JOSE CANSECO
At the age of 23, Cuban-born Canseco became the first player in big league history to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in the same season. For his historic effort, the right-handed slugger with the sculpted physique earned the American League Most Valuable Player Award. With Mark McGwire he formed the "Bash Brothers," a powerful home-run-hitting duo that helped the Oakland A's to three straight pennants. In his skin-tight uniform and with his often bizarre self-promoting behavior, Canseco managed to grab headlines in each of the four cities where he hit at least 30 homers in a season, as well as the four in which he didn't. In the end, he found himself out of the game at the age of 36, with 462 homers and more than 1,400 RBI to his credit. Unable to reconcile the fact that injuries, a high salary, and a bad attitude had sealed his fate, Canseco lashed out at baseball, promising to write a tell-all book that would "tear apart the game," name players who used steroids, and reveal the conspiracy that he felt resulted in his blacklisting.

Career Batting Record Canseco played high school baseball in Miami and was chosen by the AL's Oakland Athletics in the 1982 free-agent draft. He joined the major league team late in the 1985 season and was named the league's rookie of the year by The Sporting News and the Baseball Writers Association of America in 1986, his first full season, when he batted only .240 but hit 33 home runs and had 117 RBI. At 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, Canseco was tremendously strong and hit some mammoth home runs. An opposing player once said of him, "He'll hit the ball, and you'll say there's no way anybody can hit anything that far. Then he'll hit one farther." Despite his size, he was also very fast. In 1988, Canseco became the first player to hit 40 or more home runs and steal 40 or more bases in the same season. His 42 home runs and 124 RBI led the league, and he had a career high .307 batting average to win the AL's most valuable player award. An injury limited him to just 65 games in 1989, but he came back with 37 home runs and 101 RBI in 1990, then led the league in home runs for a second time with 44 in 1991, when he had 122 RBI.

Jose Canseco was arrested Tuesday on charges he and his brother got into a nightclub fight that left one man with a broken nose and another needing 20 stitches in his lip. The baseball star was charged with two counts of aggravated battery in the Halloween night scuffle. His twin brother, Ozzie, was charged with one count. Canseco said he was at the club with his brother and three women when a man grabbed the player's date inappropriately and became aggressive. Canseco said another man approached his brother, who pushed him back, touching off the fight. "I know that my brother and myself were definitely victims and the girl I was with got sexually assaulted," Jose Canseco said. "We got attacked. We are the victims here. We just defended ourselves." The brothers were taken to Miami-Dade County Jail on Tuesday night and were expected to post bond. One man's nose was broken and the other needed 20 stitches to his lip, Miami Beach Police Detective Bobby Hernandez said. "This started as a verbal altercation. And then the two Canseco brothers basically beat these guys up, putting them in the hospital," Hernandez said.

Sep. 19, 1967- Baseball player. Jim Abbott is one of an elite group of major-league pitchers to have thrown a no-hitter, a feat he accomplished while he was a New York Yankee in 1993. Abbott, who began the 1995 season as a member of the Chicago White Sox and ended it as a California Angel, is also among the few hurlers whose fastballs have been clocked at over ninety miles an hour. What makes his success all the more remarkable is the fact that he plays ball without a right hand. He was born with a rounded stub at the end of his right arm, with one small, finger-like protrusion where his right hand should be. He pitches with his left hand, with the palm of his glove resting on the stub. After each pitch, he quickly switches the glove to his left hand, so that he can catch or field balls thrown or hit back. Prior to becoming a major-league pitcher, Abbott was an Olympic gold medalist, a collegiate baseball all-star, and a high-school standout in three sports. Abbott's athletic achievements have amazed sports fans and inspired countless numbers of Americans with disabilities, who flock to ballparks to see him pitch. He receives hundreds of letters a week, many of them from handicapped children and their parents, and he tries to answer as many as he can, even though he has never considered himself to be disabled. "I just don't think all of this about me playing with one hand is as big an issue as everyone wants to make it," he told Ira Berkow of the New York Times (December 25, 1992). "I don't try to run from the attention about it; I just accept it." Abbott maintains that the toughest thing he faces is not his disability but major-league hitters. The feeling is apparently mutual. "He's got the hand that counts," Larry Sheets of the Baltimore Orioles told a reporter for the Washington Post (April 26, 1989) after facing Abbott's power pitching for the first time.

Jose: You're out! In explosive tell-all, Canseco dishes on steroid users BY MICHAEL O'KEEFFE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
You've never seen Jose Canseco like this: huddled in a bathroom stall at the Oakland Coliseum, jabbing a hypodermic needle into Mark McGwire's bare behind. Or McGwire and a young Jason Giambi heading into the men's room to inject each other with the anabolic steroids that would turn them from lanky lads into musclebound behemoths. Bad boy Canseco alleges those and other mind-bending scenes in a soon-to-be released tome that is already shaking the world of baseball. In "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits and How Baseball Got Big," Canseco claims he personally injected some of the biggest names in baseball - including All-Stars Rafael Palmeiro, Juan Gonzalez and Ivan Rodriguez, among others - with performance-enhancing drugs. But if the book is a confessional, Canseco isn't seeking redemption. "Juiced" is a love letter to the clear liquids that turned him from struggling skinny prospect to one of the biggest names in the game. The implausibly buff slugger admitted to doping several years ago, but in the book he claims he was almost solely responsible for spreading steroids throughout the game in the 1990s. The book, which is still being edited, is scheduled for release Feb. 21.

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Jose Canseco Mark McGwire
Swollen ex-slugger Jose Canseco lays waste to the game that made him famous in a shocking new book, outing several stars as steroid abusers, the Daily News has learned. The book, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big," published by Regan Books and scheduled to hit bookstores Feb. 21, already is causing a firestorm in baseball circles. Players, agents, union officials and Major League Baseball executives have been burning up the phone lines over the past several days trying to find information about the book's contents. "Hoo boy," one top major league executive said. "This is going to be bad." Canseco apparently dropped the title he told reporters a year ago he would use, "Dare to Truth." The longtime Oakland star, who made a brief appearance with the Yankees in 2000, claims he introduced steroids to the game and injected fellow Bash Brother Mark McGwire in the rear end numerous times in clubhouse bathroom stalls. He also describes watching disgraced Yankee slugger Jason Giambi and McGwire injecting each other when they both played with the Oakland A's, and says he personally taught All-Star and potential Hall of Famers Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro and Juan Gonzalez to use 'roids after he was traded to the Texas Rangers in 1992.

Well, this will separate the Gannons from the Guckerts. Gannon told Newsweek that he is contemplating "suing liberal interest groups, bloggers, and others," for what he termed "political assassination." Don't see that in the statutes anywhere. He is presumably pondering some sort of libel action, or perhaps he harbors some vague hope of proving invasion of privacy. This would, of course, require that what's been said about him isn't true (though he hasn't denied it), and was maliciously published or broadcast by people who knew There certainly do seem to be enough personality elements floating around in there to constitute two separate fellows. Neither of them seems to know a lot about the media, or about communications law. Guckert/Gannon's interview with CNN Friday reflected a fundamental misunderstanding of both - to say nothing of time. Asked if he was using a pseudonym because he was hiding his past, he again insisted that it was simply an issue of having a last name that was difficult for others to pronounce or remember.

Jose Canseco likes talking about steroids. Jose Canseco likes talking about other people who use steroids, and he also likes to laugh at the ones who used them wrong. Jose Canseco likes to laugh at Jason "Moon Face" Giambi. So does everyone else, especially Jose Canseco. Jose Canseco is attracted to beautiful women who take care of their bodies. Jose Canseco does not mind giving grown men a shot in the ass. Jose Canseco is comfortable with his own sexuality, and knows that giving a shot to another man, in the ass, does not, in fact, make him gay. Jose Canseco has had sex with lots of women.
