Jose Canseco, Hero?
Opinion BEFORE I start arguing that it's muddleheaded, and misses the point, to disparage the greatness of a baseball player for his want of goodness as a man before I rise to the defense of Jose Canseco let me begin by offering one example of my own muddleheadedness in this regard. A big part of what I have always admired about Roberto Clemente as a ballplayer is what a good, strong, thoughtful man he seems to have been his stoic dignity in the face of ignorance and bigotry, how he died in a crash while flying to help the victims of a Nicaraguan earthquake, and so forth. I choose to view Clemente's grace on the field as reflecting and being reflected by the graceful way in which he conducted his public life (when one has demonstrably nothing to do with the other), and both together as lasting proof of some private gracefulness as a man, when I have no way of ever really knowing what form the true, secret conduct of his life may have taken. I have no idea what Clemente's feelings would have been about performance enhancers like anabolic steroids, but I would like to think that he would have viewed them with disfavor, and that he was faithful to his wife, temperate in his habits and modest about his accomplishments. Yes, I would like to think that because, instinctively, I'm just foolish and mistaken enough to think that great baseball players must also be good men.

Jose Canseco has never been this dangerous. In his just-released book " Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big ," the former Oakland A's Most Valuable Player is hawking an insider look on how steroids dominate training regimens in Major League Baseball. On the face of it, this is old, musty news. Players like the late Ken Caminiti have revealed that as many as fifty percent of players "juice" more than a Schwarzenegger family picnic. Baseball stars Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield, and Jason Giambi have all admitted use - knowingly or unknowingly - in the ongoing Bay Area Lab (BALCO) investigation. Canseco also proudly confesses his own use. As his publisher Harper-Collins states, he "made himself a guinea pig of the performance-enhancing drugs" and "mixed, matched and experimented to such a degree that he became known throughout the league as 'The Chemist.'" But Canseco's book is radical because he goes beyond the individual choices of players and pulls back the curtain on all of Major League Baseball. After the 1994 lockout, Major League Baseball's owners were worried about plummeting fan interest and stadium attendance. Led by commissioner Bud Selig, according to Canseco, they looked the other way - and even encouraged - steroid use for heightened performance. He also makes the case that the powerful MLB Players Union deliberately ignored the issue, believing that more homers would mean bigger contracts.

One of the most electrifying and controversial athletes ever to step onto the baseball diamond shares the untold story of his rise to fame and fall from grace, including a never-before-seen look behind the curtains into the history, dangers, truths, and lies about baseball's dark secret: steroids. When Jose Canseco burst into the Major Leagues in the 1980s, he changed the sport in more ways than one. No player before him possessed his mixture of speed and power, which allowed him to become the first man in history to belt more than forty home runs and swipe more than forty bases in the same season. He won Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and a World Series ring. Today, this issue has crept out of the closet and burst into the headlines as players balloon to herculean proportions and hundred-year-old records are not only broken, but also demolished. In this shocking memoir, Canseco sheds light on a life of dizzying highs and debilitating lows, provides the answers to questions about steroids that millions of fans are only now beginning to ask and suggests that, far from being a passing trend, the steroid revolution is only a taste of things to come.

Outfield/Designated Hitter
As one of the "Bash Brothers" in Oakland, Jose Canseco was a feared slugger. He came out swinging in 1986, slugging 33 home runs with 117 RBI on his way to being named the Rookie of the Year in the American League. Just two years later, Canseco won the Most Valuable Player Award as he became the first player in baseball history with more than 40 homers and 40 stolen bases in the same season while hitting .307, a career high and one of only two full seasons over the .300 mark. Injuries began to take their toll in 1989, a problem which Canseco has not been able to overcome in his 16-year career. He has been awarded the Silver Slugger three times in his career, and has been to six All-Star games. With 446 lifetime home runs and 1358 RBI to his credit, Canseco is probably only two healthy seasons away from the 500/1500 plateau, a milestone that would undoubtedly lead to residence in Cooperstown one day.

JOSE CANSECO CLAIMS SAMMY SOSA AND MARK McGWIRE TOOK STEROIDS DURING 1998 HOME RUN CHASE ON XM SATELLITE RADIO'S MLB HOME PLATE CHANNEL; PETE ROSE TELLS XM HE SUSPECTS CANSECO MOTIVATED BY MONEY
Washington D.C., February 15, 2005 Former baseball slugger Jose Canseco claimed that both Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire took steroids during their famed home-run chase in 1998 during an exclusive interview with Kevin Kennedy, who managed Canseco while he was a Texas Ranger, on the first day of broadcasting for XM Satellite Radio's MLB Home Plate channel (XM Channel 175). In a separate interview on MLB Home Plate, baseball veteran Pete Rose criticized Canseco for his accusations of steroid use among former teammates, saying, "No one needs the money that bad to capitalize on your teammates." An encore broadcast of the Canseco interview will be aired on XM Channel 175 tonight at 9 pm ET and again at 12 midnight ET. The interview originally aired live on XM at 4:30 pm ET during the program "The Show," hosted by Kennedy and former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Rob Dibble. Canseco, the author of the controversial new book "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big," claimed that he was forced out of baseball by league executives who had previously "turned a blind eye" to steroid use, then decided to make him an example to other players.

Jeff Mordock Hall of Fame Editor's Note: The following article received lots of feedback from knowledgeable baseball fans. Please read their comments for additional points of view and some corrections to the numbers. You can also email Jeff at directly JMordock@baseballguru.com with any new comments.] NO WAY, JOSE by Jeff Mordock
Yesterday (May 14, 2002) was not only the last day of Jose Canseco's controversial career. It was also the first day of his controversial Hall of Fame candidacy. If preliminary debates are any indication, this could develop into one of baseball's greatest controversies. ESPN.com polled 69,058 readers and found that 49.3% believe Canseco should be enshrined in Cooperstown, compared to 50.6% who say, "no." The real question is not "Should Canseco be enshrined in the Hall of Fame?" but rather, "What is wrong with the 49.3% who believe he belongs there?" Advocates can argue that he hit 462 home runs, knocked in 1,407 runs, earned both MVP and Rookie of the Year awards, and inaugurated the 40 homer/40 steal club. But those gaudy power numbers overshadow a career that was nothing but wasted potential. During Canseco's 16 full seasons, only his 1988 campaign can truly be considered a dominant season. He only produced two other seasons (1990 and 1991) that can even be viewed as productive. The other 13 seasons were injury-plagued with mediocre power numbers for the live ball era. Canseco exceeded 130 games only six times in his career, making him a part-time player for more than nearly two-thirds of his career. After capturing the MVP award in 1988, Canseco placed among the top 10 in MVP votes during one other season. Ozzie Smith and Bill Mazeroski are the only modern-era Hall of Famers who finished with less top ten MVP finishes, but at least they have 21 Gold Gloves between them. Canseco's value to a team was so trivial that two last place organizations (1997 A's and 2000 Devil Rays) couldn't wait to dump him.
