Name: Roy Campanella Birth Date: November 19, 1921 Death Date: June 26, 1993 Place of Birth: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America Place of Death: Woodland Hills, California, United States of America Nationality: American Ethnicity: African American Gender: Male Occupations: baseball player Roy Campanella Main Biography Hall of Fame catcher, Roy Campanella (1921-1993), was one of professional baseball's African American pioneers. Playing with Jackie Robinson on the Brooklyn Dodgers, Campanella won three Most Valuable Player awards in a 10-year career that was cut short by a crippling automobile accident. Campanella was one of many stars on the powerful Dodgers teams of the early 1950s, nicknamed "the Boys of Summer." Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Jackie Robinson, and Pee Wee Reese got more attention. But Campanella was the heart and soul of the team, its most valuable player, and an astute handler of the Dodgers pitching staff. Something of an amateur psychologist, he knew when to coddle and when to needle his pitchers. "He was always doing something to help you win a game, whether it was digging out a low pitch, throwing out a baserunner, or hitting a home run," said Dodgers manager, Walt Alston. For his own part, Campanella professed an undying affection for baseball. "It's a man's game, but you hav.....

Roy Campanella
By Dr. Dick Wieder Baseball is one of the great contributions of the American culture, to the joy of living. It is truly an American invention. It exemplifies the heart of the American dream; team effort conquers all and the team is the effort of each individual in concert with the others. In the end, the individual is supreme. This concept built this nation. Baseball is one evidence that the dream works. Watching a baseball game proves we love this dream and believe in it. It refreshes us. It reaffirms our faith in the system. Individual athletes become larger than life. They are role models for the young. We pretended to be our favorite, in those sandlot games of our youth. Yet, many criticize the young for considering "jocks" as heroes. After all, a child should emulate his father, or a great educator, or a scientist. Who are these tobacco-chewing, muscle-bound, stupid jocks to presume that they could provide a positive influence on the young of this country. In my youth, Roy Campanella was my hero. There were others on his team whom I liked, Duke Snider, Gil Hedges, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, Carl Furillo, Preacher Roe, Clem Labine, Joe Black, and Jr. Gilliam, all the old Brooklyn Dodgers. But Roy Campanella stood above them all.

Upon finding out that I was from Toronto, Roy was interested to know about what was happening with the Blue Jays, especially any players that he might know. We talked about baseball in general and things that were happening in both leagues at that particular time.
Below is the photograph I took of him on that day. This may very well be one of the last pictures taken of him during the final few months before his death.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Ultimate J W 07-08-2003, 11:27 AM When I first joined Baseball Fever (aka Baseball Almanac) a few of the older members got together to put divide markers on the field of 189 Major League players in the Hall of Fame (Ozzie Smith had just been elected). They started with the top 40, and voted on their Tiers 40 at a time until they had 29 left at the bottom.
Now that we will be adding Eddie Murray and Gary Carter, I figure it's time to revise the list with the throngs of new posters here.
I also declined making lists last time as I felt I wasn't knowledgeable enough to have an opinion. I'm looking forward to doing it now ;) .
Tier 1 - "The Ultimate"
These are the absolute top MLB players of all time. Record setters, championship leaders, ancient legends and icons fading to glory... they define the history of the sport.
I'm going to list the players on the top 2 Tiers from before, plus Murray and Carter (Total: 82). Please make a full list of 40 players you consider the greatest or most Hall worthy.

Baseball Fever General Baseball Hall of Fame Talk PDA View Full Version : 5 Tier HOF (v.2) - The Elite J W 07-21-2003, 09:07 PM We've voted on the top forty Hall of Famers, from Aaron to Young, in a pretty resolute mannerexactly forty players received over half the vote. Several names were left off without debate (I know I would've had some ammo for Grover Alexander, but them's the breaks). They arrive here.
Tier 2 - "The Elite"
While perhaps not the very best in baseball history, these players were still champions, milestone-makers and outright winners come heck or high water. The franchises they played for could hardly do without them.
I am going to combine the remainders of the last vote with the old 3rd-Tier members, and Addie Joss, who received a write-in 1st-Tier vote. The total is 83; trim it down to 40!

INNING 7: THE CAPITAL OF BASEBALL
Ninety percent of hitting is mental; the other half is physical.
Dodgers fans, October 10, 1955. Photo Credit: National Baseball Hall of Fame Library, Cooperstown, NY The Capital of Baseball celebrates the glorious heyday of New York City baseball, where for ten straight years a local team always played in the World Series and almost always won, while growing postwar economic pressures send old teams in search of new cities. Rare newsreel film and interviews illuminate some of baseball's most memorable moments. Highlights:
  • Manager Casey Stengel rebuilds the Yankee dynasty with switch-hitting slugger Mickey Mantle and the imperturbable talents of Yogi Berra.
Bobby Thomson's "shot heard 'round the world" sets off fireworks at the Polo Grounds, as television carries the action coast-to-coast.
The Negro Leagues fade into history as African-American stars like Willie Mays, Monte Irvin, Roy Campanella, Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson and Henry Aaron follow Jackie Robinson into the majors.
Falling attendance forces many east coast teams to head west, causing the first shift in baseball's landscape in fifty years.
