    George Brett
George Howard Brett (born May 15 ) is a former American baseball player. He is one of the greatest third basemen in Major League Baseball history and the only man to ever win batting titles in three different decades. Brett, the youngest child of a sports-minded family which included his older brother Ken Brett , a major-league pitcher, was born on May 15 in Glen Dale, West Virginia . His family moved to the midwest and later to southern California when he was a boy, and Brett grew up hoping to follow in his brother's footsteps as a big-league baseball player. He was drafted by the fledgling Kansas City Royals in the second round of the baseball draft. Brett began his professional career as a shortstop , but had trouble going to his right defensively and was soon shifted to third base. As a third baseman, his powerful arm remained an asset, and he remained at that spot for 15 years. The Royals promoted him to the major leagues on August 2 He won the starting third-base job a year later, but struggled with the bat until he asked for help from Charlie Lau, the Royals' hitting instructor. Spending the 1974 All-Star break working together, Lau taught Brett how to protect the entire plate and cover up some holes in his swing that experienced big-league pitchers were taking advantage of. Armed with this knowledge, Brett developed rapidly as a hitter.

Henderson Two Of A Kind: Brett And Boggs Played All-Out, All The Time JOE HENDERSON
Published: Jul 30, 2005 COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - C OOPERSTOWN, N.Y. George Brett had long since been among the best hitters in baseball for the Kansas City Royals when he began to notice things about this rookie from Boston. The season was 1982, just two years after Brett spent the summer trying to become the first .400 hitter since Ted Williams. He just missed, settling for .390. Anyway, Brett takes up the story here, Friday afternoon on fabled Doubleday Field, down the street from the building that houses the National Baseball Hall of Fame. "If you looked at the list of the top 10 batting order, I was up there a lot," Brett said. "But all of a sudden there's this new third baseman from the Red Sox named Wade Boggs. It's like, who is this guy? He's hitting .360, .370 in April." The new kid showed he had some staying power, but he also showed some respect. The first time their teams met, he made it a point to watch Brett in batting practice. The two became great friends, sharing time together when their teams would play. Boggs even named his son Brett, and asked George to be the boy's godfather.

chapter services news get involved contact the chapter ... News George Brett and the Keith Worthington Chapter
Hall of Famer George Brett has been working to raise awareness and funds for ALS since his rookie year in 1973 - more time than he spent on the baseball field. "I retired from the baseball field in 1993," says Brett. "But I won't retire from the fight against ALS until a cure is found. I made a promise to a friend, and I intend to keep it."
    Involvement with the Chapter
That friend was Keith Worthington , the Vice President of Woolf Brothers Clothiers, who, in 1973, convinced the promising rookie to act as a spokesman for the clothing stores. Throughout the years, George's friendship with Keith, who had been diagnosed with ALS in 1973, led to his growing involvement with the Chapter.
    Impact of the Promise
Brett's impact on the Chapter is considerable. His commitment gives hope to patients, spurs on volunteers and staff, and motivates donors. His golf tournaments and the auction chaired by his wife Leslie alone have raised millions. His 1992 drive to 3,000 hits and his 1993 retirement raised another $300,000 for the Chapter, and the celebrations surrounding his 1999 induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame raised another $3 million.

E wing Kauffman bought the expansion Kansas City Royals in 1968 and brought the team into the American League’s smallest market. It became one of the most successful franchises in baseball. The Royals have won six division championships, two American League pennants, and one World Series and have drawn more than 2 million fans 11 times in this ballpark. After being known as Royals Stadium for 21 years, the park was renamed Kauffman Stadium on July 2, 1993. A month later the only owner the team had ever had died at the age of 76. P art of a sports complex that includes Arrowhead Stadium (home of the NFL Chiefs), Kauffman Stadium is one of the most fan-friendly arenas in professional sports. Beyond the fence in right field is a 322-foot-wide fountain, the largest privately funded waterworks in the world, that features lighted cascades between innings. Beyond the fence in left field is a 30-by-40 foot Sony JumboTron video display board that was the largest in the United States when installed in 1990. Of the stadium’s 40,625 seats, over half (20,316) are on the lower level of the three-tiered park. In 1995 the Royals replaced their Astroturf field with natural grass. During 1999 and 2000 the team replaced all of the old red seats with dark blue seats. They also added dugout suites, the Crown Club and the Royal Pavilion.

IT WAS OBVIOUS FROM HIS question, the Philadelphia doctor had no idea who George Brett was or the daily ordeal he had just endured for the final six weeks of the 1980 season.
Brett had hit .390, captivating baseball fans in his attempt to be the first player since Ted Williams in 1941 to hit .400. The World Series was going to start the following day with Brett's Kansas City Royals playing the Phillies in Veterans Stadium. And now Brett was in the office of a doctor he had never met, along with Royals trainer Mickey Cobb, listening as the doctor confirmed what they already knew.
      Brett had hemorrhoids.

IT MIGHT BE THE MOST famous piece of wood in Royals history. But it's what was on it, and the commotion that resulted, that led to its resting place at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
It is the bat used in the infamous pine-tar incident.
In case you were too young to remember, it was July 24, 1983 when the Royals' George Brett hit a two-run homer and then watched in disbelief when umpire Tim McClelland measured Brett's bat for excessive pine tar (18 inches beyond the handle). McClelland subsequently erased the homer and ruled Brett out.
The rest of the visual story still captures observers watching the incident for the first time on videoa disbelieving and completely wigged-out Brett charging from the dugout, presumably in an attempt to completely dismember McClelland, and umpires and players alike trying desperately to
