zero trades at the trade deadline. Their team is exactly the same as it was through July, on a pace to go 62-100. They are not in playoff contention, and barring a 30 game winning streak, will not be any time soon. Instead, they: - Potentially ruined one of the biggest blockbuster trades in recent history, fiddling around with the prospects they were to receive from Boston and the Mets as they tried to deal Manny Ramirez. Tampa stood to receive top prospects from both Boston (Kelly Shoppach and Anibal Sanchez) and the Mets (Yusmeiro Petit and Lastings Milledge) in exchange for Huff and Baez, but reportedly tried to sweeten their deal by asking for top Boston prospect Hanley Ramirez, to which Boston, who already felt that they were not getting the value they should be receiving for Manny Ramirez AND two top prospects, took Tampa completely out of the equation and attempted to work out a deal with the Mets alone, before finally watching everything fall apart. Jay Buhner
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jay Campbell Buhner (born August 13 , in Louisville, Kentucky ), nicknamed "Bone", was a powerful right-handed hitter in Major League Baseball . He was among the most recognizable players of his day, noted for his shaved head and thick goatee. He put that recognizability to good cause, as well, hosting an annual Buhner Buzz Night, where fans would shave their heads at the ballpark with the proceeds going to charity.

Early career
Jay was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2nd round of the amateur draft and was traded shortly thereafter to the New York Yankees . He made his Major League debut on September 11 , appearing in seven games that year. Jay was traded again the next summer, on July 21 , to the Seattle Mariners along with two career minor leaguers (Rich Balabon and Troy Evers) in exchange for Ken Phelps . The trade is often considered one of the worst made by the Yankees of that period, and the best in Mariner history. (This fact was once noted humorously on the television program Seinfeld , in which the Yankees' owner, George Steinbrenner , appears at the home of George Costanza 's parents to inform them – mistakenly – that their son is dead. Notes:
  • Safeco hurts the above projections a bit. The Ichiro projection is a somewhat educated guess that the system spit out. It seems real high but this is someone who was hitting for consistent averages virtually unprecedented in Japan. Who knows, but I guess I'd count him as an above average corner outfielder from jump street until further results come in. Tom Lampkin is underrated and would be a good strong side platoon catcher. Like the Indians, the Mariners would be well advised to start coming up with hitting prospects. I think Chad Akers would make a decent utility player.

The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team):
  • Type C. Team losing player gets a supplemental pick after the second round.
If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.

Baseball players have to eat too
So I trucked down to Su Casa for dinner tonight, as I often do when I'm flying solo for meals.  Lately that's been 3-5 times per week.  I just can't get enough of this place.  Just when I start getting bored with one thing, they bust out something completely new and mind-blowing, and I'm re-hooked.  When I get tired of carne guisada gordos, I switch to chicken ones with rice and jalapenos.  I think I may need an intervention soon. Anyway, I walked in and who did I see but former Mariner great

Former Seattle Mariners outfielder Jay Buhner squats to appear shorter while Washington state Sen. Mike Hewitt, R-Walla Walla, stretches to appear taller as the two had their picture taken Friday at the Capitol. Buhner and Mariners Chief Executive Officer Howard Lincoln attended the morning's session of the state Senate, where the Mariners were honored for their record winning season last year. Senate praises M's values, wins Mariners' visit invokes spirit of teamwork, pride BRAD SHANNON, THE OLYMPIAN Originally published Saturday, January 26, 2002 OLYMPIA Fan favorite Jay Buhner and Seattle Mariners boss Howard Lincoln were given a hero's welcome by the state Senate Friday. The irony didn't escape lawmakers: The Legislature, known for bickering and few accomplishments in recent years, was honoring a baseball organization that used a team-oriented style of play last year to tie a modern baseball record for wins. "The Legislature needs to have a season like the Mariners had last year, no doubt," commented Sen. Eric Poulsen, D-West Seattle, before the ceremonies began.

In 1995, Jay Buhner played an important role in the Seattle Mariners winning their first-ever division title. The outfielder from Louisville, Kentucky, hit 40 home runs and drove in 121 runs for the M's that year and finished fifth in voting for the American League MVP. Accordingly, big things were expected of him the following season and Buhner found himself in the spotlight almost as much as superstar teammate Ken Griffey Jr. As major league teams were in the midst of spring training in Florida and Arizona, Sports Illustrated released its March 18, 1996, issue with Buhner and his son Chase gracing the cover. The photograph was perfect: Buhner would take the bite out of opposing pitching in 1996, recording career-highs in home runs (44) and RBIs (138). Now available is this 8" x 10" image of a highly memorable SI cover photographed by V.J. Lovero and autographed by Buhner! The item is authenticated by UDA.
