Roy Campanella Jr. I met director-producer Roy Campanella Jr. at Jerry's Deli on Beverly Boulevard on June 18, 2002. A film history buff, and the creator of the mini-studio Directors' Circle Filmworks, Campanella (son of baseball great Roy Campanella) seeks to emulate "the old studio operation. The buck stops here with one person. "I made a longterm lease of 12,000 square feet at the Lacy Street [Production Center] north of downtown LA. There's production space, art department, wardrobe... We have a small construction mill. Lacy was really not a studio but a series of warehouses where you could shoot. "I had a ten picture slate with BET (Black Entertainment Television cable channel). I decided that with that commitment I could create a studio in microcosm. We have the lowest cost studio you could imagine. The cost of our place per month doesn't run much more than a luxury apartment in Beverly Hills." Luke: "I had a girlfriend who paid $2500 a month for her Beverly Hills apartment." Roy: "That's about what I've got 12,000 square feet for."

Guest Editorial A Tribute to Roy Campanella
By Emily Monroy One of the more famous figures of American sports history is Roy Campanella. "Campy," as he was known, served as catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1948 to 1957. He also boasted a good batting average. But his spectacular career as a baseball player was cut short in 1958 when a car accident left him permanently paralyzed. However, Campanella later returned to the Dodgers who had since relocated to Los Angeles as a coach. A picture of him taken in 1980 shows him seated in a wheelchair instructing the team's rookie catchers. Roy Campanella died in 1993 at the age of seventy-one. During his lifetime Roy Campanella wore many hats: as a ballplayer, a liquor store owner, a coach, and a disabled person who succeeded despite the odds against him. My interest in Campanella, however, lies in another aspect of the man: his biracial heritage and specifically his Italian ancestry. While Campanella's mother was "black," his father, a fruit vendor in Philadelphia, hailed from Sicily, an island off the south of Italy. I remember when I saw a picture of Roy Campanella my first thought was "He looks so Italian!" He had tightly curled hair and dark skin, but his facial features were, in my opinion, very Italian. He would not have looked out of place in Palermo or Rome. Before I go on, I want to dispel any suspicion that I am trying to "steal" Roy Campanella from the "black" community the way some white supremacists have sought to explain Martin Luther King's genius by referring to his partial Caucasian ancestry (one such supremacist called King an "intelligent mulatto," implying that if the civil rights leader had been of unmixed African origin, he would not have been the brilliant man he was). Campanella was first and foremost

BLACK HISTORY
"Campy" was Major League Baseball's first black catcher
Compiled by Crystal Y. Lewis
Associate Editor
Roy Campanella was born Nov. 19, 1921 in Philadelphia, to a father of Italian descent and a black mother.
Campanella grew up playing baseball in his free time.
Free time was minimal, however. Like many children living through the Depression, he worked to help his family. At age 12, Roy delivered milk at three a.m. and had to make sure he was home by five so that he could help load up the family truck with the vegetables his father sold. When that chore was done, he cleaned up and hurried off to school. After school he sold newspapers or shined shoes, whatever he could do to earn extra money.
At 14, while playing ball with men in their twenties, he attracted the attention of a Negro League scout and after a two-game stint with the Bacharach Giants (a semi-pro team), he signed with the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro League. In 1936, it was as close to the Major Leagues as Campy could hope to come. Even so, he was a professional baseball player and he had not even celebrated his fifteenth birthday.
Because his baseball skills were so incredible he dropped out of High School his junior year, so he could play in the Negro Leagues. Roy always dreamed of playing in the big leagues, but there was a racial barrier in sports at the time, and he could not.

Historic Holman Stadium
Home of The Nashua Pride Renovation of Holman Stadium Almost minutes after Nashua entered the Atlantic League as a charter member in 1998, work began on Historic Holman Stadium to create a facility that meets the playing standards of today. The renovations were extensive, starting with the fan conveniences that Holman had never offered. Chair-backed seats, a custom-engineered Bose sound system, light poles taken out of the fans' view, and a non-obtrusive backstop were the first orders of business. Then came some creature comforts like a new picnic pavilion behind the left-field fence that puts the fans in the left-fielder's hip pocket. Bullpens now invite fans to see professional baseball pitchers up close. A concession facility was gutted and rebuilt to provide high quality food with minimized lines. For the quality of play, the playing surface was completely excavated after winter activities all but destroyed the field. Then, with mountains of displaced dirt in what would become the outfield, it was rebuilt from the sand up. The best Kentucky Bluegrass was rolled out to compliment the activities. The details even included the dirt's rich red- brown color, gray warning tracks and perfectly constructed mounds. Stadium lights were upgraded from the original 1948 fixtures to modern state-of -the- art fixtures that now bring the lighting at Holman to Class AAA facility standards. The outfield wall was designed to provide an exciting brand of baseball, with short porches and "Triple Alley" in right-center field. A scoreboard upgrade was also undertaken, complete with backlit ad panels.

Campy had a lot of little boy in him
By Nick Acocella
Special to ESPN.com
"The wheelchair didn't stop him. There's an old saying, 'A mind is a terrible thing to waste.' And his wasn't wasted. I don't think Roy really, really believed that he was in a wheelchair at the time. Because he was so exuberant," says former major leaguer Lou Johnson on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Roy Campanella became the last important piece of the Boys of Summer Brooklyn Dodgers when he went behind the plate in 1948. He also became the melancholy symbol of those teams in more than 30 years of public appearances in the wheelchair to which he was confined following a 1958 auto accident. Even Roy Campanella did not begin his career at such an age. Defensively, Campy is considered the standard not only for his era but also, with the arguable exception of Johnny Bench, for the history of the National League. Offensively, he hit 242 home runs in his 10 seasons; these include a record-setting 40 as a receiver in 1953. He had a lifetime average of .276 and knocked in 856 runs. Together with his handling of pitchers and clubhouse cheerleading role, his defensive and offensive talents netted him three Most Valuable Player awards in the fifties. In 1969, the man who said "You got to have a lot of little boy in you to play this game" became the second African-American player elected to the Hall of Fame. His former teammate, Jackie Robinson, was the first.

Roy Campanella
Roy Campanella could have been the first black player in baseball. Instead, he became Jackie Robinson's teammate on the Brooklyn Dodgers and a great catcher whose career was cut short by a car accident.
Roy Campanella showed up in the Brooklyn Dodgers' spring training camp in 1948 and pronounced the best catcher in all of baseball by Branch Rickey. Then Rickey sent Campanella (Campy) to Saint Paul's team in the American Association to break the color barrier in that league. Today, an ballplayer with Campanella's skill would be seeking free agency and making millions, not shrugging his shoulders over accepting an assignment in the Minor Leagues. But in 1948, Roy Campanella was an African American who toiled in the Negro Leagues, praying for someone to be brave enough to desegregate Major League Baseball. Born in 1921, Campy grew up in Philadelphia, spending his free time on the streets playing baseball and stickball. Free time was minimal, however. Like many children living through the Depression, he worked to help his family. At age twelve, Roy delivered milk at three a.m. and had to make sure he was home by five so that he could help load up the family truck with the vegetables his father sold. Analysis of Catchers Catching Thieves
    1958 to 2000
    (Minimum 40 Attempts per Season)
By David Smith, Member of the Society for American Baseball Research
and Creater and Chairman of Retrosheet
A few notes are in order and are included below.
    1. The analysis considered the 1958-2000 seasons plus Roy Campanella's career, since Retrosheet has play by play data for all of his games.
    2. Retrosheet does not have all games for all years. The record is complete from 1974-2000 for both leagues and 1963-2000 for the AL. At least 95% of all games were available for each season.
    3. Only catchers who allowed 40 attempts per season were considered (except that all Campanella seasons were included). There were 1569 catcher-seasons meeting these criteria.
    4. The top 10 catchers for 2000 are presented below in the first table. The team abbreviations should be self-explanatory. SB2 is the number of steals of second against this catcher, CS2 the number of runners he caught stealing; SB3 and CS3 are the corresponding numbers at third base. The first percentage (Pct) is the percentage of runners thrown out trying to steal second. The second percentage is the combination of action at second and third bases.
    5. The 10 worst performances for 2000 are in the second table. The point is not to embarrass anyone, but to show the range for a single season. It should be noted that Mike Piazza's problems in 2000 are not typical for him since his career average is 21.6%.
