MLB Greatest Players THE 50 GREATEST MLB PLAYERS Roy Campanella A star with both the bat and glove, Roy Campanella was agile behind the plate, had a rifle arm and was an expert handler of pitchers. He was named National League MVP three times, including a 1953 selection when he set single-season records for catchers with 41 homers and a National League best 142 RBI. Before signing with the Dodgers, the broad-shouldered receiver starred with the Negro National Leagues' Baltimore Elite Giants for seven seasons. His career was cut short by a tragic auto accident prior to the 1958 season. The National League MVP in 1951, 1953, and 1955, Campanella was the second black man approached by Branch Rickey to play major league baseball. He debuted in 1948 and held down the Dodger catching job for a decade, leading the team to five pennants and a World Series title.

HOME TICKETS SCHEDULE PLAYERS ... TEAM HISTORY Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball History Los Angeles Dodgers, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the West Division of the National League (NL). Based in Brooklyn until 1958, the club now plays at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, and wears uniforms of white and blue. During the team’s early years in Brooklyn, players often dodged trolley cars to reach the ballpark, Ebbets Field, leading to the nickname Dodgers. In 1913 the club officially changed its name to the Dodgers.
The Dodgers have won a league or division title in all but one decade—the 1930s—since the 1880s. Only twice in their history have they finished in the basement. With stars such as Roy Campanella, Don Drysdale, Gil Hodges, Sandy Koufax, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, and Maury Wills, the club won ten NL pennants and four World Series championships from 1947 to 1966. During that period, Dodgers’ players captured seven NL most valuable player (MVP) awards, six rookie of the year awards, and five Cy Young Awards.
Los Angeles built powerful teams from 1974 to 1988, winning five NL pennants and two World Series titles. Stars of those teams include Ron Cey, Steve Garvey, Kirk Gibson, Davey Lopes, Don Sutton, and Fernando Valenzuela.

Campanella, one of the five black players signed by Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey before the 1946 season, was the first catcher to break organized baseball's color line. Just 5'9" but solidly built, he had already proven himself as a catcher during nine years in the Negro National League , the winter leagues, and Mexico. In 12 additional seasons, 10 in the majors, he was one of the era's outstanding players, and his leadership and indefatigable enthusiasm made him one of the most popular players in the game.
