrase but I'm working with the material Canseco gave me). I never thought of Canseco as a player of color until after he "retired" and started complaining that he was being blackballed because he's Cuban.
I should also note that I've never been a fan of Canseco. Even when he was with the Red Sox I looked at him as more of a sideshow than anything. I even went out of my way not to buy his book because I was brought up old school where snitches are personas non grata. Instead of buying it, I read his book at my local bookstore that has a cafe. Now three sittings and about a dozen coffees later (free refills), I'm much more sympathetic to Canseco.

Well, Mr. 40/40 is about to release his tell-all book "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big,"
Canseco writes that he personally injected Mark McGwire with steroids and that he saw McGwire and Jason Giambi inject each other, according to the paper.
In his book, Canseco also writes that President Bush "had to have been aware" of rampant steroid use on the Texas Rangers when he owned the club in the early 1990s, the Daily News reported.
White House press secretary Scott McClellan said he spoke to Bush about alleged steroid use.
"If there was, he was not aware of it at the time," McClellan said.
Canseco claims he introduced the performance enhancers to Rafael Palmeiro, Ivan Rodriguez, and Juan Gonzalez when he joined the Rangers in 1992.
Rodriguez and Gonzalez said that they had not seen the book and declined comment. Palmeiro denied using steroids in a statement Monday.
Canseco hit 462 home runs in a major league career between 1985 and 2001. He played seven full seasons for the A's before being traded to Texas in '92. He also played for Boston, the Yankees, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Oakland again, and the White Sox.

RSS Just to clarify, Jose Canseco is an opportunistic lout and all-around lowlife. He squandered away the bulk of a Hall of Fame-potential career and now is selling out his former teammates in a desperate stab at a quick buck and another 30 minutes of fame. But here's the scary part: As sleazy as Canseco is, and as distasteful as his motives may be, you simply can't dismiss his latest round of outrageous accusations out of hand. Not anymore. Canseco injecting McGwire in the buttocks in the bathroom stall, as detailed in the New York Daily News and on "60 Minutes"? McGwire injecting Jason Giambi? Canseco introducing steroids to teammates Juan Gonzalez, Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez while all were on the Texas Rangers? And the latest round of allegations in early bootleg copies of his book, implicating players from Roger Clemens to Bret Boone? Pathetically, all the titillating, damning stuff in his upcoming book, "War and ... Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids, period. I do not know how to say it any more clearly than that never. The reference to me in Mr. Canseco's book is absolutely false. I am against the use of steroids.
Baltimore Oriole first baseman,Rafael Palmeiro, testifying before Congress March 17, 2005, on allegations he used steriods. In this season where he joined the all-time greats in the 3,000 career hits club, today he was suspended for violating Major League Baseball's steroids policy.
